Hey everyone! Jess and I took our first big trip this weekend! Its been quite a change from our study abroad experience where we went to a new country every weekend. Working definitely limits our ability to leave the city very much. But nonetheless, I am still loving my time here and I enjoy the times I do get to travel! This past weekend we went to Puerto Madryn, located in the Patagonia region of Buenos Aires. We decided to go to Puerto Madryn because during this time of the year, hundreds of right whales, sea elephants, seals and penguins come to this one Peninsula. We definitely wanted to catch the wild life in action. I went with Jess and some friends from the city - Benny, Tom and Pablo. We started the trip on Thursday ... read more

We spent a few days in Puerto Madryn. We got to seeing nesting Magellan Penguins and Right Whales with their calves right from the shore. It´s pretty amazing to be that up close to nature in their environment. You feel very much like an imposter at times. We found a pretty amazing overlook near the whales...beautiful water and a great view of the whales. We hope you enjoy the photo....it cost us a dusty, windy, miserable 4 hour bike ride to get it! We´re pretty sure we even saw Lance Armstrong walking his bike up the sandy hill too. It was worth it, but not worth repeating. We stayed at a fairly nice hostel. We had dinner with a girl from England and a guy from Denmark. Lars has been backpacking every year for about 6 ... read more

It´s the springtime in Argentina, and with the long, cold, rainy winter behind them, the people of Buenos Aires are eager to get away from the city the weather had trapped them in. It´s a little early to head to the popular sandy beaches in Uruguay (Argentina´s favorite summer playground), but Patagonia´s endless Atlantic coastline provides a great natural landscape that is perfect for escaping in search of clean air and beautiful scenery. Columbus day has provided a three-day weekend that justifies the 20 hour bus ride south to Puerto Madryn; a tourist town sourrounded by enormous national parks and located on the inner edge of a quiet bay. And while it´s still too cold to enjoy the water, the playful boardwalk and enormous beaches have attracted thousands of people to come relax and enjoy the ... read more

That´s it. We are in Puerto Madryn. Where the Southern Right Whales have elected it their home for the next 6 months. That´s incredible thing about animals. Their home is the planet. No need for nationality, borders, passports, visas, nothing! They elect where they are going to spend some time for a while and just do it. In this case, the whales choose this area as a breeding ground as the climate, temperature of the water are ideal. They will spend all their time mating and raising babies and teach their descendance the route to take to come back here when they are old enough. After a long bus journey, Renata is not at her best as she is suffering from a chest infection. But still, being strong, she doesn´t let it overpower her. There are ... read more

We caught an overnight bus from Bariloche to Puerto Madryn, a 13 hour journey falling asleep to mountains, lakes and forest and waking to a slightly eirie flat, treeless, misty Patagonian landscape. Buses are the most popular and cheapest way to travel around South America and it proved to be very comfortable and we were adeqautely fed and watered and even watched The Queen on video! We arrived early in the coastal town of Puerto Madryn and when we had shaken away the sleepy dust we walked down to the seafront to orintate ourselves. We couldn´t believe our eyes, there were about 7 whales playing just off the coast. You can imagine our excitement at seeing whales when we had only been in the town for half an hour. The next day we took a tour ... read more

After Bariloche we decided to go from one side of Argentina to the other for a spot of whale watching in the Atlantic Ocean, the first time we have been on this side since Panama, 5 months ago! We traveled overnight for 14 hours to Puerto Madryn and arrived sleepy and tired at 6am. We tried to check into the hostel we booked but they were full until somebody checked out. Check out was 10 am, so we sat about and waited and typically the people for our room left it until 10 on the dot to check out! Didn’t get up to much on the first day and just booked the tour, which took in Peninsula Valdes, Patagonian landscape, Elephant seals and the Southern Right Whales. Total cost including park fees was 60 pound each ... read more

I am not a city gal, and so did not like the prospect of staying in Buenos Aires for too long, although by the end of it, I didn’t want to leave, especially as the Lindas were going to a very exciting party that weekend. I decided to see whales. So there I went again, hopping onto a eighteen hour bus from Buenos Aires to Puerto Madryn. Three Hollywood blockbusters, one bingo game, one hot dinner and a breakfast later, I arrived to Puerto Madryn, a quiet little town off the shore of the Atlantic Ocean. The town struck me as being very British with its neat streets and gardens. No surprise, as this is the place that the Welsh immigrants settled to escape persecution from the English all those years ago. I saw many red-haired ... read more

There is more Krill in the Ocean than fish consumed yearly by the entire world!!! South America » Argentina » Puerto Madryn By Elmo AbbeyJune 14th 2007Abbey ElliottWe spent a day traveling round Peninsula Valdes, Tom you will be interested to know that it is a UNESCO world heritage site. We picked the coldest day of the year to go out on a motor powered dingy to see the whales, our feet took 2 hours to defrost!! having said that was really amazing to get so close to such amazing creatures. The seals were also very cool but you could not get very close to them. ... read more

The title of this blog originally had the word armadillo in it. However, despite 4 days looking for them on the Peninsula Valdes we didn't even find a trace. This was more than made up for by the MANY sightings of Right Whales just off shore, splashing about and doing their tail / flipper waving thing, but more on that later... Time to start one of our blog entries with a celebration - Cath celebrated her birthday on 28th April (hurrah). To unintentionally add a touch of humour to the event, Rob got Cath a card in Spanish very carefully chosen for its message - ‘To My Wonderful Wife' (of course). Unfortunately wife is ‘esposa’, and the card read ‘esposo’, so Rob had actually purchased a card 'To My Wonderful Husband'. Cath nearly fell over laughing. ... read more

After coming back from Torres Del Paine I had a notion to return there as a volunteer. I had spoken to a few of the rangers and refugio staff while I was there and got some contacts to get in touch with so I thought I would hang around Puerto Natales for a while and see if I could get myself work in the park for a month. Luckily when I got back from the park there was a notice up in my hostel asking for help for a few weeks so I volunteered along with a Welsh girl called Lauren. Nothing ever came of the job in the park though, admitedly after not trying very hard to get hold of anyone at the park a couple of times I gave up. I had a great ... read more
