The world seemed an even bigger place in 1978. The World Cup party that had once rolled down Linthorpe Road in Middlesbrough in 1966 was in full swing in Buenos Aires. I watched the television, awe inspired, as a schoolboy. What a place to watch your football. We knew little of the politics of the military junta at the time. Frankly if we had, I doubt we would have cared one iota. I was watching the sky filled with the trademark paper falling down from the stands and a brand of football that we didn't encounter on the playing fields at home. In amongst the festival of football, a young urchin was juggling footballs for the TV crews. The next superstar? We didn't know. Diego Armando Maradona. It turns out we would hear a lot more ... read more

I wrote this back in 2010. Perhaps it is time to re-visit the ABCs?? Some of you may not have been on my email list back then. Gerry A is for Autobahn, a truly exciting and frightful experience the first time on the German superhighways. A could also be for Amsterdam, the wildest city in the world, where anything and anybody can be bought and sold. Of course, Amazonia could outshine anyplace on earth for its riches of forest, animals, plant life, and pure adventure. Don't forget the lovely and peaceful Algarve, on the Atlantic coast of Portugal, a wonderland of golf, good food, wine, and nice people. I almost forgot the magnificent ruins o... read more

Wednesday 4 March, 2020 - Buenos Aires Our 12.40pm flight was delayed back to 2.45pm, which was inconvenient to say the least because it meant we missed our Air Canada connection in Santiago. We were rerouted to a flight 2hrs later but we had to scramble with communications to our driver in Buenos Aires, as well as our Airbnb host. The flight itself was completely packed and Dwayne was bumped out of his aisle seat into the middle, so that was not fun. Same happened on our Latam connection. On a positive note, we flew over the South Island of NZ and had a bird’s eye view of the southern alps, from Mt Cook to Milford Sound. Very pretty. Finally arrived in BA at our apartment at 7pm, did the handover and made our way out ... read more

Friday 14thFebruary 2020 Chris had planned a couple of walking tours, but after yesterday’s walking tour failure and as Buenos Aires is such a large sprawling City, we decided to buy a 48hr hop on, hop off bus ticket (@ 45 US $ pp). Left the ship just after 8.00am and caught the shuttle to the Port Gates, got our tickets for the Big Bus and then had to wait 10 mins to get a yellow bus company shuttle bus to the Bus Stop for the yellow HOHO bus. All seemed very complicated!! Caught the bus at red stop 14 and were treated to some of the sights of Buenos Aires! It is full of trees, statues, churches, clock towers, fountains, parks and gardens as well as old grand French and Italian style palaces and buildings ... read more

Buenos Aires, Montevideo & the Falklands 28 January–7 February 2020 There are 3 blogs coming in quick succession as we did not have good enough wifi while travelling. The penguins on the Falklands are at the end of the pictures so click through all pages to see them. Arriving in B. Aires three days before we were due to embark on the Zaandam for our cruise down to Antarctica gave us plenty of time to visit the city. After purchasing our Subte card for the underground we set off to visit the Eva Peron museum and the Recoleta cemetery. It may seem unusual to visit a cemetery but Recoleta is the top tourist attraction in B A and city residents are very proud of it. The cemetery is fascinating, a true city of the dead, streets ... read more

Det ... read more

Turen skulle tatt tre timer, men tok over fem.
