THE DEATH ROAD.....AARRRRRRRGGGGGGHHHHH!!! No seriously it isn't that bad. If you have no common sense and no idea how to handle a mountain bike on a dirt track than maybe this isn't for you. But for most kids who grew up tearing around their neighbourhoods and hitting some "sweet jumps" as Napoleon Dynamite would say it is one of the most enjoyable and exhilarating rides I have ever done. After sifting through all the agencies in La Paz I ended up going for Barro Biking which were charging a mid-range price of 380 Bolivianos (a bit under $40US). They had nice Giant bikes with disc brakes which was all I really wanted. I don't usually wear shinpads, elbow pads and a motorbike helmet when I ride back home so why would I want to wear that ... read more

You gain strength, courage, and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face. You must do the thing which you think you cannot do - Eleanor Roosevelt This is quite a thing to tackle on the tourist route if your heading through La Paz. But it´s not called Death Road for nothing. It is the worlds most dangerous road due to the number of lives it has claimed. The North Yungas Road (also Grove's Road, Coroico Road, Camino de las Yungas, El Camino de la Muerte, Road of Death, and Death Road) is a 69 km road leading from La Paz to Coroico. It is legendary for its extreme danger and was named in 1995 as the "world's most dangerous road". One estimate is that 200-300 travelers were killed ... read more

Phew I made it! I successfully made it down the World Most Dangerous road on a mountain bike in one piece and loved every minute of it. The Word Bank has officially named a very high and narrow mountain pass in Bolivia, the worlds worst as it has killed the most people on the planet. Trucks and buses have gone off the side not to mention the amount of tourists who have lost control of their bikes and toppled off. The fall is sheer and very real (nearly 1 km) - I don´t think I have concentrated as hard as I did while going down the track in a long while. This was obviously an AOA (Amy Only Activity) as Giss was too scared but I had him well prepared should he have received a knock ... read more

Day 607 (25.11.08) We'd opted to stay in Coroico after our bike ride the day before as the bus to our next destination (Rurrenabaque) would pass close by on it's way from La Paz, thus saving us several hours of travel. It also gave us the chance to spend a few hours in the small town of Coroico which perches prettily on the edge of a hillside overlooking some spectacular scenery. As we'd wandered the town the night before we opted to explore a little of the surrounding countryside before our transport left at around lunchtime. We hooked up with Isabel and Christian and Caroline from our bike tour and persuaded a local taxi driver to take us to the natural swimming holes a few km outside town. We thought this would be a nice way ... read more

Hey Everbody So we arrived in Bolivia the other day, very smooth border crossing with no issues whatsoever. We arrived in Copacabanna and as you can imagine we all felt it necessary to sign the song. Not much to do in Copacabana, but it was very pretty with the lake in the background, and the white beaches. Made you almost feel like you were in the tropics....ALMOST. On Thursday we left Copacabanna and headed towards La Paz. Little did we know we had to cross the lake and our bus had to get on a "ferry" where it rocked precariously back and forth to the point that I thought we would lose it. Passengers were NOT to be riding in the bus, but instead got to take a tiny boat over, with enough lifejackets to replay ... read more

Remember the scene in Animal House where they are initiating the brothers into the frat at the Omega house (the jock´s house) and they are paddling the pledges, specifically Kevin Bacon? Every time he gets hit he has to yelp, "Thank you sir, may I have another?" Well that is exactly how we have felt in Bolivia. It has seriously gone full force at us the entire time we have been here. Around each corner has been something else absolutely ridiculous; however, we are completely in love with the country nonetheless. We decided to take an alternative route to get into the Amazon Basin town of Rurrenabaque involving a bike ride down the Worlds Most Dangerous Road , then a bus ride down the southern part of this road, followed by a three day canoe trip ... read more

La Paz - Bolivia To get to LaPaz (Bolivia’s main capital) was a journey we will never forget. Imagine this: The bus journey was 12 hours long overnight. We hop on the bus at 8pm and remember the Semi-Cama and comfort buses don’t exist in this country. So we embrace the bus and its features and remind ourselves that we will be off in 12 hours. As the bus begins on the gravel road 7 hrs into the journey we have only just stopped bumping out of our seats and our chairs sitting back up right every so often as they never stay locked into place. We finally began to fear less for our lives as the bus stopped swaying and looking like it was going to tip over. Jana said a prayer as she remembered ... read more

Polly: We returned to La Paz for a night and hooked up with some of our friends from the GAP Adventure´s tour. Whilst looking for their hotel Ross caught some dude pick-pocketing me, but he only got away with a snotty tissue. Yucky! We couldn´t party too late as we had a big day coming up. We´d signed up with Freebikes to cycle the "Death Road". That night I started feeling a bit sick with nerves as I´m kinda clumsy and don´t have a good track record with bikes. We got up early and were too tired to be scared, but as the minibus took us up to the summit, "La Cumbre", at 4700m above sea level, we were all eerily quiet. In our group were 6 Swiss and us. We had 2 guides and the ... read more

There are a few times when our days are so amazing that we feel that they deserve a blog entry all of their own and this was one of those days.... We had both been looking forward to another highlight of our trip since leaving the UK.. the mountain biking down the Worlds Most Dangerous Road. Sophie had seen this road on an email many years ago and at that time had never dreamt she'd ever see it let alone get to bike down it! For both of us this trip was very different so we have decided to write a separate account of our experiences. As some of you will know Sophie and Dale are poles apart when it comes to sport so with one at the back and one at the front things were ... read more
