We have arrived in the capital city of Peru! We are staying in the suburb of Barranco, a relatively clean and quiet area of the city, but there is not much to see here. We have strolled around the area (which didn't take long!), seen a viewpoint and wandered into a re-enactment taking place as some sort of celebration of Barranco... We've also taken a bus into Miraflores - another Lima district north of Barranco and closer to central Lima. It's nice, and more lively than Barranco, but very commercial and there is not much more than a main plaza and lots of shops. Yesterday we had a leaving dinner for Esther who has now finished her part of the trip, and afterward we went to 'Circuito Magico del Agua', a large park with a number ... read more

Not sure who will be reading this other than me & And......? After a very long journey from London to Lima via a five hour stop in Madrid (Inc a 3 hour delay) we arraived at our first destaintion...the first of possibly 14 countries.... So, Lima what we can we say? We have been staying in Barranco, a rather nice little area overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Miraflores is the bigger, more well known area about half an hours walk away, either along the beach or along the cliff tops.. either is a pretty cool walk. Our hostel is fine and the people all seem friendly enough. A promising start. Central Lima is another matter. We got a cab ride there on wedesday and were in town for about 2 hours before cabbing straight back to Miraflores.. ... read more

Hey all.. today we finally started to get into the swing of things time wise. Been a bit screwed up with how things were in B.A with their eating dinner at 10-11pm and not going out until about 2am but we seen to be ok now. Went through miraflores and then Barranco today, it was all pretty good. Having a chat to the travel lady at the hostel tomorrow to sort out our buses and hostels as we travel down the coast to puno so that should be all good. the hostel at the moment has a large bar, fooseball, pool, table tennis and a projector. We havent met as many people here as we did in buenos aires so i think we are all missing the friends we made down there but we will see ... read more

We caught a Taxi out to the airport around 3 hours before our flight left which left us plenty of time to book in. The flight to Santiago (Chile) was good and we had a 6 hour stop over to kill time. Not much to do in an airport for six hours but to play cards, eat, talk and duty free shopping. We both decided to buy some "Pisco" (rum) so we could make Pisco Sour back in Australia; we also brought a few other knick knacks. The flight to New Zealand was around 12 hours and we both slept for about 7 - 8 hours of it so it went pretty quick, then we had two hours to kill in New Zealand so we ended up watching some of Wimbledon (Hewitt and Roddick) Couldn’t get ... read more

We're here, safely deposited at the Barranco Backpackers Inn. It was a long trip, luckily with only minor adventures. The hostel seems really nice. The hostess reminded us several times that this is our home now, and offered us pisco sours and a trip out to the clubs as soon as we arrived. We are feeling good about our decision to take it easy tonight, so we are about to tuck in to some very comfy looking beds. (But we still had the pisco sours.) There's continental breakfast that should rouse us in the morning, so we'll fill you in on the high points of our long journey in the A.M. Until then, we are safe and happy, and I hope you are too.... read more

Hello everyone hope you are all well! We have covered a lot of miles in the last 10 days, Whistler - Vancouver- London- Leicester via Ashdon (it´s in Essex for those of you who don´t know) - Birmingham - Newark - Lima. So as you can imagine there hasn´t been much time to update anything really. We said our goodbyes to the snow and wonderful scenery and people of BC and have been enjoying the heat and bustle of Lima for the past couple of days. We´re staying in Barranco, a seaside suburb outside of the city centre, and what a good idea that was after experiencing "downtown" yesterday. I guess it´s pretty much the same as every major city centre, busy, noisy and polluted but we weren´t expecting it to be so hot and pretty ... read more

O.K. This really is my last day in South America. I fly out at eleven,on the dreaded overnight flight to Toronto. I never sleep on planes so I know I will be useless for a day or so. Yesterday was a blast! With two Brits and Servas friend we explored downtown Lima and the Bohemian communities. At the Cathedral we arrived just at the end of the ordination of some Bishops. Riot police were on the streets; nuns and priests seem to outnumber the members of congregation as they poured out of the cathedral. We went in to take some photos, then proceeded on to the catacombs. It is worth the 5 soles to visit, and if you are sneaky enough, you can get that photo of the skulls arranged in a circle. Barranco is another suburb of Lima. Christina (the mexican girl) and I visited barranca for a couple of hours in the afternoon. We got there by collectivo - local transport, that is basically a minivan with people hanging out the side yelling the destinations. Barranco was quiant, with a pretty plaza de armas and a library. We had a look inside and they still use the Dewey Decimal system and to get access to the books you have to give the Dewey card to the librarian who will collect it from a locked room. When we went during the day it was a sleepy little area on a cliff overlooking the sea, but seemed to have a good night strip with clubs and pubs. The photos speak for themselves. ... read more
