December 8th, Sunday Glacier Alley and Ushuaia, Argentinaon the island of Terra del Fuego. Surprisingly clear blue skies and the water so calm it looks like glass. From Puerto Arenas the ship sailed via the Strait of Magellan around and to the huge island of Tierra del Fuego—part belonging to Chile and the other half to Argentina. Along the way, we passed what has been named Glacier Alley--this area is covered by ice sheets and glaciers. We spent the morning sitting in the Crow’s Nest watching one glacier after another pass by the window. The treeless, snow-covered mountain chains, one peak after another, have a glacier sitting in each valley between the mountain ridges. About 11:30 we docked at the city of Ushuaia, Argentina. This is the largest community close to Antarctica and is ... read more

You can never have enough petrol - das hatte Kevin schon seit Wochen gesagt, hier stellte sich heraus, wie recht er hatte.

Fand endlich was. ... read more

Endlich ... read more

Wednesday 27th November (Odyssey Day 19) We left Torres del Paine today after a windy night. It was the only bad weathered night we have had in this area. We headed back to Puerto Natales and spent 1 ½ hours there while Emma and Simon went grocery shopping & Hannah returned her hired trekking poles. In the end, she was the only one who hired anything for the W trek, everyone else either bought tents or stayed in the pre-set campsites. Ellie and I went and found a café where we could have another steak sandwich. They are really good here and we weren’t the only ones to find our way there. From there we headed south again. We are headed for Ushuaia but will need one bushcamp first. We managed to cross the Straight of ... read more

Friday 29th November (Odyssey Day 21) We were shuttled into town at 0830 this morning by Simon and the first thing everyone did was organise a trip out on the Beagle Channel for the afternoon or tomorrow. I really wanted to do it today so I could have a relaxing day tomorrow. The weather was beautiful but it can change rather quickly here. A few managed to get on to a sailing boat but there were only a few places left. Joanna and I booked onto a short 2 ½ hour catamaran cruise around a few of the small islands on the channel. It didn’t leave until 1530 though so we had a few hours to spare. The one place in Ushuaia that I really wanted to visit was the old prison, which had been turned ... read more

Managed to book flights WELL in advance and avoided a monster bus journey from BA to Ushuaia - the flight was still around 6 hours down the continent which is crazy when you think about the fact it takes around 6-7 hours to fly to DUBAI from the UK. We travelled for that long down the same country! Ushuaia City is classed at the ´end of the world city´as it is only 1000km to antartica (meaning it was quite cold down there!), and if you had the funds (around $5000 US for a 10 day trip) it takes around two days of sailing to reach the south pole. Ushaia is dwarfed by the towering Andes which are classed as both from the Argentinian and Chilian sides of the continent. They are all snowed peaked and the ... read more

We arrived in Ushuaia on 8th April 2013 after 3 flights. Puerto Madryn to El Calafate, El Calafate to Rio Gallegos, Rio Gallegos to Ushuaia. When we decided to come to Argentina I always thought that Ushuaia would be a highlight of the journey and it hasn´t disapointed. Sitting on The Beagle Channel and surrounded by mountains you just have to step outside to see some of the most amazing scenery. This is where the Andes meet the sea, the most southerly town in the world, many expeditions to antartica leave from here. Charles Darwin came here aboard The Beagle on his famous journey around the world making his study of the natural world, back then it would have been only inhabited by the native Yamana (almost wiped out by British missionaries shortly after). The Beagle ... read more
