Hola from Cusco. As we rest our weary muscles after the Inca Trail it gives me a chance to update you on travels so far. After Puno, we spent a couple of days in Arequipa, a pretty city set in a valley with volcanoes in the distance. There are two things you need to know about Arequipa. It is the home of Juanita, an Inca Mummy found at the top of a nearby mountain when a neighbouring volcano melted the snow, thus revealing the body. She was a teenage girl chosen as a sacrifice in a time of crisis who walked up to the 6,000m + mountain top to her fate. There were several mummies found in the region and it is a grisly insight in to Inca Culture. The Santa Catalina Monastery was toted as ... read more

And so to the home of the Incas, and Paddington Bear... My trip to Peru was neither long, nor original. With time short, I basically devised a plan for a short, sharp hit on the jewel in the thorny crown of South American travel, Cusco, and Macchu Picchu. This is probably the most established tourist centre in South America, and dont they know it.. from the touts at Cusco bus station to the ski resort like prices at the Macchu Picchu cafe, you are reminded that you are certainly on the tourist conveyor belt. Leaving Rachael behind in Bolivia (she´d done the Inca trail last year), and arriving in Cusco at 4am, after a 13 hour bus journey from La Paz, followed by 4 unpleasant hours waiting for the bus company office to open, wasnt the ... read more

Yeh I'm starting to get a bit of colour back into my skin now after a week bumming around on various beaches on the Pacific coast in the North of Peru. The surf hasn't been anything worth renting a board for but it's definately been nice to be swimming in waves and salt water again thats for sure! I also re-discovered the joy of reading which is exciting for me, I picked out the smallest book there was in the book exchange back in Huaras(90pages long) which just happened to be a John Stienbeck classic so I finished it in my first day at the beach! So that's what I do now, i read books at the beach. Also I met a cool French-Canadian guy in Huaras who was travelling the same way as me so ... read more

Well I planned on doing this 3day circut trek up in the mountains behind Huaras, but when I arrived at Laguna Churup at the end of day 1 I liked it so much that I decided to just kick it there for a couple of days and then go back to Huaras. And I had the whole place to myself apart from about 5 other trekkers per day that came up for a look, and a stray dog I called Henry who made sure that not one scrap of my sloppy food went to waste. He was a very hungry and ugly dog, I wish I'd taken a photo of him to show you. next time aye... read more

Hola from Puno on the shores of Lake Titicaca (stop sniggering at the back). I'll keep it short and sweet today but we do have photos. From Potosi we went to La Paz, the highest capital city in the world via Oruro where our truck was broken into (none of our stuff was taken but others in our group were not so lucky). La Paz was a hectic city where all life seemed to be happening on the streets at maximum speed. We did a city tour and learnt that Bolivia has had more revolutions than presidents and saw the bullet holes from last years revolution (that wasn't in the guide book). The second day we were there we went mountain biking. Serious downhill mountain biking. Starting at 4,900m we dropped 3500m downhill over 64km along ... read more

Well Lima was nice, a bit expensive but really quite a cool city. I was planning on doing a bit of Para-sailing and swimming at the beach while I was here but the weather has been a bit cold so that'll have to wait untill I'm a bit closer to the equator. Meanwhile I'm off up to Huaras tonight and plan on draging out my tent for a couple of days camping - but apparantly it's been snowing up there in the national park over the last couple of days so we'll see about that too. Hope everyones good back home, I miss you all a lot.... read more

South America » Peru » Ica » Nazca » Nazca Lines October 5th 2004

Woziz! this morning I was in this little town called Nazca where there are these amazing lines out in the desert around the town that are over 2000yrs old and no-one really knows how they got there. Some of them make up shapes of animals but you can only see them from the sky, so although they are pretty sure that it was the old Nazca race of people that made them, there are also a few theories about some sort of alien influence. I couldn't make my mind up, but I do know that they are absolutely amazing and definately one of the most intersting things that I've seen so far on my trip. My photo's didn't work for all of them so I missed a few cool animals like the monkey which was my ... read more

At the moment I'm in a Colonial city in the south of Peru called Arequipa, it's a beautiful city with heaps of volcanoes around it to climb and also the second deepest canyon in the world that you can hike down and back up if you're keen, but since I was still on the rebound from the Inca Trail I opted for the lazy 2day tour where you end up up at a Condor sanctury for a bit of bird watching - and it was great. Pretty strange though, we turned up at about 7:30am and saw nothing untill like 8:10 when they all came out to stretch their wings for about 20mins before flying away to look for food. They're sooo big and cool, my visit has just reconfirmed that i still want to be ... read more

South America » Peru » Cusco » Inca Trail September 28th 2004

I just got back from the 4day Inca Trail to Machu Pichu and it was absolutely amazing! We walked for about 6hrs a day, camped each night and ended up at the old Inca ruins of Machu Pichu. It was hard work with a lot of uphill and big steps, and the weather was pretty cloudy and foggy for the first three days and it even rained a bit one day, but when we got there on the fourth day the weather was perfect so we were all so stoked! My group of 14 was made up of a lot of Americans, an Irish couple, a South African woman, a Pom and me, and we had a lot of fun! And our guides and Chef were great too, we ate so well the whole time and ... read more
