Hello all, just a quick entry today as thought i would upload my photos from iggassu falls and give you a bit of an update on Carnival. Have been recovering today as it has bee a mad couple of days. Travelled from Paraty to Rio on Friday and left the dragoman group as we were doing our own thing for carnival. So to say goodbye, had a few too many vodkas and went to the red and black ball which is to celebrate football fever-the big brazilian football team flamengo whos colours are black and red. Had an excellent night (no phtos im afraid as took my disposable camera). The next day we went to the football match at the marcarena stadium to watch flamengo play botafogo. We should really have supported botafogo since thats where ... read more

Don had not been feeling well for several days and after we decided that it was probably not because of all of the overindulging we had been doing in Buenos Aires, we found ourselves at an old student hospital outside the city center. It took surprisingly little time from the moment we stepped into the Urgencia (Emergency Room but also the first door we could find) to the time we were able to speak with a doctor. We were pleased not only to not have to wait very long but also to get out of the make-shift waiting room which was really just a stark, dimly-lit, concrete-block corridor with seating (some of which was not broken). The student doctor who met with us was very friendly and also spoke some English (we decided that our broken ... read more

We are currently sitting in the aeropuerto of Baltra - an island five minutes away from Santa Cruz in the Galapagos. It’s Saturday morning and we are waiting for our flight back to Quito after five days sailing the Galapagos Islands. We flew in to Quito last Sunday 19th February, from Cuba, where we stayed overnight before flying 1,000 km off the coast to the Galapagos on Monday morning. Landing in Quito was certainly and experience! The airport is situated pretty much in the middle of the city, which is surrounded by huge mountains. It provided an amazing view, but also I think the worst turbulence I’ve experienced to date. After landing, our taxi ride was just as treacherous, through torrential rain, hail and flooded streets of Quito. Couple that with an old leaking car without ... read more

Time for another entry- I haven’t written since Wednesday because I have been really busy working on the English curriculum which I have to start teaching in a few days, and we just got what appears to be reliable internet connection here at the school yesterday. Presumably I am going to be able to get my own computer on line tomorrow. Well see. I won’t hold my breath! I have had 3-4 hrs of Spanish lessons each day, and have gone out to the big market a couple of times. What an adventure especially if you don’t speak the language! Today Roxana went with me to the market to show me where to get cheese, and it turns out there were about 4 or 5 big piles of it right in the aisle, I just didn’t ... read more

Sob sob... My sunglasses was snatched! We were getting ready to board the bus when a teenage boy just snatched my sunglasses and ran off! I was stunned for a moment. Sob sob... my reliable Oakley! What am I going to do without it for the rest of the trip? The only consolation was that we were not hurt in the process. It´s only the 2nd day to my SA trip and something was stolen oredi. By the end of 4mths, will my 20kg bag be reduced to 10kg when I come back? Hmph.... ... read more

I arrived at my new place around 11:30 today and I love it. Everyone seems friendly. There is Julia who greeted. I was suppose to share a room with Ed and Lee but was put with Barbara instead. Lee seemed a bit disappointed. I also met the German (I think) couple who are in the room on the street. The people are friendly but I am feeling quiet. Its funny knowing who I am...loud and full of life...perhaps a little too typically American and here I am just the opposite. I feel like I am playing a trick on them and will pull out all the stops when they are least expecting it. I will blow in, crushing open the doors and leaving them tossled and frantic. (I love the idea of leaving people frantic.) After ... read more

South America » Chile » Santiago Region » Santiago February 26th 2006

(Note: I have no pictures of U2! I brought two cameras down with me, a really big camera with interchangeable lenses (Canon EOS 20D), and a small point and shoot (Canon SD450). I brought the point and shoot with me to my friend's house, but they made me leave it home because no camers were allowed and they were threatening to tak e them.) U2, needless to say, was amazing. When any international group comes to Chile (or any other country in South America) it is a HUGE deal. The country stops. The newspapers has a special section about the concert, the news covers where Bono ate lunch. 80,000 Chileans spent at least $70 US for their tickets, and most of them know the songs by heart, even if they don't understand the lyrics. The stage ... read more

After 33 hours of bus, here I am in Bariloche...It looks like Switzerland, with chocolate shops, wooden houses, ski shops, ski resorts, lakes and Saint Bernards...and they even cook fondue (I haven't tried because I doubt the Argentinian cheese can compete with Gruyere, Comte or Apenzeler!) In fact, it is located in the Argentinian Andes at the North of Patagonia. I arrived there on Thursday after hours of the desertic landscapes of Patagonia with 1 sheep every 10 km and 1 town every 200km. It is really worth it spending time in a bus to see this, it is amazingly empty!!! But when you arrive here, everything is green, forrests and lakes...Friday I had a good hike starting from a ski resort to reach a refuge higher in the mountain (refugio Frey 700m higher and 10 ... read more

To all the really really cold people in Canada, What a hot and sunny day I'm having here! Hopefully these photos will cheer you up. So I've been by the zoo today, through the rose garden and another botanical garden. I'm heading to Uruguay tomorrow with a buddy. Buenos Aires is a great place to come visit. Very modern and easy to get around. Great prices. So how much snow did you guys get? Richard... read more

not sure if you are viewing the maps at all, but this one's worth having a look at! Click on the link and read the comment at the bottom See movies asssociated with this blog here As we mentioned in our last page, we had decided to cross into Bolivia in a 4x4, a trip lasting 3 days and 2 nights and which promised to be both interesting and a lot of fun. We went with a company called "Estrella del Sur" which was the only one in town taking the traditional route, i.e. crossing the Salt Flat despite the fact that it was 80% under water. The other companies were not taking the risk, meaning they would be spending the second night in Uyuni instead of in the Salt Hotel, which we thought sounded like ... read more
