Asil - Lisa Bontomase

Lisa Bontomase Welcome to my travelblog. I am 23 and I am planning my first backpacking vacation with my best friend Laura overseas. Laura and I were both bitten by the travel bug back in 11th grade when we took a 10 day tour of Mexico through our high school Spanish club. Since then we have both study abroad in Australia, and have traveled to New Zealand and the Bahamas. This time around we are broadening our horizons with a 2 month backpacking trip through Europe. We are spending most of our time in Western Europe with a quick stop over in Morrocco. So join us May 15th in London on our backpacking trip of a lifetime.

Paris

 Europe » France » Île-de-France » Paris
So some final thoughts on my trip as a whole: A question many people ask is what is my favorite country? Well seems how I was only in some countries for 3 days I have to choose my favorite places based on city/town then by country. Some of the standouts being Top 3 Lagos, Portugal Merzouga Sand Dunes, Morocco Brugge, Belgium Honarable Mention List (Harder to pick then the top 3 list) Cinque Terre, Italy Edinburgh, Scotland Gryon, Switzerland If it isn't already obvious by my list I must say I enjoy the town/small cities then the huge 1 million + [View Full Entry]

Brugge

Europe » Belgium » West Flanders » Brugge
Our guidebook called Brugges overcrowded and a tad fake but with charm. Although Brugge was undeniably crowded when we were there I still found it to be one of my favorite places on our whole trip. Brugge has a lot to offer. It has a lot of history, museums and tours, tons of shopping, resturants, bars, bike trips to the country side (we were going to do this but got rained out) and festivals. During our 3 day stay we did a brewery tour, went to a chocolate museum, took a horse and carriage ride, window shopped and at night enjoyed [View Full Entry]

Amsterdam

Europe » Netherlands » North Holland » Amsterdam
For our one full day in Amsterdam we went to the sex museum (the marquis de sade could give you nightmares), sex shops (didn't buy anything), visited some cat shelter thing, went to one of the coffee houses (we smoked shisha which is tobacco not pot Mom) and walked around the red light district. This blog could head into rated R territory and younger relatives of mine sometimes read them and plus my lack of good writing skills is making me fustrated so I'm just going to end now. Next up Brugge [View Full Entry]

Berlin

Europe » Germany » District of Berlin » Berlin
So Berlin it is. We had planned on going to either Munich, Dresden or Hiedleberg(sp) but lack of hostel availability became a problem (Sound like a popular theme with us) so we went to Berlin. I didn't know what to expect from Berlin but out of all the large cities (Million + pop) we visited Berlin was probably the one I would have liked to have spent a little bit more time in. At this point of the trip the lack of money is really starting to get fustrating because it keeps us from some of the interesting museums we had [View Full Entry]

Prague

Europe » Czech Republic » North » Prague
For the geography challenge (which would include my parents) prague is the farthest east we will go on our backpacking trip. Laura's backpacking on a shoestring book told us that the Czech train conductors will often try to intimidate tourist on the train by threatening there to be a problem with the passengers ticket. So we were a bit nervous when we crossed the border and this tall man sternly asked us for our passports. The train ended up being uneventful as we spent most of our time talking to an American couple who were there for a wedding in Cesky [View Full Entry]

I think if there is one country on our whole trip that I wish we had spent more time in it would probably be Austria. We had no hostel booked heading into Austria so we basically could get off at any stop but it was late and we decided our best bet at finding a place was Salzburg. Salzburg has gained much of it's popularity as being the setting for the Sound of Music. I haven't seen Sound of Music as a good so unfortunately I didn't recognize any of the setting but Salzburg is beautiful on it's own. Our [View Full Entry]

Venice - On the top of Global Warmings Sh*t list Europe » Italy » Venice By Asil July 16th 2007 Lisa Bontomase From what I had heard people seem to either love Venice or hate it. Laura and I were part of the love it crew. For the most part Laura and I mostly did a lot of window shopping and ate gelato by the water. A must in Venice is to buy pigeon feed from a vender in San Marco squ [View Full Entry]

5 towns

Europe » Italy » Liguria » Cinque Terre
Boy was finding our hostel in Cinque Terre (Which wasnt even in Cinque Terre) a bitch. Cinque Terre translates into 5 towns. The towns starting from the north are Monterrosso, Vernazzo, Corniglia, Manorola and Riomiggiore. The website where we booked our hostel from made it seem like our hostel was in the town of Monterrosso. When entering Monterrosso we passed by and information center and asked where our hostel was. The women not speaking any english pulls out a Monterrosso map and circles a spot at the top of the town. So Laura and I throw our 40 pound backpacks on [View Full Entry]

Grosseto Laura and I have been making a bad habit of booking our hostels a bit to late landing us in unknown Grosseto. We decided to stay in another campground again but the campground was way outside the city and it wasn't cheap to get back into the city so we mostly just hungout at the campgrounds and the nearest beach. There really isn't to much to say about Grosseto other then I got some awesome sunset shots with my camera. Pisa Our train to Florence passed through Pisa so we decided to get off the train, drag our 40 pound [View Full Entry]

Rome heatwave

 Europe » Italy » Lazio » Rome
For our Rome accomodations we decided to give the campgrounds a shot. It saved us about 15 euros a night and we had a POOL!!!! And thank god for that pool because Rome was HOT!!!! Our first full day in Rome we decided to go to the Vatican. The last Sunday of every month admission to the Vatican is free so we got up nice in early and hopped into the notorious long line. Our wait was under 2 hours which is actually pretty short compared to other people we had talked to's wait. The Sisteen Chapel was the best part [View Full Entry]
