Guten Tag! from Vienna, I have just spent my second full day here and thought I would just send a little update to let you know that I have arrived and that things are going fine. I am quickly realizing how it might have been a good idea to have learned some German but I am getting by. The people at the hostel seem nice, but as most of them are travelling with others i have not really met any one. The guys who I met tonight who are in my mixed room are from Canada--Brampton and they are 3 brothers travelling together named James, Jerem. When I first arrived here in Vienna after a long flight to Frankfurt and a short flight to Vienna one of the first thigns I did was have some schnitzel--the ... read more

Antwerp on Wednesday was great (minus our group of 15 getting on the wrong train, which postponed things about an hour). Anyway, if that was the worst of it (which it was), we did great. Our site visit on Wednesday was Ecover---everyone should use their products!!!! Their mission is to produce household cleaning products that are environmentally friendly, from the raw materials through production, use, and discard/recycling. We were given a tour of their production plant (see pictures!), and even went into the lab where they test products!!! Chem peeps, they use an HPLC to determine if the 100% 'green' raw materials sent to them are indeed that (and not synthetic), which was very exciting to know what he was talking about. They gave us free samples of some of their products...you can find Ecover products ... read more

I'm collecting Canadians! In Munich for that matter! Saturday - after a quiet day to myself I met Jessi at the train station. She's been staying with her host family in Venice for the last little while. I know it sounds like a dream vacation, but alas things are far more complicated than that. It was wonderful to be able to meet someone at the train station - kind of like sharing your adventure with them. The same applies to airports I guess, it might very well be the best place in the world to people watch. That would make the train station the second best for sure. We headed to Kate's for some wine and catching up. It had begun to rain that afternoon, which was sad because the weather was so beautiful for the ... read more

On Wednesday Kristine and I walked into town. It was a beautiful walk and the weather was really nice. We grabbed dinner at one of her favorite Italian places. Traditional food is hard to find. We walked by Bryggen a part of the town that contains a few of Bergen's oldest houses. Kristine treated me to a cider beer at an outside bar near Bryggen. While we looked out over the water and drank our beers, Kristine taught me a bit of Norwegian. I can now count to 10 and ask what time it is. I even learned a few sentences including: I want to go up the mountain, but not tonight, and I climbed a mountain. Random I know, but I have been doing a great deal of hiking. I'm planning to learn as much ... read more

Koprivstitsa Avi had mentioned to Evan that I wanted to see the places around Sofia and he suggested that I visit Koprivstitsa. He also offered that he will come at 7:00 AM to our hotel and take me to the central bus station to put me on the bus to Koprivstista. He would also arrange for a lady to escort me about the place. I too wanted to visit Koprivstitsa since I had read about it being a ‘town-museum’ and it’s Rose Festival. Evan was waiting for us when we finished our breakfast at 7:00 AM. I was surprised because according to the guidebook, Bulgarians are not very punctual, but Evan was very punctual as well as the lady escort he had provided, who actually turned out to be his own cousin. So, you cannot believe ... read more

Bulgaria Trip Plovdiv and Bachkovo Monastery I wanted to visit Rila Monastery but Evan told us that as the President of the country was visiting the monastery on the same day, foreigners would not be allowed to visit due to security reasons. I was not exactly heart-broken. After all, when I visited Plovdiv, I would also be visiting the second largest monastery, the Bachkovo Monastery. However, my plans appeared to be jinxed because the car had been booked by another lady from the Sheraton hotel. “You can go on the tour if you are willing to share the car with another lady”. The tour-desk-manager of Sheraton said. I was more than willing. It would be nice to have the company of another lady on the long drive. Accordingly, I was waiting in our hotel lobby when ... read more
