Damn these tests are getting difficult. And it´s still so much easier to put down what want to say on paper than to string a sentence together in conversation! How are we all?! And, most inportant, WHERE´S MY WOGEO CHALLENGE TM?!?!?!?! You´re running outta time my friend!... read more

South America » Bolivia » Potosí Department » Potosi February 23rd 2006

We're back!! Let us try and fill you in quickly with what we've done in the past week: Today we arrived in Potosi, the world's highest town at 4070m! We weren't here long but just enough time to visit the famous silver mines on which the people here prospered for years. As you can imagine, the mines are dark and damp, and pretty claustrophobic if you stay too long. The miners work long hours though, earning about 3 pounds a day for what is hard and monotonous work. As part of the tour we bought them all a bag of presents, consisting of: 2 packets of biscuits - to munch on A bag of cocoa leaves - chewing on these helps ward off hunger, cold, pain and altitude sickness A stick of dynamite - just to ... read more

The drive in to Rio was exciting with anticipation. We had come such a long way across the vast continent of South America, and done and seen so many things along the way, and here we were, finally heading to our last group destination. As we drive in to topwn, we spotted Corcovodo ( the Christ statue ) in the horizon. Our tour leader played 'Time of Your life' by Green Day, as a send off for our last time together on our Bus, who is called Frank! We pulled up at our hotel, The Granada at 2pm, and checked in to the rooms. Immediately at the hotel, the receptionist is one of the most beautiful girls we have ever seen on the planet, typical Rio! Me and a some friends then walked in to the ... read more

Mom, Aunti San and I boreded a buque bus ( a fast ferry) to Colonia Uruguay. We met a very nice man, Eduardo, who for a small fee drove us all around Colonia in his taxi and told us all about the place. Mom and Aunti San kept asking about real estate....after mom found out some of the prices she asked if there were any snakes. Eduardo said she would be safe in town. He also took us to the old bull fighting ring and also a small chapel where the bullfighters used to go to make offerings. These offerings consisted of small silver pieces from their suites. There were also small charms of different body parts people would offer as prayer to get better. Rows of feet, ears, hands, hearts, eyes, etc. The chapel was ... read more

Saturday the 18th. We packed up and left Iguassu, and today was a long 11 hour drive to Curitiba. Had had a great night out the night before seeing a performance of local dancing with a live band, and then clubbing in Iguassu, so just slept most of the long journey on the bus. We arrived at our campsite and it was now night. It started raining, and the campsite was wet and muddy. I was feeling pretty tired too, and after camping almost a week, I persuaded my tent mate that we should go for luxury and stay the night in a hotel just down the road, an option a few other people had taken. It was the right choice, a hot shower, comfortable bed, and it was dry! An added bonus was the Rolling ... read more

Welcome to Bolivia! After 24 hours of travelling after leaving the Pantenal we made it to our first stop, Santa Cruz. This hasn't got its own entry because we were only there a day and half of it was spent recovering from the long journey. However, it was a pretty town and the afternoon was spent in an Aqua Park having loads of fun! We loved the swimming pool as I was a bit fed up of sharing my water with fish and Eric had loads of fun playing on the slides. They managed to coax me onto 2 of them once, one involved a vertical drop and the other a swirling tub where you drop down the middle. Not particularly my idea of fun but it was ok! The people in Boliva look a lot ... read more

English Our south-American trip is getting into its more difficult part, we have left the easy-going and almost-European Argentina and crossed the border to Bolivia, from where we are writing now. Hence, this blog is meant to be a farewell message to the Argentineans and the Chileans and their wonderful countries. We still have to digest the overwhelming load of experiences we are taking with us after a month and a half. Astonishingly different landscapes have passed in front of our eyes, from the emptiness of Patagonia to the dried altopianos of the north. We have met a multitude of people from everywhere, some really exceptional, some others not. Among the last group, if by chance we find those bastards which stole Chiara's wallet in Mendoza... South America » Bolivia » Potosí Department » Salar de Uyuni February 23rd 2006

Yes, it´s taken a while, but I have some photos of the salt flats of southern Bolivia. It had rained shortly before we went there, so it was impossible to take the usual white glare/blue sky photos that seem to abound. However, I think I got the better of the deal, as the salar was then turned into an enormous mirror. The water was only a few inches deep above the white salt, so the reflections were perfect; so much so that my eyes had trouble discerning where the sky ended and the horizon began.... read more

Monday Feb 20 I don’t think I got the entire diary posted; I’ll try to put in the missing pieces tomorrow. The computer at the shelter is awful, all the keys stick, and it’s slow. Plus it’s a long walk, which I suppose it good for me…..but I do a LOT of walking!! Phew, I just answered the door, which is always a bad idea when you don’t speak the language!! It was a woman who wanted information about the English lessons here at the school. I tried to explain in Spanish that the director wasn’t here, and I didn’t know the price for the classes. It was really funny because she was under the impression if she spoke LOUDER I would understand better, and that’s not quite how it works! I know I was saying ... read more
