Goal #3 - Bragging Rights I spend most of the week on the patio with my laptop - typing away. I keep a steady stream of coffee running through my bloodstream to maintain focus. But sometimes I switch out the coffee for a liter of Inca Kola. Inca Kola is considered the national soft drink of Perú. It began in the mid-1930's when a Peruvian (José Lindley) born of English immigrant parents began experimenting with lemon verbena - a perennial shrub native to parts of South America. The beverage was instantly popular. For most of the rest of the century, Perú was the only country in the world where Coca-Cola was unable to dominate the market. Unable, that is, until 1999 when the Coca-Cola Company gave up and bought 50% of the Lindley Corporation to create ... read more

My final days in Lima were very enjoyable. I felt like I had learnt a decent amount of language considering the short amount of time, made new friends and had some fantastic experiences. Barranco On Saturday I went to visit an older area of town called Barranco. Funnily enough we spent a a fair while driving around Lima the night before trying to find a particular bar so I had already seen a bit of it by car. Whilst wandering around we met a very friendly builder restoring the back area of the main church, in order to build more tourist restaurants. I was fascinated at the social interaction between total strangers, which I learnt was quite normal. Auri, Luis and the builder spent fifteen minutes sharing stories about where they lived, what they do, and ... read more

We arrived in Lima from Iquitos after a 2 hour flight. We were on the other side of the Andes now on the Pacific Ocean and the climate was slightly different! After 2 months in sometimes lovely, sometimes oppresive Brazilian heat we were back to the cold! The shorts and vest I was wearing didn't really do the job! On the taxi trip to our hostel I had my first ever view of the Pacific Ocean, but it was dark so I could only see the waves crashing on the shore. The view of it in the morning was not something to write home about though! The coastline of Lima is not pretty and the pollution that engulfs the city is choking and very visible. Our hostel was very nice though, run by a British guy ... read more

Not much to report from today. We woke up at 0700, packed our gear and caught a cab to the airport for our flight to Lima. The plane had the smallest sitting space I’ve encountered on any aircraft ever, I couldn’t sit at all without having an indentation of the seat in front embedded in my kneecaps. I managed to move to a vacant exit row as soon as the seatbelt sign went off. Jo had arranged for someone to collect us at the airport and take us to our hostel. We were shown to a beaten up Toyota Sprinter with no seat belts, indicator lights or suspension. The guy was nice enough but a complete maniac behind the wheel, struggling to overcome severe understeer on most corners. We had thought the driving in Buenos Aires ... read more

So we begin in Barranco, a suburb of Lima which is described as the bohemian artists quarter. I heard alot of negatives about Lima so my expectations were not too high. But we arrived to the very modern airport straight into the taxi our hostel (called One Hostel...it was really great) had sent for us. As I would soon discover, things work pretty well here. Granted we haven´t deviated from the well beaten path just yet, but the infrastructure in Lima is very well developed and there is clearly alot of money here...how well it is distrubited is yet to be seen. We slept like babies after our 24hours of travel door to door, and spent the next day exploring the city. I was surprised how few people were around...I guess I was thinking of the ... read more

We stayed in an area called Barranco at the Barranco Backpackers Inn. Very nice place, clean, great help w getting back his bag. We met a few people from the US, Spain and Canada. Randomly we ran into a kid from Oregon at on of the church/museums and we ended up going Paragliding together. The weather wasnt the clearest but still it was great. ... read more

After landing in Lima last night I checked into a hostel in the district of Barranco. I was really overwhelmed about being in a foreign country. I don´t know that I ever felt that lost when I was in Europe. I went to sleep to see if I´d feel better in the morning. When I woke up I had a BBQ pork bun that Mom had packed me before I left and eventually made my way outside. I wandered to the shore, and around the district of Miraflores. After mustering courage to ride unofficial public transport I boarded a taxi collectivo (shared taxi) and proceeded to get out in the middle of a busy street (it was stopped at a light but I got out when it just turned green) where I almost got runned over ... read more
