Parity is a lovely little seaside Colonial town with lots of pretty churches, buildings and cobbled streets. When we arrived it was still raining unfortunately but we did a tour of the town and went out for a beer, listened to some live music and then had a superb fish dinner in a nice restaurant. It was great after the amount of red meat we have been eating at the BBQ style restaurants. the town cam alilve at night with street performers, markets and i had my tarot cards read by an Argentinian gypsy woman - nothing too earth shattering in the reading i´m afraid! There was a number of waterfalls nearby and a few of us took the local bus to a waterfall which is used as a natural waterslide. Another few decided to cycle ... read more

Hey Guys, Well after a short bus ride we arrived in Paraty, which is a small colonial town on the Coast. We lucked out in the fact that the day we arrived was Corpus Christi and the locals cover the roads throughout the colonial part of town in amazing artwork made out of coloured sand and woodchips(see photos). It was pretty cool. Later that evening we watched the church procession and as they proceed to walk over all the artwork I guess it turned out well that we didn't wait to take pics;) Aside from the colonial town the other main attraction to Paraty is it's beaches, unfortunately for us the weather was not cooperating for any beach time. The next day we awoke to a super rain storm so we opted to catch up on ... read more

Oi! I am writing to you from Paraty, a beautiful British Colonial town just three and a half hours bus ride West of Rio. (The t in Paraty is pronounced like a tc, so pronounced Paratchy). We arrived here last night at about 7pm. But I have skipped a couple of days, so here is what we have been up to : On Thursday 4th I embarked upon a Favela Tour with Marcelo Armstrongs company. The tour was excellent. I felt shocked in two very different ways: the poverty and hardship some face in terms of working themselves and their families out of the favela is horrible, but the standard of living is much better than i thought it would be. The tour lasted three hours and we visited two favelas: Rocinha (biggest Favela in Rio) ... read more

In a state of disarray, Chrissy and I had no idea we would end up in Paraty until our boat arrived back at the mainland from Isla Grande. We ran into Roey and Nero, Israli travelers we kept crossing paths with :) and they described a quiet colonial town on the Costa Verde (green coast) only a short bus ride from the port of Angra Dos Reis. Since we had no other plans it sounded perfect! Paraty (pronounced Para-che) is a historic town with fresh seafood restaurants, large cobble stone streets, and picturesquely restored Portuguese colonial buildings dating back to the 1500's. We found a quaint little place to stay, the Paraty Bed and Breakfast, and enjoyed the peace and quiet of the hotel and its location just outside of the low lights of the historic ... read more

I'm sorry about yet another Paraty/party pun in the title, its just that it seems to be the done thing in this little town. Every hostel claims to be a paraty hostel, every bus is a paraty bus and every church is a paraty church. Or something like that. So, after the debacle of the previous blog, we only arrived in the town fairly late. There were 4 of us tourists on the bus, and due to my slight misfortune we stopped for a bit of a chat as we got off the bus. Rhys and Anne, an Aussie/German couple had one hostel booked, Nak, from the Basque Country had another one booked and me? Well I had nothing booked of course. Obviously, I was just going to follow one of them like a sheep, and ... read more

In search of a little quiet time we headed down the coast to Paraty, a cute little town that was once central in the gold route from Minas Gervais mines to Portugal. The drive down was one of the most stunning of the trip as we swerved our way round jungle-clad bends, overlooking peaceful inlets with golden sand, picturesque rocks and waves that gently lapped the shore. We arrived in the evening and quickly settled in to our hostel where we met some friendly faces from our time in Florianopolis. A short walk along the beach as the sun set and our rumbly tummies demanded attention. I'll be honest with you. I'd dreamt up this title for this blog for quite a long time. It just seemed oh so perfect, even if there was no fighting involved, as all it takes is a simple bus journey from Sao Paulo. Or does it? Perhaps aware that I had a blog title in my mind, Brazilian police stopped our bus for a passport check just minutes outside of Paraty. I handed him my passport, and answered all of his questions to the best of my ability. However, it soon became clear that he didn't like the fact that I'd come into Brazil from Paraguay, and he decided to have a good search through the bag I had with me on the bus. Naturally, he didn't find anything he shouldn't have done, but still, this ... read more

So after an uneventful journey, albeit some fantastic scenery, we arrived in Paraty. I have to say that the bus service would put England to shame. It was the equivalent of the English National Express except that the buses run on time and the seats have loads of room. In fact they we had more leg room than on the 12 hour flight from London!!! We soon arrived in Paraty bus station so with the page from the lonely planet with a map of the town in hand and bags on our back we set of for our hostel. Unfortunately for us after 10m we got accosted by a guy trying to tell us he was from the local tourist board and wanted to help us find our accommodation. Despite getting a curt response fro me ... read more

When I last wrote we had made it to the bus station in Rio. Next stage was to purchase tickets for Paraty. After a bit of searching we found the correct operator and asked if they spoke English. No, so Brim, using the worst rough guide phrase book in the history of phrase books managed to ask for 2 tickets. With a bit of pointing at the computer (computer said yes!) the tickets were purchased. With about 10/15 minutes to spare we loaded our bags (with appropriate baggage stickers attached) onto the coach and settled down. A few minutes later having sat down we were asked to move - apparently we had seat numbers! The coach, was actually not bad and there was considerable more room than on the BA flight. 4.5 hours past rainforest covered ... read more

Well, here we go again! We took a boat to a little town an hour and a half away to catch a bus to Paraty. The boat was great fun on the way to the town. Esteban colleague happened to be a on holidays with his girlfriend. He had a little guitar. We played and sang on the boat accross to the town. The time flew in. Tunes from Oasis to Ocean Colour Scene and Johnny Cash were sung. Great craic altogether. So we got a public bus to Paraty. The journey lasted 2 hours. We witnessed amazing views of the coast. Breathtaking is probably the better word to describe the views. We arrived in Paraty at approx 4pm. We all had a walk around the town. Esteban organised us for a bike ride into the ... read more
