EGleckel - Erikka Gleckel

Erikka Gleckel I am a part-time graduate student at George Washington University earning my master's degree in organizational management. I also work full-time at GW in the Chemistry Department. A course I am taking this summer, Global Corporate Responsibility, is taking me to Brussels, Belgium for 8 days! I have ridden the Maid of the Mist more times than I care to count, seen the wonders of Tulum, partied in Cancun, snorkeled off the shore of Mazatlan. Studying abroad in Italy was gluttonous--Carnevale in Venice, skiing The Alps, hiking Cinque Terre, touring the vineyards of Tuscany while being immersed in the romantic language and culture was surreal. I have been a tourist on the double-decker bus in London. I have waded in the waters of The Aegean Sea--Rhodos, Greece is a slice of heaven. Israel challenged me to climbing Masada before day break to see the sunrise, experiencing the extreme saltiness of the Dead Sea as I effortlessly floated on her waters, trekking through the desert on camelback, repelling down her magnificent cliffs, enduring a night in the Negev, and embracing my heritage. The simple things in life have the greatest impact on me. In addition to traveling, I enjoy the beach, reading, cooking, sushi, volunteering---pretty much anything that involves learning while surrounded by my friends and family.

Since I've left and returned, something in me has changed, but I can't quite determine what. There's this fire in me to make my mark on the world and experience all that life has to offer. And now more than ever do I realize that the good comes with the bad...the sweet isn't so sweet without the sour. As I was experiencing Brussels and expanding my educational horizon, my 94-year-old grandfather passed away in his sleep on Monday evening. I'm still fighting (mostly with myself) the frustration I feel since my family didn't tell me until yesterday evening once I was [View Full Entry]

Today is nothing but site-seeing and going wherever our feet take us. Brugge has been recommended to me by many, so Natalie and I (and possibly meeting a couple others there) are taking the train there for the day. I miss everyone from back home (I haven't had a phone to my ear in a week!!!), but the way of life is just so different here. In the US everything is bigger, better, faster...more more more. The majority of us easily get caught up in the American way and don't even realize that everything is much more enjoyable at a slower [View Full Entry]

Antwerp on Wednesday was great (minus our group of 15 getting on the wrong train, which postponed things about an hour). Anyway, if that was the worst of it (which it was), we did great. Our site visit on Wednesday was Ecover---everyone should use their products!!!! Their mission is to produce household cleaning products that are environmentally friendly, from the raw materials through production, use, and discard/recycling. We were given a tour of their production plant (see pictures!), and even went into the lab where they test products!!! Chem peeps, they use an HPLC to determine if the 100 [View Full Entry]

Yesterday was our first official day--lectures in the morning, site visits in the afternoon, "cultural" dining (aka authentic Belgium food and beer) in the evening, which lasted through the night. The morning began with a healthy walk to the UK Research Office where our lecture is held. Our professor, Nigel Roome, holds several positions, but his most prestigious is the Daniel Janssen Chair in Corporate Social Responsibility at Solvay Business School, Free University of Brussels, Belgium. His lectures are engaging and he is very enthusiastic about the subject. Corporate Social Responsibility ( [View Full Entry]

A great corner we passed on our walk back to the hotel
tram

HAPPY BIRTHDAY DAD!!!! After boarding my plane in Philly, the cabin door closed and the announcements were given in both English and French. I couldn't help but grin and recognize that my time abroad is finally here!!! I arrived safe and sound at 9:55am local time in Brussels, Belgium. I met my roommate/group member, Natalie, at the airport (she arrived from Copenhagen around the same time) and we ventured to our hotel. It took a train, metro, tram, 45 minutes and Natalie's wonderful navigation skills to get us to our destination. The jet lag has seriously taken it's toll on me, [View Full Entry]
