Just thought I´d show the great look I am sporting here in this photo taken at the top of the mountain overlooking Salta. It was after doing a good 24 hours plus from Boliva on buses and having absolutely no more clean clothes apart from the ones I had in the shot. Note the classic honkey tourist positioning with arms and legs dead straight. Also take note of the amazing sock lines in this little puppy.... it´s like I have gone the David Beckman look of wearing white socks with flip flops. ... read more

With the sound of football songs still ringing in Matt's ears we set off on our adventures once more. Next stops Salta and Jujuy. The journey was another loooooong overnighter, but we decided as it was our last on the lovely Argentinian buses, we would go 1st class. The flat bed was smashing and I think we both slept better than we had for days. Our previous bus from Iguazu to Buenos Aires was even more spectacular though. After providing us with plenty of wine with dinner, Chrissie had a glass of champagne, while Matt received about half a pint of whiskey......he slept well that night too! Anyhow, I digress, where were we, oh yeah, Salta and Jujuy.... Salta and Jujuy are in the north of Argentina, where this diverse country provides another entirely new and ... read more

Arriving in Salta around midnight, the night air is warm and heavy and I´m happy that the 300 or so kms south we´ve travelled from Tupiza have made such a difference. Our taxi takes us through the lit-up city park San Martin and I´m reminded of Clapham Old Town and Common. The next morning we walk through the park and it is similar to the common but with scores of jacaranda trees...their bright lilac flowers making it far more beautiful. We take the cablecar up from the park to Cerro San Bernardo where you can look out over the city. It´s obvious we´re in another country...Argentina, it could be love at first sight. Salta´s setting reminds me of Barcelona, surrounded by hills. It´s very European and we feel ready to spoil ourselves for the day. We´ve ... read more

Argentina Part I - by Kate It took skill and strategy to get out of San Pedro, but due to our incredible Spanish and amiable partners in crime, Daniel and Gemma, we aquired four of the remaining five bus tickets to Salta leaving two days later. Quite why there are only three buses a week to Argentina, which were all booked at least two days before departure, seems a mystery. We decided that it was all part of an elaborate plan. With the San Pedran authorities in cahoots with the Bolivians who had pursuaded us that it was much easier to go in to Chile and then cross to Argentina. Our time in San Pedro was spent enjoying the heat as well as the nice cafés and restaurants, although due to the huge increase in price ... read more

And so commences the proper ´travelling´! We strap on our backpacks and board the bus for the 20 hour journey to Salta. The journey begins well - a very nice attendant serves us little snacks and puts on a very loud action film to keep us entertained. The drinks served with dinner help us sleep and we curl up under our blankets and manage to get some sleep. By the time we stop at services at 2 in the morning the novelty has worn off slightly but surprisingly the journey passes quickly and we arrive in Salta on a beautifully sunny morning. We stay at a youth hostel and get lots of information to help us plan our ´road-trip´. We spend the afternoon wandering around the town and sitting in the sun in the main square. ... read more

Still in Salta. Ideally will have left by now but buses only going to Chile a couple times a week. Judith and I are taking "Pullman" to Arica, Chile leaving tomorrow at 6:45am. It´s supposed to take about 24 hours, but travellers I have met along the way say it takes longer because of the border crossing in San Pedro de Atacama (a huge tourist attraction in Chile and starting point for Uyuni, Bolivia)..... So, I guess I will let all of you know about my bus at a later date. Today´s low key. Need to go to the bank and exchange money, did some laundry, going to the post office, etc. tonight, going to somewhere neat, cant remember where or why. but i am sure it will be great. I like Salta, it´s very relaxed--- ... read more

Sometimes called Salta La Linda, Salta the pretty, due to the colonial architeture and beautiful natural scenery. while walking around the city... I was able to see the 18th century Cabildo(former town hall), a beautiful Cathedral, and the central square where the government building arches line the square- from there we walked to the teleferico (gondola) to the top of san bernardo hill. where I was able to view the entire city and valled... Additionally, went to the Guemes montument, for 19th century local military leader General Martín Miguel de ... read more

After a long long bus ride we arrived in Salta at 10pm. Having suprised both myself and Seamus so far by not losing anything, I managed to live up to my reputation and half way into the journey I realised I had left my glasses in the hostel in San Pedro. As we were alreay half way to Argentina there was little I could do until we arrived in Salta. Seamus was more annoyed than I was especially after I confessed I had kicked something under the bed but because I had my big rucksack on could not be bothered to bend down and see what it was....won´t be making that mistake again! Luckily our interpreter as she has since become known was with us and so was able to ring the hostel once we arrived ... read more

Buenos noches. We've been on the road for approximately 9 hours driving around the Querada de Humahuaca. We arrived in San Lorenzo, a little town outside of Salta. Got a room at this place just inside the town called Cabana del Norte. It'll do, as Amy is still sick and we are just plain tired. It has a kitchen so we made the rest of the quinoa we had with a bit of improvisation for taste as they don't even have salt in the so called complete kitchen. It's been quite a long day and we are all ready for some good sleep. The road back down to Salta was just as beautiful as on the way up, as the sun was setting on the colorful mountains. Although we did take a short cut, so as ... read more

Whew - 24 hours on a bus where the seats don't recline. Ugh. The trip from Buenos Aries to Puerto Iguazu was so nice because we were able to get seats on a Primo Cama. This ride was only a Semi-Cama. And the bus was not as well taken care of as our first bus ride....ie. no whiskey or champagne to help you sleep. But we made it through and landed in Salta around noon. Lovely town. We stayed just off the square and had some of the best empanadas ever. For about 1 pesos each. Then we went in search of a place to rent a car as we really want to see this area on our own time. Found a wonderful Tourist office called Marina Turismo and got what we needed. Wandered around a ... read more
