Hello all! I hope you are doing well and enjoying the snow.......... We have spent the last few days in Paraty, a colonial town a few hundred kilometres down the coast from Rio de Janeiro (took about 5 hours to drive there). We are now with our tour group which consists of Joaquin (our guide), Alice (our friend we met at the airport from near Leicester, she´s now sharing with Caryl & I), Ruud (from The Netherlands), Milla & Lucy (from England) and Juurgen & Maire (from Norway). It´s a really nice little group. Paraty is a lovely place with cobbled streets (really hard to walk on in flip flops, especially when it had been raining, and it did rain, a lot) and small white painted houses with brightly coloured doors. We had a little wander ... read more

So today we had the opportunity to go on a boat tour of the islands around Paraty. Our day started early (we left the hotel at 9.15) but it was a great idea, as we had plenty of time to tour around the various islands and beaches of this lovely tourist town. Amy finally got the chance to see the turquoise water she always wants to see and we had fun feeding the wildlife as well (monkeys, iguanas, fish and possums). Brazil´s been very fun thus far and today´s beach day was no exception. Plenty of time to relax, swim and just enjoy the tropical weather. Neither Amy nor I got sunburned and her feet are doing much better today, so everything should be back to normal soon. We´re off to Rio in the morning and ... read more

Well, after a long day of traveling, we´ve made it to Paraty. It´s this beautiful little coastal town with several beaches and lots of surrounding islands. The Falls were great and now it´s time to relax a little before setting off to Rio in a couple of days. The resort itself is quite beautiful, with a small swimming pool and our room on the ground floor just steps away. The food in both Argentina and Brazil has been great thus far - if a little pricey. I think we´re going to head for a short walk into town (it´s very safe here parents, dont worry) to get some money exchanged and, perhaps, do a little bit of shopping. Amy forgot to pack socks and she´s tired (and sore) from wearing mine. It´s off to the beach ... read more

So.. .(only kidding) We caught the boat back to the mainland yesterday, then travelled a couple of hours on a packed local bus down the coast, past a nuclear power station, and on to Paraty - an old colonial town with brightly coloured windows and doors, and roughly cobbled streets that flood at high tide. I say flood, but I guess that´s more at the Spring tides - it did come in a bit yesterday, and I went back to one of the churches last night to see if I could get a nice photo at the top of the tide, only to find that I was at the top of the tide the fist time... a slightly dejected walk back to the hotel... We all went out for a shrimp supper last night, then managed ... read more

29th September - Day 23 The bus from Angra to Paraty took 1 1/2 hours but this time we were on more of a local bus. There was no where to put our rucksacks and the seats were really not comfortable. As soon as we got to Paraty we were bombarded with different people trying to peddle their hostels. We looked at 1 place which claimed it had a pool but it was basically a paddling pool, full of dirt in their backgarden. We settled on this place called Family Hostel where we had a private room ensuite, double bed, fridge, tv all for R$130 for 3 nights (about 45 GBP). Paraty is a small historical colonial town which caters for tourists. The historical centre is a maze of cobbled streets hiding bars, restaurants, galleries and ... read more

I was sad to leave Isla Grande but I had to make my way to Sao Paulo to get my flight back home, but before that happened I had a brief stop in Paraty. To get to Paraty I got a local bus to the bus station and wandered down the main street to the ocean which is where the Misti Chill hostel was located. I would recommend this hostel, it had a good vibe about it and the manager there was from new Zealand so we entertained ourselves with Flight of the Concords anecdotes. Unfortunately the respite on Isla Grande the rain had come back. Paraty is a sleepy old colonial town and I spent the day wandering round the cobbled streets, apart from that the main things to do are a number of day ... read more

So, from Rio i joined onto an organised 21 day overland tour ending in Buenos Aires. The tour had 20 people on, and you paid upfront so didn't have to worry about booking hostels or buses, as it was all in, as was most of the food! The vehicle is a huge mercedes truck converted to carry people and supplies, pretty cool thing actually. I arrived to the first meeting 40 minutes late as i was held up at the Favela tour (not held up, but caught in traffic). Anyway, i walked into a group of people i hoped it wouldn't be. It looked like a bi-annual accountants who like to collect stamps and socks meeting. We were roomed in a decent hotel the first night, and i was luckily paired up with a fellow Mancunian ... read more

From Iguazu we decided to take a bus to Sao Paulo and from there directly on to a little coastal town called Paraty (pronounced "Parachi"). This was a pretty gruelling journey totalling over 24 hours but we decided not to stop in Sao Paulo as the guidebook suggested the main sites were museums so not really our kind of place (i.e too cultural) so we decided to spend our time in Brazil in and around Rio. The bus ride from Iguazu took an "interesting" turn when we were raided by the military police. It did not help that we cant speak a word of Portuguese but the policeman kindly explained in English while he was searching through Joe's bag that it was a "Blitz" - oh much clearer then. When they had searched through 90% of ... read more
