So I was REALLY excited to go things in my class this week after an awesome weekend at the conference last weekend. Things didn't quite go as planned. My new seating plan DID work though. Students aren't out of their seats as much, as they can all see eachother in the horseshoe, and I can see them all. My students, however, feel that they can be disrespectful to everyone. Here are some things that they did this week to contribute to my frustration: - talking while I am talking - talking while their classmates are talking - talking while they should be doing work - fooling around in class - not handing in homework - not following directions - not reading instructions - pushing each other - taking things out of my cupboard that has MY ... read more

Central America Caribbean » Costa Rica » Limón » Cahuita November 23rd 2006

Happy Thanksgiving!!! We have made it safely to Cahuita and this place is different than the rest of costa rica so far. It has strong rasta influence and smells of jamaica. The town is small and almost all the locals are dreaded rastafarian. The Main street turns directly into a trail leading through a national park along the ocean. There are both white and black sand beaches boarded by the jungle. Our first night here we had an amazing caribbean coconut milk seafood dish that was the best food we have had since the trip began, amazing. Last night we went out to the local bar and listened to live reggae, pretty cool. Today we hike 6km one way, to an isolated white sand beach. When we got there we encountered our first wouldbe theft. So on we went to the laid-back vibe that constitutes the town of Puerto Viejo, part of the slightly notorious Limon province (after the rafting, the tour company - and this is part of the $80 deal - take you on to your chosen next destination). We pass some pretty basic homes and buildings on the way: img=http://i126.photobucket.com/albums/p112/julespenk/Jules%20and%20Sofie%20in%20the%20Americas/2%20-%20Costa%20Rica/3%20-%20Rio%20Pacuare/IMG_7692.jpg img=http://i126.photobucket.com/albums/p112/julespenk/Jules%20and%20Sofie%20in%20the%20Americas/2%20-%20Costa%20Rica/3%20-%20Rio%20Pacuare/IMG_7693.jpg img=http://i126.photobucket.com/albums/p112/julespenk/Jules%20and%20Sofie%20in%20the%20Americas/2%20-%20Costa%20Rica/3%20-%20Rio%20Pacuare/IMG_7694.jpg Enjoying a beer. img=http://i126.photobucket.com/albums/p112/julespenk/Jules%20and%20Sofie%20in%20the%20Americas/2%20... read more

Central America Caribbean » Costa Rica » San José November 23rd 2006

The rainy season had finally caught up with us and we decided to forgo a visit to the carribean where they were having even more rain than the rest of the country and instead went to San Jose for a bit of city life whilst we waited for our flight to Ecuador. We arrived and went to Hostal Pangea one of the hostals recommended by the guide book but only stopped for the one night as there was no atmosphere and the rooms were quite prison-like! We moved the following day to Tranqillo´s backpackers hostal round the corner where there were lots of cool friendly people and pancakes for breakfast every morning! We went out for a few drinks on our second night, without any recommendations for bars we just went for a wander to see ... read more

Central America Caribbean » Costa Rica » San José » Pavas November 23rd 2006

Callista and I had our six month check-ups yesterday at our dentist’s office in Pavas. We were thrilled to get great news, no cavities. We’re in the clear for awhile. Bill had his first exam, he wasn’t so lucky. We’ll be going into the city once a week for the next month or so. Callista and I don’t mind at all as we’ll be able to spend time window shopping and enjoying the holiday season in the city knowing we aren’t the ones getting drilled this time. We’ll see if Bill likes all the teasing when it’s HIS turn in the chair. While dentist Claudia worked on Callista we discussed her two teeth that are getting loose and joked about the tooth fairy finding us in Costa Rica. Much to our surprise we learned there isn’t ... read more

Central America Caribbean » Sint Maarten November 22nd 2006

I flew down to St. Maarten via Toronto the week of Nov. 11-18 for a much-appreciated vacation. Two reasons for going: to attend Sonya and Kevin's wedding and to spend some time with Sarah. Sarah is living in St. Maarten teaching at an international school on the Dutch side so acted as host and tour guide for the group that flew in, which included Sonya and Kevin, Wendy, John, Kevin and myself. It was my first time in the Caribbean and I think it was much better than staying at an all-inclusive resort because I got to experience more of the island. Equipped with my new waterproof Pentax (which should outlast my previous 3 cameras which met their end on beaches) I got lots of pics including beach and underwater shots. By the way, on a ... read more

After a long, hot and sweaty journey from Costa Rica we made it across the border and into the port town of San Jorge in Nicaragua where we caught the ferry to Isla de Ometepe. The island looks the most impressive from the mainland as it is made up of two volcanoes joined in the middle with a small strip of land in between, pretty stunning. After a good nights sleep we ventured off for a day of exploring the island on a local's moped that he graciously hired to us for the day (Nick wanted to go for the more poweful dirt track bike but I had my reservations after seeing how the locals drive). Our first stop was to a beach and a nearby lagoon whereupon we discovered we had a puncture in our ... read more
