So four hour bus journey from Rio and we land in the quaintest little town...cobble streets and the lot (ruck sack was carried and not wheeled...boy is it heavy!!). Stayed in a cool little hostel in the historic centre. Only had one full day here so we spent it on a day trip on a boat around the coast line. Really enjoyed it, swam with loads of fish (we even got ed into the water), visited beaches,, the usual. First time to get some colour but red wasn´t the colour I was aiming for...we´ve now moved to factor 50!! Spent the evenings wandering around the town, cool littel sopt would have liked to spend more time there....but onto Florinaopolis we went. ... read more

Hello again Have spent the last week checking out some of Brazils coastal hot-spots. Our first stop was Buzios, a lovely little coastal spot just north of Rio - not your usual backpacking destination, a bit of a playground for well-heeled Brazilians. As lovely as Rio was it's been nice to break away from the city for some chill out time. Not much to report activity wise as spent alot of time chilling on the beach (how tough), but we did have one eventful boat trip. As we only understand a 'poco' Spanish (think that means a little), let along Portuguese, we struggled for the whole day with the itinerary. Infact, we almost missed our boat back to the mainland - still sitting on the beach we noticed that loads of people were frantically waving and ... read more

After the craziness of Rio at Carnaval, Tracy and I headed inland to the cooler, calmer highland town of Ouro Preto. This old mining town was once the richest place in the New World, but when the gold dried up all that were left was the beautiful buildings and the deliciously cooler climate. We spent 2 wonderful days wondering the cobbled streets and visiting the old baroque churches built with gold money and suitably decorated. With our batteries recharged, laundry done and overnight bus tickets in hand, we headed back to Rio and down the coast to a tropical island full of beaches and forested hills. Ilha Grande's beaches were stunning and visiting them all the more rewarding given that the best are only accessible by hiking over the lushly forested hills. The beaches were all ... read more

Handing back the keys to our adorable apartment in Buenos Aires, Gerborg and I said goodbye to Argentina and boarded the bus for an 18 hour trip to the Iguacu Falls which border Paraguay, Argentina and Brazil. I was completely overwhelmed by the size and seemingly endless range of cataracts surrounded by miles of lush tropical jungle. We mustered our courage and hiked down, down to the point called The Devil's Throat which jutts out in the center of the main curve. Getting sprayed by the mist, I was revived enough to get back on the bus for another 17 hours to our real destination: Sao Paulo! One of the beauties of going on exchange, like the one Gerborg and I did in Toulouse, France in 2006, is having reunions with the friends we had so ... read more

So we eventually left Beunos Aires. At one point it looked like we never would, especially when we forgot to book our bus to Sao Paulo and got delayed by a day! You must be wondering what a 32 hour bus ride was like, we had no idea what to expect. Well luckily the buses here are really good, teh seats go back pretty far and you get fed aeroplane food. Its a bit like a good seat on an aeroplane I guess. We even got a glass of champagne! Kind of wish we hadn´t though, the bottle had a picture of a bus on and it tasted horrible! The first 24 hours were fine, we watched a few of the films they showed and just slept. Then it started to get boring but without too ... read more

Ho Ho Ho Merry Christmas! Yeah okay we´re writing this on the 14th of January, so it doesn´t really work now I know. For those of you we haven´t had a chance to speak to or write to, Happy Christmas, hope it was a splendid one and you got what you wished for. So, onto the selfish point of this whole thing, to tell you about us. We spent 6 nights before over and after Christmas in the small coastal town of Paraty in Brazil. We arrived on the 23rd and the sun was shining and it was hot, daaaaaaaaaamn hot. We had arrived via three planes, three taxis and two buses, taking 23 hours from Ecuador. We were also therefore daaaaaaaamn hot and rather sticky, so we gratefully checked in, showered and set the fan ... read more

After 32 hours of travelling, involving 5 buses, many bus stations and many road side cafes, eating too many empanadas (or pastels are they are called here), we finally arrived in the town of Paraty. Paraty is different to other Brazilian towns. It is only a few hours from Rio, making it a popular holiday spot. It is a bustling, small, quaint village with cobbled streets and a picturesque harbour. It has many beautiful beaches within 20 km. We had booked ahead into the Paraty B+B, and were very grateful for this when stepping off the bus as it was a cool 36 degrees, with the kind of humidity that causes sweating instantly. As you can imagine after such a long journey, our tempers were very much in need of a shower and some space to ... read more

The morning of our departure from Ilha Grande was wet and cold, timing seemed to be perfect. After having bought our tickets for the ferry we had to queue up to board our boat - which departed at 10am. Arriving in Angra dos Reis we took a local bus to go to Paraty. That was cheap (1.5€) but very uncomfortable and long journey with stops almost every km. For a distance of only 98 km from Angra to Paraty we needed about 2 hours. But due to the location to the ferry very convenient - just continue to your right until you reach the bus stop. There are tourist helpers who speak English, so you never get lost. While I was asking a few locals about directions I found 200 R$, which is about 70€. Initially ... read more

This blog should be another series of photos showing a South American country as a hot bed of football. I know this is a difficult concept to visualise after those shots of an overflowing Estadio Centenario, but at least the games went ahead as planned. A lesson to those planning a Rio footballing experience - give yourself options. Flamengo would surely play a big home at the Maracana, wouldn’t they? Well not necessarily, in a country that has been known to switch a kick off so as not to clash with their version of East Enders. Flamengo switched their game ……. and played it in the jungle city of Manaus to get a crowd ….. the sort of stunt that Juventus would pull in Italy for a meaningless Champions League game if they could persuade UEFA ... read more

PARATY Paraty was a beautiful little town with lovly cobbled streets with loads of good shops and restaurants. We spent 5days here chilling out although we didn´t get much sleep as our room was over a local night club which opened at 2in th morning and went on till 7. We also took a 1hour local bus ride into the jungle down a dirt track. The beach ended up being not so great and we then realised we were stranded as the bus wasn´t coming for another 3hours. We decided to star walking in the middle of nowhere and managed to get a lift with 2gay south americans who were nice enought to take us back to their hostel in the jungle while we waited for the bus. Whilst there they shared an amazing bottle of ... read more
