We've been back for around two months now and it seems as if less has happened here than happened in the average week in South America. We're in Ians' top room with a few beers, ready to engage in our final semi productive nostalgia trip. The last week and a bit was planned as a chance to relax, after the stressful 2 and a half month holiday we'd been on. The stresses that travellers usually moan about - catching busses, missing busses, making checkout times etc were still with us, but we gave sightseeing and company stuff a miss. We would be going down the worlds most dangerous road for the third time, but the first time in the dark, and for the first time with chickens on the bus with us. We persuaded the driver ... read more

This weekend we went jungle! We dropped 2000m (driving down the Death Road once again) and discovered the meaning of humidity... it was very warm. We enjoyed being around bush, water, insects and birds again. Our first event for the weekend was a bush walk along an Inca trail to a waterfall... apparently not a simple task in Bolivia. We had two people at the front with machetes hacking their way through the vegetation (which apparently grows back within a couple of days). All that you could see of past Inca activity was a few rocks placed randomly on the path. I managed to stand on what I thought was the path and fall down the bank... a friend of ours thought I was going to die. But no... I quickly came across a tree on ... read more

Well, this entry is difficult to write because of the controversial topic that it contains. If you know anything about Bolivia, you may know that the World's Most Dangerous Highway is located here and it is actually quite close to La Paz. At the other end of the highway is a spectacular little town called Coroico, which is a weekend getaway for many Paceños (what people from La Paz are referred to as). I will give a brief description of why this is considered to be the world´s most dangerous highway. The highway is unpaved, mostly single lane (ie. very narrow), contains no guard rails and there definitely exists no shoulder. Going off the road and death are pretty much synonymous in the case of this road. On average, 26 vehicles a year meet their fate ... read more

So, as you may have already guessed, its confession time about our sunny little jaunt into Coroico. The bicycle ride that I mentioned in the previous entry was actually a bicycle ride down The World's Most Dangerous Road (no exaggeration, it was recently voted that again in a British magazine). The road is the main route between La Paz and Brazil so it gets pretty busy with trucks and buses and its actually only big enough for one car in most places. Last week a bus went over the side and 50 people died and our friend Kat told us when she did it about 2 weeks ago one of the cyclists fell off the side and broke her nose and ankle. Insane? Yes I thought we were when we started to consider it. We set ... read more

After a couple of days resting in La Paz, experiencing the craziness of the street markets where you can buy anything from dried llama foetuses to a new toilet, we bit the bullet and signed up for the infamous downhill mountain biking experience along the world´s most dangerous road. Everybody we´ve met who has the t-shirt recommended Gravity Assisted in La Paz as the company to go with. Excellent bikes and the best guides. As well as a great safety record. They certainly were a splendid organisation. We went for the full package. Top notch full-suspension Kona bikes, protective clothing, goggles, etc. But nothing quite prepared us for the madness of the ride - over 60 km downhill almost all the way. We started out at 4,700 mts and descended to 1,600 mts - from snow ... read more

My last entry mentioned that we were planning a mountain biking trip from La Paz. What I failed to mention was that the route would venture down the so-called "World´s Most Dangerous Road". Yes, there is some validity to that well earned title a we heard that 3 vehicles had gone off the cliff in the last week. And if I´m so afraid of heights why would I even consider this trip? For one, I feel less fear when I'm in control, for another, I enjoy a good a good thrill now and then, and finally, we chose the safest tour operator on the route (one guide per seven riders;our group of 16 had 3 guides) The route is 40 miles of which the first 10 are paved and the balance is dusty gravel, made even ... read more

I really believe that one of the best ways of making friends is by actively doing the things you enjoy. I had read about a three day trek from the mountains near La Paz to the forested Yungas in the valleys below. I made various enquiries at agencies in La Paz but at first I was having trouble finding anyone else to trek with. Then the agent at my hotel heard of another girl looking to do the trek and took me across the road to another agency. In fact there were two more ´chicas´waiting and we instantly found a common goal. The agent spoke good English and offered us a reasonable deal for guide, tents and sleeping bags plus a porter. So early on a Monday morning Shiobaun (Ireland), Helena (Sweden), myself and a late ... read more

After completing the "World´s most dangerous road" ride we felt we´d spend a day chilling in Coroico, firstly because of lot of the rest of the tour group were and we wanted to have a few drinks with them but also because we were so terrified about making the bus journey back up the road we´d just cycled down. Hotel Esmerelda is perched on a cliffside, has spectacular views of the Yungas valley and is also the proud owner of a swimming pool and sauna - both Laura and I felt we deserved a bit of luxury after over a month of tepid showers (on the whole), basic breakfasts (jam and bread) and cramped rooms. As it turned out, our extra investment in this particular hotel didn´t particularly pay-off since we got one of the shabbier ... read more
