Tony & Karen say Paraty The colonial centre of Paraty or the 'Historic Centre' as it is called is beautiful and has not changed much for hundreds of years. The buildings are small, painted white and adorned with latticed windows and colourful painted borders. The cobbled streets and lack of traffic (no cars allowed, only horse and carts!) make it a lovely town to stroll around, especially at night as the cafes and restaurants are lit up with candles. Paraty has become the home to many artists, poets, writers and other arty farty types so it is full of lovely artisan shops, galleries and bookshops - you could spend hours browsing here and we both kind of wish we were finishing our trip here as we could imagine filling up our backpacks with lots of trinkets ... read more

Well since my lastblog i have found sun and my skin in no longer white, it is slowly going froma bright red hue to off brown colour. My nose was soo redtheother day that Santa rang me up wonderering would i guide his sleigh ! So i left Rio on an overland truck with 19 others on boardmade up of mainly ozziez, but also english, dutch, american and 3 other Irish and drove a short drive South Paraty. Paraty is a reaklly sweet village with cobbled streets, white washed buildings and coloures doors, just outside the town is a long stretch of golden sandy beaches. Although we did´t get to enjoy them till the 2nd day from the momentwe arrived it rained solid until the nextmorning, which meant we had to put our tent up in the ... read more

We finally got to Paraty, a beautiful colonial town by the ocean, after catching two coaches. First stop was Curitiba then Sao Paulo and then finally Paraty. There was no way I was getting back on the cattle truck the tour uses so two of us booked a coach. We were told by various bus lines that there was a direct bus every hour from Curitiba to Sao Paulo but that was not the case. We had to wait at the Sao Paulo bus terminal for eight hours. We were warned that the Sao Paulo bus terminal is one of the most dangerous in the world but we were fine. Some of the young men were obvious in their staking out of your luggage but we kept ours close to us. Our hotel in Paraty was ... read more

Paraty & Jabaquara Campground, January 25 to 30, 2008 Visiting the Pantanal was scraped because of … wait for it … too many mosquitoes! Turns out the hidden agenda was a six day stay at Jabaquara Campground. This place is situated along Jabaquara Beach. People walk out from the town to sit by the water. There is no surf to speak of. The beach sand is not free of beer bottle caps and other refuse ... would not lie here or walk barefoot. Paraty is an old, pleasing town on the Atlantic coast, four hours from Rio and closer to Sao Paulo. Its importance was great when gold was discovered in Ouro Preto. The Golden Trail is a stone pathway into the mountains thatwas used by mule trains and slaves to get to the gold fields. ... read more

So people its been a couple of weeks since I last bared my soul to you (and for those of you who saw my facebook profile my pasty rear!) With about a week to go before Carnaval, we decided to head along the South coast of Brazil to the small colonial town of Paraty. Other than the cobbled streets, quiet bay and plentiful seafood restaurants, there´s not much here to do, but baring in mind Carnaval is just round the corner it´s probably for the best! The proverbial calm before the storm. Well you´ve pretty much established by now that we like to freestyle and ´wing it´. This time however we did do some forward planning and Brad spoke to the hostel in Paraty too see if they had availibility...´yeah no problems we are quiet at ... read more

Note: This entry was not written by Mike Bebernes, though the pictures are his. Caparinhas. Sunscreen. Sunburns. Hammock naps. Açai (pronounced A Sie Ee) simple and Acai con granola. Acerola con laranja sucos. Snorkeling. High season prices. Paradise. Mystery Rash. This has pretty much been our life for the past month. Brazil has been one long beach trip, which is exactly what we wanted. After we left Buzios we went back to our beloved Rio for a couple more days before heading south again to Ilha Grande. The first night we arrived in Rio we went straight to Beach Sucos which was our favorite snack shop while staying in Ipanema. While there low and behold we ran into Ali once again! He informed us that the very next day was Ana´s birthday and we were of ... read more

This final blog is loooooonnng overdue as we have been at home for about 6 weeks now! So will try and get it finished. After Rio we caught the bus down to Ilha Grande (the big island) off the coast between Rio and Sao Paulo. This was a pretty easy transfer compared to some we had on this trip, and only a few hours later we arrived on the ferry to the island. Ilha Grande is a beautiful island, with no cars, and no ATMS, just beaches, a few shops and restaurants - the perfect place to relax before heading home. We stayed at a hostel called Aquario - seems to be the place where most people stay here, right on the beach with a natural swimming pool made by building a few stone walls into ... read more

16th-18th Dec - Hoped the ferry back to the mainland then a bus to Paraty, another 2 hours south. The drive down is spectactular like all of Brazil that we have seen to date. Just blue seas, with green tropical mountains all along the coast. The only way I can describe Paraty is it´s the most beautiful little town I´ve ever been to. The old historic part of town is all quaint white walled buildings with the doors and windows painted bright reds, blues, yellows and so on. The roads are made of rocks, and sprained ankles must be a regular occurence. When it´s the king tides the roads fill with sea water and they go up the streets in rubber dingies. No cars allowed on the streets, just the odd horse and cart. And all ... read more

Hello! Well, I’m off exploring again after my quick jaunt home. I really enjoyed being back home and strangely enough didn’t want to leave again, but now I’m here, I’m definitely getting back in the swing of things! Typically I found myself starting this new leg of the trip sitting behind the devil child from hell, who insisted on throwing her chair back at every opportunity, then climbing on to the back of it to shout at her friend who was behind me - she was so close that I couldn’t look forwards otherwise I would have head butted her - god I love children!! We started our journey in Rio, arriving early in the morning with warnings of ´bag slashers´ringing in our ears, it was not without trepidation that we left the airport and hopped ... read more

Oi!! Hello again to anyone still tracking my whereabouts. We made it across the Atlantic after too nice a break at home. It made it quite hard to leave again, but here I am starting the other half of my trip, the final barrier between me and "real life". We flew into Rio de Janeiro where we spent a few days to readjust and get back into the art of backpacking. It´s harder than you guys think. We found an "alright" hotel in the Catete region of Rio (translates as cheaper and less than sparkly). Having gone to bed at 7.30 pm on our first night, absolutely crackered from flying, we were unexpectedly woken by knocking on our door, by a lady bringing us breakfast!! How cool is that? It was a stale roll with jam ... read more
