Sat, Mar 1 We got up early and went on an excursion to Peninsula Valdez at 7:30 am. This peninsula is a wildlife preserve and a UNESCO World Heritage site. http://www.peninsulavaldes.org.ar/en/peninsula.php?contenido=peninsulavaldes It is a very desolate and arid peninsula, populated with lots of wildlife, including armadillos, guanacos, as well as several sheep ranches. We had a very interesting guide named Selva who spoke fluent Spanish, English and French. The trip around the peninsula took the whole day. At our first stop we visited an interpretative center. One of the big attractions of this peninsula is the opportunity for whale watching during the months from October - December. Even though we’re not here at the right time for whales, we still saw lots of wonderful wildlife. At our next stop, Punta Norte, we saw Sea Lions during ... read more

Friday, Feb 29 After an all night bus ride that included beautiful views of the Andes and a stop in the “Artesanal” town of El Bolsón, http://www.elbolson.com/turismo/index.shtml, we arrived around 7:00 am in Puerto Madryn which is a beautiful little beach town of about 90,000 people. http://www.madryn.gov.ar/turismo/ http://www.patagonia.com.ar/chubut/puertomadryn/infogral.php It’s on the Atlantic coast of Argentina in Chubut province (still part of the Patagonia region), on a gulf to the south of Peninsula Valdez. Puerto Madryn is on a long flat sandy beach with warm water and very mild surf. Peninsula Valdez is very famous for the wildlife - it’s a protected area and a World Heritage Site. But more on that in another blog entry. We dropped off our bags at our hotel, the Gran Madryn, http://www.granmadryn.com/secciones/inicio.php?lang=sp then went to a confi... read more

After another blissful overnight bus journey we arrived in Puerto Madryn. It was back to the camping again and the campsite barbecue area being the social hangout for the evening. More barbecue tips from the locals, so much so that on one night one guy pretty much cooked our food for us - no need to start another fire when there was plenty of room on his barbecue ( I wasn't complaining!). The main attraction here is the wildlife. Unfortunately we were about 6 weeks too late to see the whales but there were still plenty of other animals to see. The first day was spent on the Peninsula Valdes. The morning was a boat trip which took us really close to the sea lions where we could watch them basking on the rocky shores; they ... read more

So, I´m now in a small seaside place called Puerto Madryn. Surrounded basically by a stunning amount of flat nothing on the Argentine steppe, it, along with a few places in the area, was founded by some intrepid welshman, who thought it was obviously a good place to raise sheep. I´m not convinced it was, as they have to limit the amount of sheep to 1 every 3 hectares to avoid desertification. So you don´t necesarily seeb many. Anyway, what there IS a lot of is coastal wildlife. It seems that everything under the sun that likes a bit of the wet stuff, finds this part of the world a good place to come and make babies. Now, unfortunately, it´s not baby-making season for whales, so I didn´t see any of them. Oh, apart from a ... read more

The bus arrived 5 hours early in Puerto Madryn, so two very sleepy people were slightly surprised and confused having being woken up and told to get off. After finally having woken up, and several very cheesy empanadas (small pasties) later, we walked out to the Ecocentro on the outskirts of town. Welcomed by the skeleton of a Right Whale outside we stepped into the perfect beach house - and a cool exhibition about the local area and why is is so important to a huge variety of sealife. We spent the whole of the next day in a minibus. Well it felt like it. But we did manage a few stops on the tour of Peninsula Valdez, taking in sealions (lots of fighting, waddling, swimming, smelling), penguins (cuddling, sunbathing, climbing/walking huge distances on little legs), ... read more

Amy I am actually transcibing this in from a couple of weeks ago. We updated this thing and as we were posting the update the internet crashed and we were too tired and full of wine and fish to try again! So, back to the 29th Jan, when I was writting this whilst on a bus out of Puerto Madryn... The last time I wrote, we were about to go over to Colonia del Sacremente in Uruguay from Buenos Aires. Before we left we thought we would go out and have a traditional meal of parilla, which is meat cooked over coals and is very delicious. Sadly we ordered the first thing on the menu which turned out to be asado.. which I found out after trying to eat it - was all the bits you ... read more

After another night bus we made it to the Atlantic coast and a town called Puerto Madryn. We stayed here for 2 days as I wanted to see dolphins and Penguins (not Deans ideal activity as it doesn´t get you out of puff). We spent the first day on the beach and the second on our trip to see the penguins. Unfortunately the dolphin trip was cancelled as it was too windy. A shame as the dolphins are half white and half black and this is the one of the few places in the world you can see them. So onwards to the penguin colony. It was fab thousnads and thousands of penguins and you just walk through them and watch them swim. The babies are growing up and having swimming lessons..very cute. On the way ... read more
