Peru - 3 Months I flew from San Jose back to the Uk for 2 weeks and then straight to Lima, Peru. A night in Lima then a 23 hour bus ride to arrive in Cuzco. We spent a few days here visiting the local ruins and enjoying the facilities in Cuzco to acclimatize to the altitude, the Sacsayhuamán ruins were particularly impressive. We left Cuzco, for the Inca trail start, at midnight due to the affect of transport strikes and a few kilometres from the start we encountered a road block and were surrounded by protesters, who knifed/slashed our tyres. The guides set up camp on the road-side and we had to walk to the beginning of the inca trail next morning, an extra 6 km walk to the beginning of the tour. The ... read more

Flying over the Nazca Lines was an amazing thing to do, from such a height I could clearly see, with my own eyes, the massive carvings of lines, trapezoids and animals, like spiders and monkeys. A real mystery and a very significant site in the world if we are to understand what our ancestors were up to. I love this site due to the large rocks that fit together like a giant puzzle but you can't fit paper between them, this is a megalithic site and would not have been easy to build with our modern technology. Again there are plenty of researchers who can tell you more details, David Hatcher Childress is a good place to start. An amazing location set in the Andes Mountains and an amazing site. I won't write about the sight as there are many books written about Machu Pichu or even documentaries, who can do a much better job than I could at detailing the advanced techniques they must have used to build this city. I visited the site as part of a tour along the Inca trail and was also given a tour of the ruins. I was there during my 2 year trip around South America, for more details of my time in Peru follow the link below. http://www.travelblog.org/South-America/Peru/blog-497136.html... read more

Hola amigos, Here I am in Tumbes, just south of the Eduadorian border, sweltering to death. Spent the last 4 days in Lima staying with an American girl called Holly, who we met in Bolivia. She is working there as a teacher and lives in an extremely rich area. All the houses had big surrounding walls, even bigger mean-looking guard dogs, and big cheery security guards, armed with huge guns - eeek! I know they are there for my protection, but it is still freaky walking down the street and being watched by ten armed men! Being the swankiest area, restaurants were pretty pricey compared to other places, so one night we decided to stay in and cook our host a meal. Big mistake! We went along to the supermarket and bought tonnes of noodles, veggies ... read more

I’m now in Arequipa after taking a nightmare bus journey. It started at 7am, and at about 11am we decided to ask the driver to make a bano stop (crap bus = no toilets) and he mumbled something in Spanish which included the word “claro” so we thought we had understood. About 20 minutes later we stopped in a tiny village to let a woman get off, and we went to ask the driver again. He told us we would be in another village in about an hour, and didn’t want to let us get off. An hour!!! No way!!! We basically marched off the bus, saying “un momento por fovor” and ran behind a wall to do the business in hand. The dumb-arse driver then proceeded to drive the bus forward by about 10 yards ... read more

Here I am back in Cuzco, Peru, feeling slightly delirious for two reasons really: the horrendously strong malaria tablets I have been taking (producing strange but cool dreams!) and the fact that I have had no sleep for the past 5 days. Why? The infamous Inca Trail... The Inca Trail runs for 44 kilometres through the Andes, ending at the ruins of Macchu Picchu, one of the few Inca settlements that were never found by the Spanish, and hence never destroyed. Like most people, we decided to do the hike with a tour group, the advantage being that they provide (and more importantly CARRY) all the food and camping equipment that we would need for the 3 nights and 4 days it takes to hike the trail. We were actually really really lucky with the weather,we ... read more
