After landing in Lima last night I checked into a hostel in the district of Barranco. I was really overwhelmed about being in a foreign country. I don´t know that I ever felt that lost when I was in Europe. I went to sleep to see if I´d feel better in the morning. When I woke up I had a BBQ pork bun that Mom had packed me before I left and eventually made my way outside. I wandered to the shore, and around the district of Miraflores. After mustering courage to ride unofficial public transport I boarded a taxi collectivo (shared taxi) and proceeded to get out in the middle of a busy street (it was stopped at a light but I got out when it just turned green) where I almost got runned over ... read more

Central Lima is pretty dead after sundown and our hostel was like a ghost town, so we decided to move out to Barranco, a suburb of Lima on the coast. A beautiful little town, however, we went from one extreme to the other. We stayed in what can only be compared to a frat house, with the lack of sanitation, lack of women and the gratuitous drunk dude passed out on the couch. Oh well. We spent the next day walking around town and going to see The Incredible Hulk. What a piece of shit! I mean a real mess. Can´t catch a break in Lima.... read more

Graham and I are currently waiting to get our taxi to the airport to catch the flight to Cusco and begin our Spanish course, so what better time to fill you in on the first few days of our adventure. To say that everything has gone smoothly would be a lie. Firstly, our connection from Madrid to Lima was cancelled and hence we´d need to catch a flight at 08.40 on Tuesday morning, following a brief stay in a Madrid hotel. This wasn´t particularly bad news as we expected a swanky hotel to be offered by the airline Comet and there was also a rumour that we´d be bumped up to first class. The flight to Madrid worked perfectly and we were right about the hotel. Massive. After a cracking buffet and a few cervezas at ... read more

This being the first entry I feel obliged to blog our means of arrival as well as our first few days in Barranco. Having flown for two and a half hours on a plane boasting legroom about three inches shorter than the length of your thigh, I was surprised to discern the words ´business class´ from the attendant who took our tickets on boarding out long-haul from Madrid. For some completely unknown reason we had been upgraded and spent the next 12 hours in luxury! Seats reclining to a fully horizontal position offering massage and memorising your most comfortable position, menus offering veal and tunabelly and hostesses offering unlimited champagne made for a surprisingly quick flight. Having enjoyed a wide variety of unexpected business-class experiances we landed and found a man holding a ´Bedraski´sign... We had ... read more

afternoon ¿Chicha? had this strange purple drink at lunch today its made from maize and its really sweet, very popular here and very tasty ... however the guineapig carcass in the supermarket did not look so appealing. had a nice walk to the next district (miraflores) this morning and stayed there most of the afternoon avec our new american friend Erin. Its like the Kensington of london so we felt right at home haha. They have a great big shopping centre set into the side of the cliff overlooking the sea hwich was really cool. Stayed there for lunch and then went bowling lol not too peruvian but great fun all the same. Walking around Barranco and Miraflores was great the buildings are really old and theres a lot of colonial influences, its really beautifull. Went ... read more

at last ! we are here, a day later than expected but here at last. the flight was really long but we survived. my one meal for the twelve hr flight was peas, carrots and greenbeans with some tea... yum yum. The stupid guy at immigration only gave me and péte 30 days visa even though we are allowed 90 so now we have to go to the embassy and pay for an extension muh, the ride from the airport to the hostel was possibly the scariest taxi in history. About ten minutes in they pulled us to the side of the road and both the driver and the guy who met us at the airport stepped out ... read any guide to peru and this is not good, having soiled myself thinking we were about to ... read more

For all of you that said we were crazy for going to South America, that it was dangerous, that we shouldn´t trust anyone, this is a tribute to the incredible South Americans we have met in our travels. Rachel and I have been the recipients of so much kindness and help from people whom we could never repay. Many times we would have been lost or in some trouble without their help. I would like to introduce you to a few people we have met who blessed and inspired us. Giamba is an increbily humble sculptor we met in Yepeyu, Argentina. He has made good money from his artwork, but chooses to live with his family in tents on a campground that he is helping to restore in his small town. His passion is learning the ... read more

We are leaving today! We have been in Lima, the capital of Peru, for the last couple of days. We are staying in a very wealthy area here and it feels as though we aren´t even in Peru! There are American stores everywhere, including Starbucks and Tony Romas, BMW cars, very few street vendors, and less amigos greeting us with a buenos dias. The city is incredibly divided between the extremely wealthy and poor, and it is a stark reminder of the reality here in South America. Easter Sunday was spent waking up at 4:30 a.m. to watch the procession of the risen Christ. The procession began after 4 a.m. mass with over thirty men and women carrying an enormous shining white float covered in waxed choclo (Andean corn), waxed grapes, hundreds of candles, and a ... read more

Thur. morning, just finished a great breakfast at Safe In Lima. After the last blog came back to the hostal and relaxed a bit. As always, started with my cold the follows me when I first head out on travels. The little guy showed up a day early, usually, he arrives about day 5, and it was day 4 when he arrived. However, I am fighting him back with some zinc stuff and he´s not able to get through the defence of zinc, yea zinc. Gerson arrives from Iquitos today, we were going to leave Lima for Tarapoto on 2/15/08, but are going to Star Peru Air and change our departure date to 2/17/08 to allow more time in Lima. Mike, thank Bill H. for the additional time to travel, if it wasn´t for him, I´d ... read more

On to LIM at 9:05am, arrived 2:05pm, 10 minutes early. Who said flights are delayed, just lucky I guess. Now that the boring stuff is gone lets talk about Lima and Barranco a little suburb of Lima. Very pretty plaza with restaurants, cafes, and BARS, that´s what I needed, due to Heat and Humidity, get some moisture back this old body. After checking in at Safe In Lima Hostal in Barrnco, this place is great, they made flight reservations for my friend in Iquitos, who will arrive Thur.; flight Res. for both of us ... read more
