Ah Venice - place full of bridges, little islands, glass and hot gondola drivers (well our one was hot anyway).... We started the day in Venice with all our wet weather gear as it had been raining in Italy quite a lot. However the sun decided to come out and it was a glorious day spent in Venice. I'd have to say that i think it is my favourite place (apart from Cinque Terre). Hopping from island to island and attempting not to get too lost was the aim of the day. We did a bit of a walking tour around St Marks square but due to high tide, it decided to flood the square (see pic) so it was more trying to avoid getting drench early in the day. Most of us on the tour ... read more

After several more hours on the expensive toll roads we start to climb up into the hills behind San Remo on the Italian side of the French boarder along a very narrow, very windy road…scary. Our little apartment is typical of the others, a little maze of rooms with rounded ceilings and white washed walls. I had to do a little housekeeping at first. I think when Nonna fell off the perch the relatives just decided to rent it ou; the drawers are full of Nonna’s best linen and some old clothes as well. The plastic Madonna’s are safely packed away, off came the plastic tablecloth, out went bags of plastic bags and old cardboard and the place is now nice and cozy. ... read more

Recomendations for anyone travelling long distances. Back to back 11 hour flights are not a good idea. Also if you are stopping in Hong Kong then try to get there after ten in the morning. That way you are less likely to be stuck in a transit lounge for hours looking at the shops through a security window. That said having a Friday that lasted 36 hours ment when we did get to Hamburg we slept like logs, despite the fact our hostel was on the loudest street with the most emergency vehicals in all of Hamburg. Get lag was minimal. I still consider our stay in Hamburg part of the travelling to the start of our trip. We slept for about 6 hours, then tired though we were it was dinner time in NZ and ... read more

Europe » Denmark » Region Hovedstaden » Copenhagen May 22nd 2008

This was out last day together, and we spent the morning driving back to Copenhagen. We dropped off my large bag at DIS so I could walk there the next day with my traveling bag, we checked into the CABINN, and returned the car. We got on some of the free city bikes to explore what was left of the city. Mom wanted to see Hotel D'Angleterre by Kongens Nytorv, and she said it was very elegant although I stayed outside to enjoy the weather. We made our way to Christiania, which I would love to read more about. From my understanding, it is its own state as of the 60's that Denmark allowed as a social experiment. They have their own judicial and educational system, and the buildings are all covered with bright paint and ... read more

May 20, 21, 2008 RAGUSA, Sicily / MALTA Today was a short drive from Taormina to Ragusa in the very south of Sicily. This is another very nice drive through some beautiful scenery through the mountains valleys and lots and lots of seascapes from the high freeway. This is an interesting grain farming area with vineyards and fruit growing areas. In Ragusa there is not a lot to do but we took a walk to visit a local botanical garden and of course another large “Duomo” church. Wednesday morning we got an early start to catch the ferry to Malta from Pozzallo. This was a very comfortable 90 min. ferry trip on a new, fast, catamaran. B.C. Ferries could learn a lot from these guys. Malta is pretty small so we organized a day excursion through ... read more

22 May 2008 A magnificent day’s walking along the Cinque Terre (Five Lands), probably one of the most well known and scenic coastal routes in Europe. It connects five villages which are difficult to get to by road but all have a rail link. For the entire length mountains which are terraced for growing vines, drop steeply into the sea and the path cuts across the slopes and drops down into each village. It’s12k long although it seemed more than that due to the amount of ascent and descent involved. Unfortunately, I lost my camera at the bar we had our lunchtime stop. However this was no great disaster as I had planned to replace it when we got home, the only pictures on it were those taken that morning and I had my phone with ... read more

Europe » Austria » Vienna » Vienna May 22nd 2008

Today is my last night in Vienna and I am sad that I am leaving. I have had such a great time here. I have met so many people and have had such a great time. I met a girl last night that went to high school with lots of people that I hung out with in college. Today I just walked around. I went to the Belvedere Museum and saw Klimt's The Kiss. It was breath-taking. I saw a couple that I had met in the hostel the night before and ended up walking around with them the rest of the day. Vienna is great and I wish that more people would have told me because I could have spent more days here. I have booked all of my hostels and don't want to loose ... read more

This is part two of our blog - we did the travel, now the house! The house is underway - the drains foundations and foundations were completed by the end of April. The frame arrived in lots and lots of pieces and was assembled on site. This week - I think - a crane arrived to put the bits of the frame together including the roof panels. Tomorrow, the sarking goes on - for the benefit of our foreign readers (including the English) - sarking is boards that sit on the rafters, under the breathable membrane and the slates. Have a look at the photos.... ... read more

We've been here for just over a week, but it feels like much more than that. Our job hunt has begun in earnest - Mon is rocking the web with her business acumen while I stare blankly at a computer. I find searching fo jobs on the web singularly dispiriting due to the lack of interaction - it's you vs the screen. If I see the words 'implement' and 'deliver' in the same sentence again I may give it all up and become a nun... No pressure, though - we are happily ensconced in the Eton Manor, the jet lag has worn off and we are enjoying the weather here (I kid you not!). Our jobhunting is punctuated by walks along the Thames or in Windso Great Park; the latter a public piece of Crown land ... read more
