Foreign tourists safely roam in the midst of the bright lights of Miraflores. They’re in a comfort zone. The posh coastal district of Lima calls them to what is achingly familiar. Need a pair of shoes? There is Payless. Don’t like the powdery dust that passes for instant coffee at your guesthouse? Then pick up a double mocha flat cinnamon decaffeinated latte with an imported caramel twist at Starbuck’s. Hungry? Kentucky Fried Chicken is right around the corner. Miraflores glistens with casinos, high rise apartments, and terribly beautiful women. It is where most non-Peruvian tourists come to enjoy the nightlife in Peru without having to plan for anything, including their safety. Circling the tastefully manicured centerpiece of the floral trimmed Parque Kennedy once, even I have let my guard down for the first time in Lima. ... read more

From the beginning I have received the same type of advice. Don’t do this. Don’t go there. Don’t walk at night. I feel imprisoned by factors beyond my control: my attire, skin complexion, and passport. There is a small part of me that wants to get mugged just to get it over with so I can get on with this trip. “So, Ricardo, where do you want to go today, my love?” Marisa is the owner of the bed & breakfast that she insists I call my home while in Lima. If she were any more pleasant, I might have to smack her. In her early fifties with short, wavy salt and pepper hair, she has started this little operation from the ground up. It is uncommon enough to come across a woman as a small ... read more

It is a city where I have never been, but one with which I am all too familiar. Lima does not wake up gently. Dawn brings about a concert of revving diesel engines, incessantly piercing jackhammers, and overly sensitive car alarms. Overstuffed minivans wobble as they race through intersections lacking stop signs, traffic lights, or a traffic officer. The limeño version of the classic scene of a golden retriever taking in the breeze out the passenger window differs. In place of the canine, it is one of ticket agents protruding his neck out to scream at pedestrians to see if they too wish to subject themselves to several minutes in a contorted position among new friends. Some passengers lean over the side in order to catch a breath of the solid exhaust particles wafting in the ... read more

So as the title suggests, the first few days here have been accompanied by much dog-spotting, especially shouts of "Look Jon, there´s a Baxter!" We´ve done a fair amount of just wandering about along the coast and into town, exploring and getting used to being here, but nothing really of note as yet. To be honest Lima doesn´t feel like the most exciting city - it´s different enough from what we´re used to to feel distinctly unfamiliar, without being properly crazy/exciting/out-there in the manner that a city on a foreign continent perhaps ´should´. We´ve been warned several times by fellow travellers to be wary of the locals trying to take us for a ride, and while it does seem like everyone´s got some sort of hustle, it´s not too difficult to get on with what you´re ... read more

We had chosen to stay in a wee neighborhood called Barranco near the coast, its a pretty little bohemian place with lots of Arty shops and restaurants around there is a great vibe to the place, it seems to be an area that has come into its own and established itself as the place to be for an easy going cultural experience in Lima. We started with lunch in a place called Rustico in the Parque Municipal, it was a buffet lunch and at 28 soles a plate we thought it was a wee bit pricey, wrong, the food was incredible, you could eat as much as you wanted, it was criollo Peruvian fare which is very rich and hearty, lots of stews, meats creamy sauces, those of you who prefer vegetarian options this place is ... read more

The bus trip to Lima was uneventful though somewhat tiring, I slept for a few hours on and off and awoke around 5.30am to see the beginning of the sun rising over the desert. It had mellowed as was less symmetrical with its cliffs and deep quebradas and had smoothed out into rounded windswept dunes and gentle contoured vastness as far as the eye could see it threw of hues of pinks browns and oranges as the sun rose further and another day dawned. First impressions of Lima were not positive, the eternal grey sky did nothing to help the look of the structures of woven grass walls, tin or grass roofs that greeted us at the far north of Lima, litter decorated each street with dogs and grimy little children playing in the dirt, this ... read more

Today we wanted to go to some ruins, but they were closed so we ended up going to Barranco, which is a district just a little bit south (3-4 km) of Miraflores where we are. Adam's dad was feeling better and decided to join us. The five of us squeezed into a taxi. When we got there we walked around for a bit, and then went to the Museum of Electricity. It was small, but had some cool stuff in there. Lots of old technology -- old record players, phones, jukeboxes, ovens, etc. Also a jacob's ladder (which isn't as good as Adam's), a small Van der Graaf generator, and a theramin! Afterward we walked toward the beach, but reached a dead end, so we headed back and got some lunch at a small place that ... read more

Finally got out of Lima Tuesday morning. It surprised me as a pleasant city for such a large place. I admit i stayed in the safe districts of Barranco and Miraflores most of my time. Miraflores is where all the gringos hang out with a large park, street markets, airlines, fastfood, small smoky cafes, lots of live music lots of nightlife. Barranco is smaller more bohemian neighbor, with a nice plaza surrounded by shops and day time activity, with plenty of nightlife. Lima is on the pacific, where they have good surf break, beach restaurants and bars. Just above are the cliffs where hangliding is a regular sport. I met many interesting people mostly travellers but a few locals that I will keep in touch with. Took a day trip to Lunahuaco, where a group ... read more

Hey, this is Nat again. We're back in Lima at the first place we stayed in the neighbourhood of Barranco. Yesterday (was that really only yesterday?) we went to Machu Picchu again! We went up in the morning and spent about 3 hours wandering around. It was cloudy and rainy again when we got there and so we climbed up to what is called the "funerary caretaker's hut" and while we were sitting and recovering from the climb, the clouds began to lift. At the beginning it was like you could step off a ledge and fall into nothing but white clouds. Then as the clouds lifted, the whole city of Machu Picchu slowly came into view. I got some cool shots of the clouds lifting but unfortunately I won't be able to post them until ... read more
