Hola Back in BA and on dry land... thankfully!! A chance to come back and see the things we didnt the first time. And party some more with the locals. A football match We saw Boca Juniors play San Lorenzo, and boy it was amazing! Saw the passion of the fans, it was unbelievable. La Boca We went to the colourful streets in La Boca and bought some artwork and tangoed in the streets (those lessons coming in useful!!). Its such a lovely place. It has been amazing. I have loved Argentina the whole time and it is so sad to leave. There have been so many highlights to name them all....but I will miss many many things. We have booked tckets to see U2 in Santiago to make sure we leave!!! ... read more

Btw. if you click on the image to the right you see a satellite map of the place which you can zoom in and out. To quote Lonely Planet the Iguazu falls are not your average "isn’t gravity nice" type of waterfalls. This one is bigger, better and wider than all the waterfalls I've seen so far combined. Apparently there are close to 300 falls with up to 80 meters height spread out over 2km. As one tourist brochure claims 1.2 million liters of water run over the falls ever second. The waterfalls (the river to be exact) are also the border between Argentina and Brazil which gives both sides the opportunity to extract money out of your pocket. The Argentinean side gives you access to more waterfalls and has more walks (most of the close ... read more

Well I arrived back in BA very late on Monday evening, to the sweltering heat of the city. After the wind blown steppes of Patagonia, the still air and humid heat is almost oppressive, making movement rather on the uncomfortable side. Yesterday was spent saying my good byes to the rest of the group and Graciella (scarey, now on my own in the big city) trying to sort out a bed for the night, (succesful), book a bus to get the ranch (a double decker sleeper bus - wish me luck with that one!), get a new SIM card so I can recieve calls without costing the earth (not sure if it's actually working yet, no-one has actually been able to call me yet!), putting digital photos onto CD to send home (took ages) and replying ... read more

Hay bastante lluvia y relampagos. Its sticky and sweet. The type of rain I have never really experienced. I have to admit Im romanticising it a bit. The heat... its hot. The hot is why I decided to move here and whenever I start to hate the hot I remind myself of the decision I made. So far my impression of Argentina is the niceness of the people and the malls. At the end of my day in Argentina I can say I have been to two malls. And no, I have not bought anything. Clothing is more expensive than I thought. While food is much less. Imagin $4 american for a huge meal including a bebida of your choice and a postre. Thats nothing to laugh at. The strangest part of the day was going ... read more

After leaving El Calafate I spent three very enjoyable days cycling around Lago Argentino and Lago Viedma whilst listening to the White Stripes to get ot El Chalten. A pleasing combination of beautiful lakes, jagged ice capped mountains and funky rock. At the end of the first day I turned off the road and asked to camp in Estancia Irene. I was greeted by the extremely hospitable Juan Carlos. He not only offered me a room for the night but also gave me an extremely generous helping of cordero (chunks of lamb), with his own home made bread and a potato omlette that he had prepared earlier in the day and he also whipped out of the cupboard under his stove. After I had very gratefully devoured this we had about 15 minutes of basic Spanish ... read more

Rio is that beautiful woman you saw in the distance and finally approached. She is most of what you dreamt of when you saw her but she’s lived through a sorted past and accepts the failings of a society most only catch a glimpse of. Ahhh, Rio......... Such as beautiful yet unsettling place at times. I feel like I have spent more than 11 days there because of all the different experiences I had there. I rented a flat there as well and the manager, Mariana, was a tremendous help the entire time. I stayed in Ipanema, the pristine beach area located around the corner from the more famous (and dangerous) Copacabana. There were a few things I noted at the beginning: the mass of people, the heat (90+ with a lot of humidity) and a ... read more

See some movies associated with this blog When we arrived in San Pedro de Atacama we were surprised by how small it was. It is so famous, and so many people tell you how nice it is that somehow we expected something quite different. OK, the background scenery is amazing, a succession of enormous snowed capped peaks (with several volcanoes amongst them) which look straight from a postcard, but we didn't find the village in itself to be anything special. For starters it has just one cashpoint machine, attached to a bank that only opens for 2 or 3 hours on a Thursday afternoon, and with so many tourists needing money for accommodation, food and excursions, apparently it dries up quickly. Naturally with our luck it was out of order when we arrived. With only about £5 ... read more

Hello Everyone- Well it is getting close to Carnival time! Although this holiday is somehow tied to religion, it is a time with lots of colorful music, heavy drinking, exotic dancing, indulgent eating, or to sum it up, complete debauchery! We have our outfits all ready to go, the guys will be Captain America for half and Thunder Cats for the other half, while the ladies will be dressing up occasionally as Cleopatra - with very shiny (and little) gold outfits. It officially starts on Saturday the 25th of February this year, but the parties have been going ever since the start of the New Year. They do a lot of practicing to ensure that they are good and ready to party when Carnival arrives. As for us, we have not experienced too many of the ... read more

"Brasil, Brasil" - its carnaval time and those patriotic Brazilians were in full on party mode when we arrived in Rio in a huge storm. Well most of them were, we stopped at the Riotur desk in the airport for tourist information and the Carioca on duty got out a map, circled the Sugar Loaf, the Corcavado (Christ statue) and said - "well there isnt really much to do here except for the beaches" - hold on a minute, isnt the world´s biggest party due to start in just a couple of days.....? Well that´s Brazil for you - full of contradictions and myths. We were spending a couple of days in Rio where Julie and Dave would join us from the UK and then on to Salvador for the biggest street Carnaval in the world ... read more
