Yesterday we got the bus form Rurrenabaque to Yolossa, on the way to Corrorico. Yolossa is only about half an hour form Corrorico and when we booked our tickets we were assured that we would be able to get another bus or a taxi for the last part of the journey. Well, we arrived at 2.30am instead of midnight, tired and grouchy, especially as one of Jamies flip flops had fallen from where it was wedged down the side of the seat and disappeared off down the bus, especially unhelpful as they are his last remaining shoes! Unsuprisingly there were no taxis or busses anywhere to be seen. We walked for a little way in each direction, and knowcked on the door of a very closed hostel, then decided that the only choice was to wait ... read more

Well, with several days more in Coroica, things started off slowly. We found an awesome place to stay (which I mentioned in the previous blog) but for quite some time we just sat around talking about what to do with our remaining 4 days before dying on our return back up death road. Statistically one person dies on the road every four days, so we tried to play the odds and head back in daylight, not on the weekend, and in a small bus not a large one (if you saw the road caving away under a small bus you´d understand). Regardless of all that, I´m done talking about death road, but certainly not done thinking about it. Last Saturday we went to the ranch in town, got some horses, road to the cocaine fields, visited ... read more

Well we left La Paz yesterday, we took a quick bus out of town to the place where we can get microbuses (basically a van) to the town of Coroico. Coroico is not has high elevation wise as La Paz, which was nice, but to get there one heads north east through the mountains. The trip started off pleasant enough, we climbed upward, I had a bit of a buggered stomache so I took a gravol. We saw llama´s and farms and even some snow! After awhile we started back down, into the jungle, clouds and rain and slippery mountain roads. Now, I saw pictures of this "highway" before leaving, it´s actually a popular mountain biking excursion, and judging from the shots I saw in La Paz, it looked like a narrow, wet, deadly road through ... read more

We are starting to wonder when our luck is going to change! We are currently sat at La Paz airport as our flight to Rurrenabaque has been delayed indefinately due to heavy rain and Rurrenabaque only having a grass runway! We were meant to fly at 7.15am, it is now 1.40pm and we have been told they will give us an update at 4pm. We also had to get up at 5am to get the early flight so we would have the full day in Rurrenabaque so we are quite tired. Ironically we decided to fly to save time! Well enough of my grumlings! After our return from our visit to see Aydi we went to an internet cafe to catch up on what was happening with Andy´s bank account and to see when we would ... read more

The Cordillera Real is a mountain range that sits between the high lands and the jungles of Bolivia. It is only 40 km across but drops from 6000 m to nearly sea level in the jungles. We decided to take one of the famous treks here known as “El Choro” trek. Again we just packed our bags and off we go. No more donkeys, guides and cooks. We started off at 4900 m in a near white out blizzard and walked a very old Inca route that dropped down to 1300 m near the jungle. Most interesting point about this trek is some great unrestored ruins and Inca steps. The change in weather from the altitude difference also left something to the imagination. Really pretty walk but very hard as a lot of the down was ... read more

Welcome to Bolivia! Having fully recovered from my biking accident a while back, I decided it was time to ´get back in the saddle´as they say. And what better way to get back into the world of two wheels than by a nice confidence building peddle. And what more terrifying way to relive past glories than by powering down the WORLD´S MOST DANGEROUS ROAD (as dubbed by the Inter-American Development Bank in 1995. Totally raving. Its a 60km descent, starting at a freezing 4,700m/15,400 feet. The first 20km is on a relatively tame tarmac road, giving you a chance to get used to the equipment, which to be fair was the best bike I have ever sat on. (Sorry, Rich is getting upset, the second best bike.) Anyhows, after cruising through a drug check point, past ... read more

Ahoj.... je rano 7:30 a my stojime pred cestovkou ktorej uz nazov napoveda ze sa nejedna o hocaky vylet.....Dostavame helmu, rukavice, nohavice, vestu a horsky bycikel, ktory sa nalozi na strechu auta ktore nas vyvezie hore nad La Paz do vysky 4630 m.n.m. kde nasa cesta 65 km dlha cesta zacina. Este posledna kontrola horskeho bycikla a ide sa dolu do dzungle..... Zaciatok cesty je asi 30 km po asfaltke ktora dalej prechadza do nespevnenej prasnej cesty miestami len 2 m sirokej.....cesta je lemovana krizmi ktore oznacuju miesta kde sa zrutil dolu autobus..... Cestou prechadzame cez 2 vojenske kontroly ktore si zapisuju nase cisla pasov. V oblasti s tak velkou produkciou koky nas to vobec neprekvapuje. Ako postupne klesa nadmorska vyska, otepluje sa a my postupne zhadzujeme veci do auta ktore ide za nami....cim ideme nizsie ... read more

oh, if you are getting one of these emails for the first time, it means i met you traveling and i finally found your email. hope your travels are going smoothly. you can check out some of the other blogs of mine, chances are there is a picture or two of you there. I left La Paz on Saturday (I think) and headed for Coroico. On the way I met Austin (powers) from Norway, now he travels the right way - see the pictures and you will find out what i mean. Coroico is a little Eden. Warm, green and at an elevation of 1600 meters (about 5000 feet) is a relief from la paz. the first night stayed in a hostal run by a french couple, food was good, the beds weren't. So Austin and ... read more

Phew. I made it down the world´s most dangerous road. I enjoyed it a big lot, and wasn´t nearly as afraid as I was afraid I would be. Still have to drive back up to La Paz though... I was lucky. Two days ago, it rained and so the road wasn´t nearly as dusty as it can be. I´ve taken some photos which I shall eventually display. We´re looking for something to do tomorrow night for fun, and Alice and Chris are off to the jungle on Monday morning. (I don´t know what I´m doing yet. Salt flats if I can sort it out.) Nightclub suggestions, people who´ve been? Not the cinema. Did that yesterday - it was as cold as one of those overnight bus journeys. Saw Batman. It wasn´t bad, actually.... read more

This weekend we went to Coroico, a small town 50 miles from the (notional) capital of Bolivia, La Paz. Coroico is famous for two things, being a nice chilled out place to stay on top of a hill with fantastic views all around, and for the “most dangerous road in the world”. So named because it is a thin dirt track clinging to the side of precipitous cliffs with no satefy barriers and a lot of impatient heavy large overcrowded traffic... and a lot of this traffic falls off the side. However the road is the only way yo Coroico while they build a fancy new two lane blacktop along a safer mountain. This was acutually well in progress last time we travelled the road in 1997, and doesnt seem to have opened yet, although reports ... read more
