Scalloped, white-sand beaches with warm, clear water, schooners sailing to nearby islands, huge granite outcroppings and domes covered by verdant tropical jungle--what could be better? Maybe a charming, well-preserved colonial town with a pedestrian-only center, a palm-lined river walk, and nearby waterfalls. That’s Paraty! I’d not planned to visit this small town of 32,000 because after all, I’m from a beach town, Santa Barbara. An overnight bus from Puerto Iguazu, Argentina, had taken me to Curitiba, Brazil, for a scenic train ride. However, when the train was canceled, I sought a small-town refuge to prepare myself for visiting the metropolis of Rio. Remembering the fab Paraty stories from other backpackers, I decided to wander there. I was incredibly lucky with tight bus connections and managed to get from Iguazu to Curitiba to San Paulo to Paraty ... read more

Having decided we couldn't spend the remainder of our trip on a Brazilian beach we chose to ween ourselves off gradually. Cue Paraty, a beautifully historic seaside town with cobbled streets so old walking in a straight line is difficult, even when sober! The town floods during the winter months and so the buildings are constructed with the doors raised and any art work depicts puddles everywhere. It's charming.  We've had a great time here although it does lack the poetic tranquility of Iha Grande, which is going to be hard to beat. We've lazed on the beach (we would) and enjoyed a real Brazilian BBQ where the meat and drinks keep on coming, especially if you look as English as us! We felt incredibly welcome, not to mention full.  Sadly not all of the gastronomic experiences ... read more

Ok well after we last signed off we were on our way to Ipanema (jo recovered from the hangover in a few minutes), and we went to the best all you can eat restaurant I think I´ve ever been to (not quite within a travellers budget) but the queue to get in was 50 strong! We then headed to a Favela party which was amazing (the highglight being a bunch of Brazilian gansters on the dancefloor breaking out a pre-rehearsed dance routine and looking like a boy band!). We met some great people in Ipanema and Botafogo had an amazing time and then took the journey south to Ilha Grande (apparently a Big Island!). After quite a gruelling hike to our Hostel we found what can only be described as one of the most beutiful places ... read more

Oi! After reluctantly leaving Florianopolis after a great stay we hopped on an overnight bus towards Sao Paulo. 10 hours later we grabbed another bus, this time 6 hours, to our next destination in Brazil- Paraty. Paraty is one of Brazil's most beautiful colonial cities and is located right on the Atlantic coast about 4 hours south of Rio. Once again it's loaded with tons of beaches, islands, mangroves and generally beautiful scenery. Once a month when there is a full moon and the tide is high the seawater rises to a level which results in the flooding of the Historic Center. About 6-10 inches of water flows in and fills the streets. We unfortunately did not get to witness this but from the pictures it looked pretty cool. The water doesn't stay in town for ... read more

Hi Guys, Wow, I am actually managing to write another blog before the 10 day mark. Thought i should take advantage of the internet situation. So, we are currently in a gorgeous little brazilian coastal town called Paraty (pronounced pah-rah-chi). I have to tell you ... portugese is actually a wee difficult. Sure it looks like spanish when its written, but its pronounced all funny and hard and nasally - like french. Ive taken to just apologising before i begin speaking and then using a cross between english and spanish with the odd portugese word thrown in (thankyou/goodnight/very good/etc). So, boy did we have an adventure leaving floripa. We actually managed to get out of the place alive, and on the right day, and make our bus to Sao Paolo on time. We like to travel ... read more

We awoke around 9.30 and automatically felt the heat suffocating us. The sunlight was gushing from under the door and we knew it was going to be a scorcher of a day. We soaked up the surroundings over a long breakfast of fresh fruits and contemplated what to do with the day. We juggled with the idea of going to the beaches on the outskirts of town, but Emmerson (the hotel propritor) was not abash to inform us that the beaches were somewhat polluted and seldom used. Emmerson recommended a boat tout that could take us to quaint idyllic beaches and private islands for only 30r$, equivalent to roughly 10 pounds so we jumped at the oppurtunity and 30 minutes later we were embarking onto the top deck of the Estrela da Manha. We acquired two ... read more

Today was quite a sad day as we would are leaving Rio. We have had an amazing 9 days here and have been fortunate to get to experience so much. Are next destination is the colonial town of Paraty, so this morning we headed to the bus station around 11ish to get the 4 hour bus south of Rio. The next available bus leaving was at 1.30, so we only had a couple of hours to wait. This time flew and before we knew it we were on the Costa Verde bus to Paraty. The bus ride was very scenic, it was along the coast the whole way, so we got to see some wonderful sights. The only down side was that the coast line was on the opposite side we were sitting so i never ... read more

I organized some transport to escape Rio de Janeiro before my liver failed completely. A gas-powered jeep arrived at my hostel to pick me and some other backpackers up for the journey south. The ride was pretty uncomfortable though. Squashed in the back of a jeep with a pile of heavy backpacks hanging precariously over my head for two hours was not much fun. The jeep bounced its way over hills and round tight corners en route to the paradise retreat of Ilha Grande. The island held promise of pristine beaches and sleepy villages and so, hopefully, the uncomfortable ride would be worth it. I transferred from jeep to boat - an old wooden ferry laden with local passengers, backpackers and supplies. The ride was picturesque, despite the overcast conditions. We bounced slowly over calm waters ... read more
