So another overnight bus journey, this time around 11 hours, from Cordoba to Salta. We knew that this wasn't going to be quite as luxurious as they weren't offering the same service. The seats reclined some way but were nowhere near as comfortable as the full recline though we did manage to sleep a reasonable amount. Dinner appeared to be a range of different cheese and ham sandwiches - brown bread, white bread, some kind of rolypoly pudding thing - with cheese and ham - and a main course of rice with unidentified meat. Overall probably worse than airline food. In the morning we were woken by the steward throwing our breakfast packs at us - not exactly 5 star service! The hotel hadn't received our reservation when we arrived but luckily still had a room ... read more

First of all, I am SO sorry I have neglected this! I have been procrastinating, and not sitting down to focus on the latest update! I hope you are doing well...in good health... enjoying the summer up there. I hear, particularly in CA, there are, some 1400 blazes going? Glad I´m not there! How sad to think of the loss of habitat that must be occuring in the wild areas, like we haven´t been losing enough! Sit back and relax, THIS one is a long one! Currently I am in Salta, LA LINDA (the beautiful), Argentina... I arrived over a week ago, Saturday, and have been very impressed so far. First I should say what I have been doing before this. After Beriloche in Patagonia, I traveled to Mendoza Argentina where I stayed for more or ... read more

Last night was the first of a handful of dates to see the Provincial Ballet Company of Salta perform two new works, namely: The Nutcracker & Peter & The Wolf. I must admit that when I heard they would be performing Peter & The Wolf I regressed for a moment back to my childhood days of listening to the story on vinyl. Where do the years go? So, after having "a moment" I decided there and then that as soon as tickets were on sale I was going to run down to the theatre and get me some 'entradas'. I am quickly becoming renowned as quite the Ballet Buff in the family, having been to all of the shows since the Inauguration for the re-opening of the theatre after its makeover and refurbishment back in November. ... read more

So now I know why this place is called Salta. I spent the day on an excursion to Salinas Grandes, the salt flats, high on the Puna (high altitude desert). We began the day by going back to Purmamarca to the same crafts market that we (ok, I) saw on Monday. As the others on the excursion were all different people from before, I used the opportunity to sit in the plaza and read. After Purmamarca we veered in a different direction in the Valley of Seven Colors and climbed (climbed sounds better than drove, right?) up and over a very tall mountain. Upon the descent, it looked like we had found the Tundra. But no, what appeared to be miles upon miles of pure, wind-driven snow was actually salt. Apparently, before the plate shifting that ... read more

Today is a federal holiday (somehow to celebrate Gaucho culture) , thus I did not go on any formal excursions. I slept in until 9, lazed around until about 11, and then headed over for mate at my favorite wi-fi zone. In the afternoon, I decided it was time to explore Salta. All of the shops were closed today, but there was a crafts fair in the park, so I walked through that. At the other end of the park there is a gondola that takes you up to the top of Cerro San Bernadino with panoramic city views. Today was very hazy and overcast, but I figured it would be my only opportunity as tomorrow I have another mega-excursion and Thursday I head back to Buenos Aires. The ride was nice, but the view really ... read more

(written last night) I am currently on a coche cama suite bus heading for Salta. This is the common mode of transportation here. It is a double decker bus. This particular bus is all first class accomodations. There are six other passengers upstairs with me and four downstairs. I am in a wide leather seat that reclines 180 degrees and has a privacy curtian that extends around me. There is an on-board waitress who comes around offering coffee, tea, mate, and sodas, which are all included in the price of the trip. There is also a dinner and a breakfast. I spent the day today doing what every educator longs to do during summer vacation, namely present to classes of students. Actually it was a lot of fun, if not much more involved than I had ... read more

(Holly Writing) So.. we were only going to stay in Salta for a couple of days. How come we were still there after a week? well, as Jane and I were crossing the central plaza of Salta one sunny evening, we were approached by an American girl who asked whether we had any plans over the next few days... instantly suspicious that she was trying to sell us something, we were guarded until she convinced us that really what we wanted to do was go on a 5 day road trip with herself and two Israeli guys. We thought about it, went out for a drink with them, and then said that yes, thank you, that would be lovely. So it was that Team Rufus was born; Alyson, Ran, Mor, Jane and myself piled into a ... read more

We arrived to Argentina with the plan to stay a few weeks in Buenos Aires, studying spanish and maybe taking some tango classes in the evenings. After all the travelling around and having to constantly move on from one place to another I was really looking forward to staying in one place for a longer time. We arrived to Argentina in the autumn so it was time to say goodbye to warm weather and that lovely tan of ours that we had been working on for so long! The start to our trip in Argentina wasn't too great. We arrived to Mendoza after a 7 hour busride and we had slept only two hours the night before. We arrived on a Friday so, obviously, our host German took us out to party... Nooo party again! Apparently ... read more
