Day 282 - Tuesday 8 July Were finally on our way again. We were up at six thirty to make our way down to our mountainbiking. Unfortunately we ended up having to wait an hour for the guides to turn up, thats another hour I could have had in bed and would have been most appreciated. We finally got underway about 8am and the minibus drove us up the hill and out of La Paz to the start. Because they'd cancelled on us yesterday we've got a free upgrade to the most expensive bikes they have with better suspension and gears. I suppose that almost makes up for losing a day. Apart from 2 Germans were doing the trip with a huge group of Brazilains who I think are on their university holidays. They're so noisy ... read more

Here are a couple of photos of the death road for you (not really necessary for me to write lots about it)- wasn´t particularly scary but it was good fun. Sore bum afterwards though!! As you can see the weather wasn´t that great so I haven´t got any fantastic photos of the view - plus my camera didn´t take too kindly to the wet weather and decided to die half way round (it´s fine now though!). Should hopefully get some better photos at some point. Have added some more photos to other blog entries if you´re interested........ read more

Wiele biur turystycznych w La Paz organizuje zjazd rowerami najniebezpieczniejsza droga swiata (podobno). Z calym sprzetem bus dowozi rowerzystow na wysokosc 4700 metrow. Zjazdza sie do 1200m i trwa to 5h. Many turistic offices in La Paz organize rally by bike by the most dangerous road in the world. With all the equipment we were taken to the ... read more

So i was knackered when i got up and i grabbed my stuff and made as much noise as possible as i was well pissed off from my lack of sleep, i headed down to the cafe and sat with Andre a swedish guy and two aussies and we ordered breakkie and we all had omlette sandwiches. After a little while Matt our guide and several other guides turned up and checked people off and assigned them to a group, we had a run down of the day and what bus we would be on. The bus'swere fairly decent compared to what rthe other companys offered as you could see the other companys on the road up to the start point of the trip. The was 15 in our group when 4 others eventually turned up ... read more

There are two ways to get to Coroico. You can catch the bus. or you can go by bike. Whilst the former is definitely cheaper, and arguably safer, the latter is a lot more fun. This is the 'Death Road', so called because it used to be the world's most dangerous road. This incredibly narrow dirt and gravel track winds its way down a total of around 3,000 metres down from La Paz to Coroico. Until a few years ago, when a new road was opened, this used to be the main route for all traffic heading in this direction - including buses and trucks, an alarming number of which would end up falling off. Hence its reputation. Nowadays, with most of the traffic going down the new road, the old one is used mainly by ... read more

Much to the probable disappointment and worry of my mother, after climbing Huayna Potosi, i had a renewed sense of adventure which had to be filled in Bolivia. How to keep the adrenaline flowing? Well, when you have reached 6,000m, the only alternative is to go down.....quickly. Enter, the world´s most dangerous road. To the North of La Paz, the high levels of the altiplano drop off rapidly to the low level pampas, continuing into the amazon jungle beyond. On the way out of La Paz, the road climbs up to a point at 4,660m altitude. In this area, you are surrounded by snow capped mountains all around, and the wind and snow blow through like an Aberdonian winter day. From this point, the road drops, quickly, to the low level pampas area of Coroico. Over ... read more

Ok, last time I said we were going to try and book the boke ride again. What a nightmare trying to book this bike ride. I will keep the story short. Even though we tried our hardest none of the agencies could guarantee we could get home in time for the cheap bus to Uyuni which we were desperate to get on. So, we would have to go on the expensive one if we did the bike ride or stay in La Paz one more night which we really didnt want to do. Then when we agreed to get the more expensive bus we found out that it was full. We eventually agreed to stay one more night and do the bike ride. I felt so guilty because Nik wasnt even keen on the bike ride ... read more

Hello We are just recovering from our lengthy walk this morning to the waterfalls that took us 4 hours in the boiling heat. We decided to get up early to try and beat the midday sun as best we could so made it down for breakfast today. We ate lots and then decided to steal two rolls with ham and some cake for our picnic lunch, luckily I was wearing my wolly jumper with a large front pocket so the rolls fitted in just perfectly! The start of the walk was uphill and I didn´t think I would make it even after the fisrt 10 minutes!! However we then discovered the correct path and things became a bit easier and flatter. The whole walk was along the side of the hills with brilliant views over the ... read more
