Puerto Montt to Puerto Natales Further details from our last entry (for other travelers) about transferring from Puerto Varas to Puerto Montt airport. From P.Varas, we caught a local minibus from Av. Del Salvador (in front of Cafè Real) to P.Montt bus terminal for $1000p each (about 30min trip, buses about every 15min). Then took the large ETM bus to the airport for $1200 each, buses every half hour and trip takes about 20min. We stayed one unexciting night in Punta Arenas on 14th Feb at Residential Roca (about one block south east of the main plaza on Av. Magalles) which was clean enough, if a little noisy, on the main street for $6000 each (with breakfast). Caught the Fernàndez bus to Puerto Natales for $4000 each (about 8 departures daily), takes less than 3 hours. ... read more

So we eventually reached Buenos Aires after another long bus journey 18 hours to be precise! So what can we tell you, lets start with the taxi ride back from the bus station - we had wondered why there are no theme parks in BA but once you've been in a cab here you understand that there really is no need for any more white knuckle rides! There is ridiculous amount of traffic and thus about 6 lanes to most main roads with one having a total of 14 lanes, yes 14, however this apparently is not sufficient for the agentinian who straddle the lanes to fit about 25 cabs door to door. Passengers, it is advisable to keep your hands inside the vehicle at all times if you want to keep them! So we got ... read more

In this episode - the 3-day Tour, The Rasta Llama, Gringo Bingo and the search for the Lost City of the Drinkas….and also getting to Potosi, Carnival in Oduro and La Paz. (mainly due to cyber USB phobia in Potosi and Oduro without which this would have been in long ago!) Well, hasn’t Bolivia turned out to be another gem! Back in the land of cheaper prices and good service. Pity to have missed so much of Chile South but you know…and maybe things were better down south as one has to say that not only was Chile expensive, the service in many places was not up to scratch, and Bolivia has the prices and friendliness of my experiences in Argentina. As the road into Bolivia had been closed we had come in thru’ Calama and ... read more

Well, that´s been a wierd one. Friday night my good buddy Gustav had a big party to celebrate finishing his Spanish studies at the school after something like 4 or 5 months in total (including one month in Bs As). Saturday I was meant to get up to join some other students at the beach in Pichilemu, but overslept, so didn´t really do anything all day. Saturday night, not having anyone to go out with I stayed home and got drunk with my host family. I´m sure that must be good for my Spanish, but it´s strange how it only really starts to flow when the alcohol does too.... So Sunday, today, the day I´d decided (not being at the beach) to dedicate to seeing the sights of Santiago, was really quite lame. After 2 weeks ... read more

Rebecca: Did you see that ripple? Don: No, There´s nothing there. What are you talking about? I don´t see anything. Both: Wait. What the $&% is that? A first hand account of Don and Rebecca´s first encounter with a glacier. After a long 7 hour hike over the highest pass in our seven day trek, we are resting nearby our camp. Our view is of Glacier Gray in Torres Del Paine National Park in Chile as it enters Lago Gray. The view is spectacular, as a giant wall of ice over 100ft high is marching slowly in to the lake. We have all seen on tv giant pieces of ice breaking off these glaciers and go crashing into a lake or ocean. We are waiting patiently for such an occurance. We see the tour boat come ... read more

Bis bald, Raphael... read more

Hola, Well it has been a very exciting week or so with lots to report although I don't really have enough time to type it all. After spending a night in Loja, a charming university city towards the south of Ecuador. Enjoying it but not loving it, I left the next day for Vilcabamba, where I am now, possibly the most gorgeous place I have ever been. After spending a night drinking rum with a nice, but quirky, British lady I stumbled back to my amazing hostel about a ten minute walk out of the small town. The next day, the first day of Carnivale, I moved to another hostel to meet up with some friends and to test out my new watergun, nicknamed Terminator. After settling in, Eva and a new friend Ory and I ... read more

The weather broke on Wednesday night and went from boiling hot to chucking it down and breezy (a bit like summer at home really) although, it has started to get brighter and warmer again today. I´m also still not so hot at the Spanish. Perhaps it was a bit ambitious or maybe I just expected to have learnt more by now. Still, it´s a good experience and I´m sure I´ll learn more while I travel through south America. I am contemplating doing an extra week (giving a grand total of four) but, I´m not sure if it is worth it. The crowd at school are a good bunch if, generally, much younger than me. We had a good night out on Friday but, by god did I pay for it when I eventually got up on ... read more

What an amazing, amazing concert!! Not only did we manage to get tickets to see U2, we got to go to the official fan club pre and after party! Not only that, but during the pre party we won access to the inner circle!! We are so lucky! I have never won anything in a raffle before... so couldnt believe it when he read out my numbers!! We were in the inner circle with people that had queued for 24 hours, and they were pissed off with us for having wristbands and being foreign and at one point were telling us to go home!! (welcome to Chile!) Lucky we were with some locals and everything was ok.. but I suppose its understandable if you have been there all night with no sleep! Franz was support - ... read more

I said a final farewell to my room mates who I had shared with for the tour, and got a taxi from the hotel at 7am to the International Airport. It was a horrible feeling to leave Rio and my friends, especially as I was missing out on the Sambadrome that night, but I had to move on. The flight over the city was again a breathtaking sight, and it didn't take much time at all to reach Sao Paolo, under an hour. I watched some English football highlights in the airport, then put my bags in Lockers, and decided to get a bus in to the town to have a look around. I got there at 1pm, and to the main high street Avenue Paulista. Sao Paolo is apparently one of the largest Cities in ... read more
