Ate breakfast which only provided one cup of coffee. As we had found a really nice coffee shop previously which handed out a glass of soda water and a sample piece of cake, we decided to rush there before getting on the bus for 9.30 am. It was our turn to cook lunch, dinner and breakfast the following day together with two other group members. The plan had been to shop with the equivalent of £70 from the kitty at a couple of local shops two hours' drive away to ensure that we could get to the shops before everything closed for siesta between 1.00 and 5.00 pm. However, it appeared that whoever was supposed to put the padlock keys in their rightful place didn't do so and we, therefore, had to stop at a local ... read more

We both slept really well as the bed was comfortable and went into breakfast for 8.00 am. A glass of orange squash, a cup of coffee and a mini Danish-type pastry and a triangular thing that was a little like a scone with butter and jam... We walked towards the main square as we needed to change the little Chilean currency we had into Argentinian pesos. We stopped at a coffee shop (as only one cup of coffee at breakfast in the morning is insufficient). We each had a really nice latte which was brought with a big glass of soda water and a sample piece of cake. There were really long queues outside every bank and we walked into one that changed foreign currency and asked why all these people were queueing. Apparently, they all ... read more

Put the alarm on for 5.55 am as we were due to have all the luggage back on the bus by 6.45 am and we knew it would take forever to stuff our sleeping mats, sleeping bags and sleeping liners back into their respective bags and pack away the tent with just torchlight to guide us! We were late leaving as other people didn't quite manage to get their acts together and drove away from the campsite by about 7.15. Arrived back at the Chilean border at 7.30 am and ate breakfast on the bus while waiting for the border to open at 8.00. We needed to be there early to get there before hordes of other people as the queues move so slowly. Unfortunately, as we were late leaving there was a large tour bus ... read more

After a 24 hour bus journey from Iguazu, we finally reached Salta. The bus journey was actually pretty smooth and we all came out of it having had a good sleep and feeling pretty chipper. We made our way to the hostel that we had pre booked and managed to get in our room as soon as we arrived even though it was early in the morning, this meant we could get sorted and head straight out. The hostel itself was a weird one in its layout, and it wasn’t the nicest or biggest dorm room we have ever stayed in, however it would only be for a night, so we couldn’t really complain. The first thing we wanted to do was get on the cable car that takes you a fair height up one of ... read more

I expect some of you have been wondering why I haven’t updated my blog for a while. Well, the honest truth is, I am having far too much fun. However, after receiving several complaints about the lack of updates I have decided to return to sitting at my computer for several hours (despite the glorious sunshine outside), to update you on my progress! So this stage of my journey started out with a 15 hour bus ride over the top of the Andes from Chile to Argentina. The views were outstanding, with flamingos, llamas and rheas all bring spotted along the roadside. Unfortunately, the 6 hour wait at customs was not so thrilling. I ended up with some other foreigners on the bus so luckily there was a nice atmosphere and plenty to talk about. Some ... read more

Salta here we come..... Not quite as hot here even though we are near to the top of west Argentina. Hired a car and head up in the mountains to a maximum height of 4170metres. All of the towns are very Indian sounding with Humahuaca, Purmamarca, Cachi, and it goes on....... Travelled some rugged, terrible roads, mostly on Route 40. Our little 2 wheel drive hire car lasted the distance driving through sand, mud, streams, potholes, winding around the mountains, and not one flat tyre. We saw the most amazing landscapes - lush forests, salt pans (Salinas Grandes) multi colored mountains some covered in cacti, most bare. Climbing up high into the clouds, with your ears popping at great heights. Then on down south of Salta to Cachi and Cafayte (wine country) and had the opportunity ... read more

Thanks to John for his contribution giving an insight to driving a car in Argentina! My reflections on driving in Argentina, double lines only signify that it is unsafe to overtake, so just ignore them and the upcoming bends and crests, like today a guy in a baby Renault overtook me on double lines, upcoming bend with two motorcycle cops watching from a park overlooked by a "Big Jesus on a cross" if Jesus is watching as well as two cops anything goes. Speed maxima signs are only there to inform you that it might be busy in the little town we are about to go through for instance maxima 40 means we may slow down from 110km/hr to 90 or perhaps as low as 80, like again today going through a small town a large ... read more

Do you like Ham and Cheese? Then you have to go to Argentina because it is all you are going to be eating once you´ve gorged on steak! To illustrate, when we arrived at Iguazu and visited the restauraunt (built to cater for the thousands of visitors from all over the world they have every day) there were 8 choices on the menu. With no exaggeration 7 of them were subtly different varieties of ham and cheese sandwiches... very subtle. If you go in a pizzeria your choices are ham, cheese, or ham and cheese, and the Empanadas (little Pasties not unlike mini Calzones) have the same array of choices. Anyway, ham and cheese empanadas in hand we headed over to the falls and were not disappointed. (which given that it had taken us around 19 ... read more

Our first internal flight within South America was to Salta, we booked a cab the night before and told the driver our flight was at 9.30am he therefore recommended we leave the hostel at 6am to allow for traffic and the hour drive to the airport. What we realized that night was that our plane departed from the other airport in Buenos Aires 15 minutes down the road. So having arrived with plenty of time to spare I got the coffees while Em found out what time we could check in, she came back 5 minutes later looking somewhat confused to tell me our flight had been changed and had left at 6am! Fortunately we were able to get on the next flight to Salta departing at 12.20, so only 5 hours to kill. You can ... read more

I woke up to brilliant sunlight streaming in through the window of the coach this morning, having spent twenty three hours in transit from Puerto Iguazú. We left the thick forests of Northern Argentina behind us and had passed through rolling countryside with the mountains in the distance. I had prepared for the trip last night by cooking a couple of hamburgers and fried eggs to keep me going, even though I had been fed at regular intervals by the coach company. Once in the Omnibus terminal in Salta, I fought my way past the hordes of people trying to drum up business for their hostels to get to the information point. El Argentino Hostel had given me very clear instructions for how to get there from the bus terminal, and all I needed to know ... read more
