NOTE: Oh no, the laptop is dead!! This means that photos cannot be uploaded to travelblog.org. Bernie has decided that my words alone without his photos will bore our followers so there are not going to be any more blogs until we are home (4th of April) and Bernie can repair the laptop or load our photos from the desktop ... whatever it takes?! All photos are backed up so no photos are lost, they are just temporarily inaccessible.?T Between 7.00am and 9.00am this morning we were cruising the Beagle Channel and Glacier Alley. Bernie was out on the bow photographing while I tried to see what I could from our stateroom. The weather was still fairly bleak so maybe I was better off viewing from the comfort of our cabin rather than risking being blown ... read more

Before I start apologies for the delay in posting these blogs. We ended up on an old-fashioned holiday - no internet or phone. We are now home but I have decided to record them anyway. After leaving Buenos Aires we flew to Ushaia , the southernmost town in South America, nicknamed the "end of the world". It is the gateway to Antarctica for cruises. After being collected at the airport we were given a quick overview of the town and then left to explore on our own and have lunch. The weather changed from cool and sunny to cold to wet to snow!! Le Lyrial is a Ponant boat and is only 8 months old. We are on a Scenic tour and are joining many others who have come either directly from Australia or have been ... read more

Wednesday 3rd February, 2016. Ushuaia, Tierra del Fuego, Patagonia, Argentina Ushuaia is a resort town on Argentina's part of the Tierra del Fuego archipelago (the other part belonging to Chile) which are the islands off the southernmost tip of South America and known as the "End of the World". Ushuaia is the capital of Tierra del Fuego and is situated on a wide bay on the southern coast of Isla Grande de Tierra del Fuego. It is also considered to be the southernmost city in the world, located 35000 km south of Buenos Aires and just 1000 north of Antarctica. This windswept town is perched on a steep hill surrounded by the Martial Mountains behind and the Beagle Channel in front. It is the gateway to Antarctica with many cruises leaving from here to travel to ... read more

As I stare out the window on board a flight to Buenos Aires, I reflect upon my last month spent travelling around Patagonia (Chile and Argentina). I conclude it's undoubtedly the most beautiful place/ region on earth that I've ever witnessed. From the Chilean fjords to Tierra del Fuego, beyond which lies only Antarctica, to Torres del Paine and Los Glaciares national parks, the scenery is jaw-dropping at every turn. Mountains, glaciers, emerald lakes and pure wilderness all feature in Patagonia's landscapes. For this part of my trip, I decide to try overlanding with adventure travel company Dragoman, traversing a colossal 4,250 kilometres in just over 3 weeks on their purpose built expedition vehicle. This enables us to get off the beaten track quite often, in other words, go camping and hiking in some of the ... read more

We arrived in Puerto Natales in good spirits after we managed to book all the buses and campsites that we needed to in order to do the W Trek in Torres del Paine, as well to get down to Ushuaia. We found our hostel and things got even better – it was friendly, people were nice and it was clean. They sorted us out with a tent and stove for camping on The W. We then took a trip to a supermarket with the world’s largest queues to stock up on enough food for 4 days of pretty intense walking. After 45 minutes in the queue (no exaggeration) we left with a shed load of food that was going to weigh our bags down. Having packed our big bags ready for the trek the night before, ... read more

... read more

Sailing with Darwin and Fitz Roy Our three days at the 'fin de mundo' (end of the world as they like to call it here) have been a nice finish to the trip. Yesterday we boarded a sailboat and sailed in the Beagle Channel, where Fitz Roy captained the ship (the Beagle) that carried Darwin on his voyage of discovery. We sailed first to an island that held a large cormorant colony and then on to another one covered with sea lions. From there we motored over to "Isla H"; which, given the Spanish language, I believe is pronounced "Isla ...." (OK, Spanish teacher joke, the H is often not pronounced). We walked the island, spending time observing Black Cormorants on their nests and climbing to the top where the light house is. We had a ... read more

Buenos Aires to Ushuaia and Fin del Mundo We finally made it from the top to the bottom of the world Leaving Buenos Aires we made our run south with some big riding days, as this was another holiday weekend many hotels were booked up and or wouldn't accept a one night booking so we had to change our direction a bit but not enough to go out of our way. Our biggest day of our adventure was a 730km ride from Bahia Blanca to Trelew in Argentina, I was so thankful for my airest and sheepskin that day that's for sure. Costs have gone up quite a lot here in Argentina since we were here last year with fuel getting close to NZ prices along with our food costs. It was good to be back ... read more

To The End of the World After one night in Punta Arenas we gathered up a rental car and headed for Ushuaia, our last stop on the tour. Ushuaia is the farthest south city in the world, on the Beagle Channel where Darwin and Fitz Roy sailed. The trip from Punta Arenas to Ushuaia covered 700 km to the southern most point of Terra del Fuego, and took around 13 hours. How does it take 13 hours to cover about 420 miles? Well, you have to stop in Penguinia Rey to see a colony of king penguins, get through two boarder crossings, take a ferry across the Magellan Strait, and cover about 100 miles of gravel road! The landscape was stunning, going from miles and miles of flat Patagonian pampas as far as you could see ... read more

THE THEMATIC GALLERY (Interactive Prison Museum) Ushuaia, Argentina Aug 20th Hernan, my host for my stay in Ushuaia, drove past the Thematic Gallery on my first full day in Ushuaia. I was intrigued by the prisoners scaling the walls of the old prison. He tried to explain what it was, finally saying that it was a museum. The name of the museum didn’t inspire me so I didn’t really think I would venture inside but the outside of the edifice made for some interesting photos. One morning I set out on foot to walk to the downtown area. Although only 4.6 km, it took about two hours because of snow and ice and part of the way there was no path. The landscape took my breath away. I had decided to go to a travel agent ... read more
