Road of death Nearly beat us..... On our spare day in La Paz, we ride out to Coroico, this time we had Cory (the NZ guy that lives in Bolivia) with us. During our spare time he was busy with Robin, trying to organize the purchase of another BMW 800 GS from the local BMW dealer, so they could rip the clutch out of it and get on the road again. We all left the hotel, about 11.00am, as Robin, Baz , Wim, Paul and Cory had gone down to the BMW dealer with a show of BMW Loyalty. Now with Diane on the back of Paul’s moto, and Cory, Robin and me in the now shockless truck, and made our way out of the maze, that La Paz is. The paved road, and the scenic ... read more

Imagine cuddling baby monkeys all day... I could wistfully write about our 10 days volunteering at the animal refuge, La Senda Verde (LSV) for hours. It was a beautiful, unique experience that we are sure we could never replicate. I’ll try to keep it brief! After meeting an Irish guy in La Paz’s Wild Rover hostel, we were convinced that LSV would be a great thing to do. Not only would we be in a lush rainforest setting but we’d get to see amazing animals, and of course volunteer for a good cause. A little bit about the place. Just over eight years old, LSV was created by Vicki and Marcelo with just one old female Spider Monkey – Maruka or ‘Grandma’ as she is affectionately known because of her old grumpy face and huge big ... read more

Day 67-90 11th November-4th December This is going to be a hard one, I’m not sure Ellory and I will ever be able to fully explain what an amazing experience this was. On the morning of the 11th, we got a taxi to Villa Fatima where we could get a bus to Coroico, the town near La Senda Verde. It was a bit interesting when we got there! Very chaotic and confusing and it took us a while to find the Totai bus company where we could get our bus. We managed it eventually and booked 2 seats for the 1.30pm bus. The bus ride down was fun, we were all squashed into a little mini bus for 3 hours with our stuff on the roof! There are 2 roads down to Coroico, ‘The World’s Most ... read more

The Choro trek is a three day hike from La Cumbre just outside La Paz to some tiny little town near Coroico. You can do it as a tour, but since Elina and Barry had all the camping equipment, we did it ourselves. Barry couldn´t come as he had to work, so it was just Elina and me. We set off with two chaps from our hostel who were also doing the hike. The hike starts off with a steep ascent to something like 4900. I might have just made that up as I really can´t remember and I´ve sent the bumpf home. Anyway, it was super high and quite a challenge at altitude with a heavy pack. We stopped at the pass to catch our breath and witnessed a pack of llamas coming up the ... read more

Hi from La Paz. We left Uyuni, around 9.am as we had a lot of mucking around with the sale of fuel to foreigners, of which category we fit into, after using our contacts, we managed at least to fill the truck with local priced fuel. The Road from Uyuni to Oruro, has only marginally been improved since we were here 12 months ago. One of the wet land areas that they were building a concrete ford last year was still not finished, even though there were large gangs of workers there. Further up there was a deviation in place, as they are building and sealing a large section of this road, but again, we could see no improvement from 12 months ago. And what a mission this ‘Diversio’ turned out to be, as the sand ... read more

South America » Bolivia » La Paz Department » Coroico November 10th 2009

We decided to temp fate and try out our biking skills down the ¨World´s Deadliest Road¨! We were driven up to the top of a mountain at La Cumbre some 4,500 meters up, and began an almost 70 kilometer ride down to 1,100 meters on one heck of a road. They call it the death road because more than 150 people die on it each year. Mostly in motor vehicle accidents. As of now, only two bikers have perished off the 1000 ft cliffs this year. Thankfully we were not a statistic. We went with our French friends and had a blast. Our guide told us we were the fastest group he had ever riden with!!!! Thats right!... read more
