Sally and Nick Griffith

Sally and Nick Griffith

Just a few trips here and there to maintain our sanity from now on - but you never know - we might take off again for an extended break!

Europe » Spain » Asturias November 24th 2013

Long in the making - this weekend was inspired by tales of fabulous food, scenery, and weather (in the summer) by great friends Nick and Ceci - we were not disappointed! The usual early start commensurate with cheap flights (£40 return!) saw us meeting Lynny and Graham (travelling companions through Argentina in 2006) on a cold and dreary Friday at Stanstead. A trouble free flight, you get free speedy boarding with kids (and seat allocation stops the usual bun fight), saw us arriving in good time to make a full day of it in Asturias. Processing at the little airport was fairly straightforward - Heidi managed to get herself separated from the rest of us by running thorough automatic doors - which then promptly closed behind her and caused much laughter in the immigration queue - ... read more

Europe » Belgium » Walloon Brabant » Waterloo September 24th 2013

We were sent on our way early Tuesday morning last week by none other than David Cameron and arrived in Waterloo on Thursday evening – received by the British Ambassador – with plenty of pomp and ceremony along the way. It was a real challenge – and by lunchtime on day 1 I had cycled further than ever before in one go (40 miles)! The total distance I covered over the 3 days was 255 miles. An average of 85 miles per day and overall average speed of around 14mph. 18 hours were spent in the saddle (and don’t I know it). My top speed was 39.4 mph (down a very steep hill in Kent). I had 3 punctures on day 1, 1 on day 2, and was incident free from then on. I fell off ... read more

Europe » France » Brittany » Guern August 10th 2013

After a silly 4am start, we arrived in Calais at 9am to wait for Mike (Nick's Dad), Lucy (Nick's sister) and James (Nick's sister's husband), we eventually caught up with them on the motorway hard shoulder after Mike had tried to go round the roundabout the wrong way - whoops! Partially because I didn't know my right from my left!!!!! Having chosen 'car park Saturday' as the day to travel (the worst weekend in France to travel hence the motorways being called a car park) it was no surprise we spent a good 2+ hours in traffic jams. We got to our gite in time to get to the local village, Guemene-Sur-Scorff, for dinner in a gorgeous little restaurant run by an English couple, it was a traditional French affair with Fish and Chips for me! ... read more

Europe » Spain » Balearic Islands » Majorca » Cala d'Or June 15th 2013

Within the space of a month we are now on our third little break (we are not bragging even though it may seem that way!) - this one the official summer holiday (part 1). Enforced by leave running out at the end of June (poor us, I hear you say!). Actually, it was a great time to go away - the benefit from being outside of the peak holiday period - paying for 3 now makes a bit of a difference! The selection criteria for this holiday was as follows: Somewhere close - within a few hours flying Somewhere warm Somewhere you can fly to from Luton (our local airport) Somewhere with a pool, easy walking distance to restaurants, and family friendly After plenty of searching we settled on Majorca - Cala D'Or - annoyingly for ... read more

Europe » Belgium » West Flanders » Bruges May 18th 2013

Needing an excuse to go to Frnace for a booze run we decided to team up with the van deventers and rather than a day trip extended our time to a night in Bruges too. Leaving the house at 7am and being in Bruges for lunch is a result - having just driven back from Yorkshire today too, it is really quote close - and well worth the effort. We effectively had a free weekend, the money saved from the wine and beer we bought went into board and lodging for the day/night. Statying in the Bruges YHA was a stroke of luck. 15 minute walk fromt eh old centre, we had our own rooms and en suites - bunk beds and a patio/garden - all for less than 50Euros! Plus parking and breakfast..... couldn't have ... read more

Europe » France » Île-de-France » Paris May 4th 2013

After the longest spell in the UK for over 16 years (nearly 13 months), we have broken the duck with a quick getaway to Paris - without the kids. I'll apologise for the brevity of this entry as there isn't too much we can write about what we got up to (Paris + no kids = ??????), and didn't do anything out of the ordinary either! Sally very cleverly won a return trip in a competition at work last summer - thanks "the Big Kick" - and we decided to wait until Hector was old enough to be left for a couple of days, which coincided with our 4th wedding anniversary too. Eurostar was dead easy - and very comfortable with standard premiere tickets.... St Pancras is a great departure point - Gare de Nord a ... read more

Middle East » Turkey » Aegean » Oludeniz April 24th 2012

Holiday priorities have now changed somewhat. Whilst we both still yearn for the adventure of the unknown we have to consider Heidi as well - and our own sanity when travelling with a little baby - who doesn't want to sit still at all! Together with Nick being hindered by a recent knee operation (on the day of which Nick found out that he would not be allowed to go swimming on holiday as could not get his wound wet - on hearing this news, I had the upmost sympathy but then also had a little chuckle, of course forgetting that I would then be left to run round after Heidi in the pools....), myself being 4.5 months pregnant, one of us being a student we decided to opt for a last minute deal to Lykia ... read more

Central America Caribbean » Cuba » Oeste » La Habana October 3rd 2011

Ignoring all advice to take a local (European) summer holiday we decided to make the most of free air travel for Heidi whilst we can and went long haul to Cuba! It is a destination we nearly visited during our Central America trip some years back and is somewhere we have wanted to go to for a long time. We cheated slightly by booking an all inclusive but compromised with a few nights in Havana and also some trips from our resort into the interior - not quite backpacking - but with Heidi in tow we needed a bit of luxury and organisation! So, in true form Sally spent several hours on trip advisor to work out which hotel did the best buffet, found a good deal, upgraded our flights to Virgin Atlantic - and we ... read more

Europe » United Kingdom » Scotland » Argyll » Appin August 29th 2011

The August Bank Holiday provided a great opportunity to head up to the West Coast - coupled with the offer of accommodation in Nick (Zogs) and Ceci's new "Swiss Chalet" and an excellent deal on flights for the 3 of us the decision was made. We left very early on the Thursday morning which effectively gave us 5 days and 4 nights away - a proper break. Only having to take 2 days precious holiday was a real bonus too. A taxi to the airport, an easy Easy Jet flight (free speedy boarding courtesy of Heidi) and swift car hire at Glasgow airport, meant that having left home at 0500hrs we were in Glen Coe surrounded by mountains for lunch! A breakfast bap with views to die for was devoured and Heidi had had her first ... read more

Europe » Czech Republic » Prague April 24th 2011

The last 6 months have been a bit of a blur with our little new addition and a few days away was the perfect way to slow down and relax. Neither of us had been to Prague before so seemed like a pretty good place to go - especially as it was to be Heidi's first overseas trip! We managed to make the most of the UK bank holiday extravaganza with Easter and the Royal Wedding meaning 3 days of annual leave turned into an 11 day break! After a lovely family lunch on Easter Sunday we headed to Luton Airport early Monday morning to catch our flight to Prague. Wizz Air was our chosen budget airline (not that cheap when you add a bag in the hold and Heidi - I thought Babies went for ... read more
