Argentinien - Buenos Aires in den NW, nach Salta und Jujuy, November 2019 Copyright by Bernhard SONNLEITNER Montag, 11. November 2019 Der 11.

Packing for this trip has been a bit of a challenge as we need shoes for a cruise, clothes for the Polar region as well as not much for Thailand so we both have larger than normal suitcases. We are hoping the weather is favourable as we sail the Drake Passage to Antarctica and back again. This evening we fly to Buenos Aires arriving 4 hours before we leave, i.e. 4pm on Sunday. We have a few days to look around before boarding the ship, Zaandam on the 18th. The temperature in the Falkland Islands, our second port of call, is about 8 degrees C. We are there on the 24th. Christmas day begins 7 continuous days at sea 3 of which will be sailing around the Antarctic ice looking at icebergs, penguins, whales and sealions. ... read more

It is rumoured that Kevin and I drink large quantities of Malbec when we are on holiday. We have been led to believe that you all believe this. It is not true. The photos that Kevin posts are posed and enhanced by Photoshop to reinforce this myth. After all, to date we have but visited only about 8 to 10 wineries, a trivial number. It is also not true that we did, as often as possible, hire bicycles and taxis so that we could drink unconstrained. Of course, the main reason for our winery visits was to gain a deep understanding of horticultural methods in desert climes. We learned a great deal about vine propagation and controlled irrigation. All I can remember is that the very large roadside irrigation channels are quite a hazard to the ... read more

So here I am with KP again. One might think that to be a liability but in all charity I gain from his presence. So where have we been and what have we done? Lots. In Buenos Aries we did the usual. (We ate big chunks of steak and drank copious amounts of malbec.) Evenings at jazz clubs and milongas and daily wanderings.(My leg hurts) Then to Mendoza where the nonsense began. Just imagine sitting on the back of a horse for three days among thorny dastardly rose shrubs having your legs shredded just for fun. The terrain in the foothills of the Andes was rugged, the horses stubborn but sure footed. We encountered magnificent views up into the peaks and down across the desert plain. I felt alive and were it not for having to ... read more

Dear Friends and Family, After travelling 28 hours from door to door, Ann, Riley and I arrive in Buenos Aires, Argentina. We stopped in Toronto to change planes and then in Santiago just to walk in a big circle and get back on the same plane. We used Uber to get from the airport to the Airbnb and found it to be really reliable and cheap to get around in Argentina and later Chile. We were staying in the Palermo district that boasts lots of coffee shops, restaurants and grocery shops. For my birthday, we did a big walking tour of Buenos Aires. We started in the Caminito at the colourful buildings and market stalls. We walked north to La Bombonera (home to the Boca Juniors), the playground at the Parque Flora Native, San Telmo, Plaza ... read more

South America » Argentina » Mendoza December 5th 2019

After our Estancia experience we are back in the hotel Internacional, Mendoza for a couple of nights, and although very central, the room is small.  You cant swing a cat, small. So, it's  time to find something different and also to pick up a car and allow us to  really explore the area. But before leaving Mendoza, we book a river rafting trip near Lake Potrerillos, about 70 km away from the city. With pickup, a very cheap 24 USD and that includes zip lining which actually turns out to be a little dissapointing. But, the rafting is fun, even though Malcolm cannot partake because of a leg issue, he does spend his day sitting by the side of the river, soaking up Quilmes (beer) and chatting to a bunch of likely lads from Liverpool. In ... read more

Nov 11 thru 20 My traveling companion is my good friend Malcolm from Fiji and we leave for our second trip to Argentina, followed by a possible incursion into Bolivia (we quickly had to dump this thought because of political unrest in Bolivia following the ouster of Evo Morales) Again, we pick San Telmo as our base for our five nights in Buenos Aires. We had stayed in hotel for one night before leaving the last trip, hotel Bohemia on Peru. Very central and within easy walking distance to everything. As the Argentina economy is in the doldrums, we are now receiving 60 pesos to the US dollar instead of our 15 to the $ in 2016. Taxis are cheap, hotels and food are reasonable and of course imported clothes, shoes etc. More expensive. ... read more

R: The next morning it was time so say our goodbyes and head off. I was booked on a flight from El Calafate airport in the early afternoon which required an early start. The tour company had told me that the could take me to the airport but it wouldn't be till later in the day, so I had booked my own minibus transfer. I was considering the public bus but my prior experience with Argentinian public transport told me that I didn't want to leave this to chance. I was sat in the kitchen with some of the other people from the tour, when suddenly the driver showed up early! Without saying full goodbyes to all, I was whisked away. The minibus went round and around the town picking up people before making the 3 ... read more

R: It feels a bit odd to be writing this during the coronavirus lockdown, but it makes me glad that I've been able to do this trip, and to think about all the things I may be able to do after it all ends. Anyway. This was the big one - the last full day of the organised part of the trip. This was the longest walk of the trip - 20km in total over steep ground in places - some of us had been looking forward to it, some had been dreading it. We had been told the night before to go and find sustenance for the day which I should really have done the day before, but I was on a long walk, so I didn't get time! I headed to a small supermarket ... read more

Another full day in Buenos Aires. We are getting pretty good at navigating our way around using the subway system. It really is much better than traveling the city streets because of the volume of cars and buses whipping around. Our first destination was the Plaza de Mayo. It is located at the center of Buenos Aires And is the main square. It is a commemoration of the May Revolution on 1810, the first steps towards Argentina's independence from Spain in 1816. Seats of Government are located around the Plaza. At the center of the Plaza if the May Pyramid which was constructed to commemorate independence from Spain. We were able to see the changing of the guard at the Cabildo. The building was the seat of power during the time Argentina was colonized by Spain. ... read more
