Hello all, I know it’s been a while since I’ve updated but I have much to share with you. First, this blog dedicated to my time at Helike (or Nikolaiika) and another two devoted to my trips to Olympia and the Argolid, respectively. As some of you know, I’ve spent the last three weeks participating in a dig in and around the village of Nikolaiika on the shore of the Northern Peloponnese, about an hour from Patra. On the whole it was an incredible experience, largely because of the people I met there. The first two weeks, there were 11 of [View Full Entry]

Mitrou and Athens

 Europe » Greece » Attica » Athens
So the day I was about to leave Thebes, I finally got in touch with Dr. Aleydis Vander Moortel. She is the director of the excavation at Mitrou, an island near the small beachfront village of Tragana in northern Boeotia. The site has been producing an enormous amount of pottery and other remains from the Bronze and Geometric ages, as well as finding numerous buildings, cysts graves etc. At this point none of the chronology is absolutely fixed, but the excavation is still only in it’s late Bronze age levels in most areas. Getting to the island was an experience [View Full Entry]

Thiva to Delphi[url='/Videos/4282.html' onclick='dialog("/Videos/4282.html?popped=1","tbvideo",600,600);return false;'] Delphi For economy’s sake, and just because it makes more sense, I’ve combined my experiences from four days here, starting the day after my first trip to Orchomenos. The next morning (the 6th) I got up early in the morning and went over and over the information I had on the palace of Orchomenos. There is in fact evidence of a palace near the grounds of the present Byzantine church and monastery of Panagea Skripou. But where? The accounts I had were conflicting and none of them very specific. Nonetheless, armed with this knowledge, I [View Full Entry]

Orchomenos

Europe » Greece » Central Greece » Orchomenos
Thebes to Orchomenos 7-05 Been having trouble getting wireless access last few days. Anyway here's my report on Orchomenos. Today (7-5) I set out for Orchomenos to see what I could find there. The town didn’t disappoint. I took the bus first to Livadia, which was an experience in and of itself, and then to Orchomenos. I didn’t have to go far from the bus stop before I happened upon the remains of the 4th century B.C. theater, and immediately behind it, the tomb of the legendary King Minyas. I was, of course, especially taken with the tomb and with [View Full Entry]

Gia sas everyone! Found out today that the museum in Thebes is closed for renovation, which of course was not mentioned on the website when I looked before I came. That’s a major bummer because I was depending on my visit there to get an idea of the artifacts which are common to Viotia and Chania. I’m hoping I can find a catalog for the museum at least in a local bookshop. So, rather than going to the museum, I went to Gla. For those of you who don't know, Gla was a Mycenaean fortress located in the middle of [View Full Entry]

Athens to Thebes THIVA, 1:27am local time- I arrived in Athens last night and met Pro’s sister Denise. She’s really a lovely girl, and so sweet and helpful. I brought her a t-shirt that says “New York” on it, just as a token. I know a t-shirt sounds incredibly lame, but what do you get for someone you’ve never met before whose home you’re going to be staying in? Hopefully something a little more original will present itself before the end of my stay. We walked around in Athens last night. Her neighborhood is far from the center of town [View Full Entry]
