For the geography challenge (which would include my parents) prague is the farthest east we will go on our backpacking trip. Laura's backpacking on a shoestring book told us that the Czech train conductors will often try to intimidate tourist on the train by threatening there to be a problem with the passengers ticket. So we were a bit nervous when we crossed the border and this tall man sternly asked us for our passports. The train ended up being uneventful as we spent most of our time talking to an American couple who were there for a wedding in Cesky Krumlov. This turned out to be a good train cart to sit in because the womens motherly instincts kicked in and she fed our "starving" backpacking bellys trail mix. That afternoon we arrived at our ... read more

Friday 3rd August Day Eighteen, It was a grey start to the day so we decided to move on to Venice. After a short drive complete with spells of rain and a camera crew asking us about our journey we arrived at our peaceful site in Oriago, just outside of Venice. By the time we had pitched up and enjoyed a late lunch it was 3:30. We realised it would be perfect timing to go straight into Venice- cool but sunny and we'd see day, evening and night! We took the bus from outside the site to the central station where we got a waterbus up the Grand Canal. Our first stop took us past the Venice Casino to the Jewish Ghettos. Here people were speaking Hebrew, the houses had many floors with low ceilings from ... read more

Santorini Friday 3rd - Friday 10th August Nat, Shel, Sarah and I met up with Nat´s friend Yael. The 5 of us stayed at Anny Studios at Perissa Beach for a week and spent our time sunbaking, eating and making a dubious decision to hire a car.. We did do some sightseeing though! We went around the island for a day and watched the sunset at Oia. We had a great time and it was sad to say goodbye to Yael as she headed back to Israel.... read more

Today’s coach ride was comparatively a short one! We picked up Thierry (and dropped off Charlie) at the campsite, then headed to Florence. We took maybe ten steps out of the coach before the rain started! I’m not talking sprinkles, I’m talking an absolute downpour! The best part is that Paul had just said the rain will hold off! Ha ha, um, NO! Of course, as soon as the rain began, there were little guys running around trying to sell us umbrellas for 5 Euro. I was already soaked, so I didn’t buy one. It was funny, those of us who didn’t get one looked like drowned rats at the leather demonstration. The leather demonstration was pretty boring. Once we were done learning about how we could tell fake from real leather, we were let loose ... read more

Friday, August 3rd- Inverness to Thurso: Well, at this point in the journal I stopped writing specifics and did summaries: Head to Thurso and stop at a big ass mansion along the way and watch a Falcon show. Rain. Arrive in Thurso- pouring rain and mom and I walk in it. Dinner sucked. Bubble bath for Burt. So, now I will attempt to go thru and remember what happened (two weeks later) The big ass mansion (I can turn a phrase, can’t I?) that I referred to above is Dunrobin Castle in Sutherland (East coast of Northern Scotland, about 90 minutes North of Inverness). Parts of the castle date back to 1275. Unfortunately it was raining quite a bit when we went to tour this one and that dampened everyone’s spirits and desire to explore. I ... read more

8/03/07 The Anne Frank house is in Amsterdam. It is the part of my journey I have been waiting for and dreading the most. Today was the second time I have climbed the stairs to the secret annex, but the experience this time around was quite different. Anne Frank was one of the first biographies I read; the first time a book brought tears to my eyes; the singlemost book that immediately connects me with the person who introduced it to me over twenty years ago---my mom. This email is much different than its predecessors. It is the first I am writing intentionally outside of my own audience. It is the first I am typing fresh without copying from my written records, and it is the first where I want to tell more about my connection ... read more

Well, after a good eight months in Latin America it was nice to be back on some what familiar ground. So for a few days we would check out the streets of London as well as catch up with my Aunt and Uncle who I haven't seen in a long time and it was great to introduce my new Wife who they seemed to warm to very quickly but maybe I'm getting ahead of myself. We arrived after a few hours flight from Madrid and touched down in London and unfortunately my Uncle was unable to put me up for that night so made our way to a Hotel somewhere in the centre of the city. After dropping of our bags and got accustomed to the best hotel room in a few years we nipped out ... read more
