Inmiddels alweer ... read more

I went to Cachi, a small town west of salta for a couple of days to do some hiking. I stopped on my way at parque nacional cardones ( cardones are a type of cactus that covers much of the land around here). the park only had 4 km of trail so just left the trail and explored on my own. It was intense cause I was hiking at at least 10,000 feet the whole time and fog would roll in quickly and I couldn´t see anything, but I was really carefull about direction and took simple lines. While I was waiting for the bus to cachi from the park I caught a ride from this really nice argetninian couple and we spent the rest of the day together. I met an awsome french guy at ... read more

heh all, Since I last wrote we have had a bit of a crazy few days through Bolivia. Copacanana was pretty nice and a good setting for Lake Titicaca. We visited Isla del sol (island of the sun) on Lake Titicaca for a day trip. This is the birth place of the Inca civilisation I believe. it was very beautiful (a bit like the Aran islands but with dusty land and lots of climbing). We trekked for about 3 1/2 hrs from the south to the north and then got the boat home. Next we took the bus to the crazy city of La Paz. The bus was like a v old uncomfortable steel can of a school bus and 5th gear was unattainable (or so it appeared by the noise). Our ride to La Paz was ... read more

Iguazu was incredible, the force of the falls was truely amazing and the thick jungle surrounding them was awsome. I hiked on a smaller path to this amazing set of small water falls deep in the jungle and they were sacred, tropical awsome, there was a swimming hole underneith the falls, blissfull. After Iguazu I went to Posadas for a few days which is a smaller town further south along the panara river, I met this 60 yearold kickboxer who was fishing. I checked out old mission ruines in San Iguacu, furth west which were left over from when preists came to the jungle and erected comunities and gatheres many of the indiginous people. There were good and bad parts of the situation, the societies were almost eutopian in that everyone had food and water and ... read more

Today we went on an excursion through the Quebrada de Humahuaca (Humahuaca gorge) by following Rio Grande (which is quite dry at this moment) up to the small town of Humahuaca. On the route we first stopped at Purmamarca - a little village famous for the Seven Coulour Hill next to it (Cerro de los Siete Colores). And indeed, the stones of the hill are really colourfull: varous tonalities of red, green, yellow, white, brown... This coloration seems to be result of oxidation of all kinds of minerals present in it: iron for red, copper for green, and so on. We then went on to Tilcara, driving through this valley, also famous in Argentinian history because of many battles against Spanish that took place during the struggle for indipendence. Tilcara has been declared the world heritage ... read more

Today we went for a day excursion to Los Cardones NP and Cachi. The name of the NP comes from the cactus species known as the Cordon, that grows 4 cm per year and can be as high as 10m. In order to get there we had to climb up into the Andes, up to 3350m above the sea level. Unfortunately, it was quite cloudy on our way there so we didn´t get to enjoy the views all that much. But once there we were above the clouds and could admire the incredible scenery of this plateau in the middle of the Andes! After the NP we went on to Cachi, a pictoresque little village where we wandered around the streets for a while. On our return trip the coulds have lifted partly so this time ... read more

Having arrived in Salta safe and sound with no problems at the boarders we were all ready to let loose and party. First things first was to eat as much delicious steak as possible. Arriving by bus late at night, first stop was to dump the bags at the hostel, find the best restaurant and devour some Argentinian steak and red wine...... ahhhh, yum!!!!! It´s quite odd going out for a meal at midnight and falling off your chair when they bring you a steak the size of a plate. I´m not kidding, the size of these steaks was unbelievable! We made the mistake of ordering one each.... wont be doing that again! More Cow? Next morning the boys had the brilliant idea of steak challenge. Only a boy would come up with it, hahaha. We ... read more

Hey all!! Somehow we managed to leave on time the next morning for Potosi and we discovered real bolivian roads - dirt tracks!! It was roasting in the truck but couldn't leave the windows open for the dust so we slept most of the journey. We didn't do much when we reached Potosi either apart from go out for dinner and went to bed early. The next day we were up early to visit the mines. Potosi was made famous by the discover of Cerro Rico (rich hill) a giant silver mine in the hill overlooking the town, in the time of the conquistadores. It funded much of Spains wealth for two centuries and is still producing silver, tin and zinc. Unfortunately methods of mining and conditions haven't changed much for the people who work there. ... read more
