We left Buenos Aires for an 18 hour bus ride to Puerto Madryn. On the way whenever we stopped at traffic lights people would juggle to entertain us, it was really odd. We arrived at our hostel Chepatagonia in the morning, that afternoon we decided to do a bike ride to Punta Loma. It was 17 km each way. The hostel owner told us it would take 3 hours but took us 6!!!! The bike ride was so hard as we did'nt realise how hot it was going to be and the path was gravel and very difficult to ride on. The road seemed to be never ending and there was so many hills to climb. Along the way we saw a lighhouse and wrecked ship. When we finally reached our destation we saw sea lions ... read more

Ok, so we are obviously no longer traveling and are still catching up with our blogs, but we know you guys want to see the photos (well, the ones that weren't stolen) and we want some way of remembering our fantastic trip as it already seems like a long time ago..... being back in an office just makes you want to do it all over again though, but I suppose you have to earn a living occasionally! So we had just done loads of trekking in Chile round the Torres del Paine circuit last time we blogged and after that we thought we would head back over the border to Argentina's east coast and catch the end of Orca spotting season at Puerto Madryn. Now full-time campers we took a bus to the end of town ... read more

Arriving in Puerto Madryn we could definitely feel that the town is a special place, and for obvious reasons - the wildlife. In particular the Southern Right Whale, Orca (Killer Whale), Megallanic Penguins, Sealions and Elephant Seals, along with an abundance of different birds. We were both very excited at the prospect of seeing these animals in their natural habitat and wasted no time in reserving places on excursions to see them over the next couple of days. Puerto Madryn also brought us our first hostel experience as up to now we had been living it up in "hotels", however things weren´t so bad as this also brought with it the opportunity to have a home cooked meal courtesy of Suzz - a very welcome break from eating out. Our first full day started with ... read more

After just over a week in Buenos Aires it was time to get out before I got stuck and see some of this country. Was on my way to do a spanish course in Bariloche and thought that I´d stop over for a few days in a town called Puerto Madryn. My main aim of coming to this town was going to the nearby Peninsula Valdes National Park, which is the place where Orca come and beach themselves in hope of catch a sea lion for dinner. Sounds all a little morbid but it is nature at rawest and the chance to see Orca doing this was too much for me to pass up. The town of Puerto Madryn is based on the Atlantic Ocean, not much of a swimming beach and way too cold ... read more

The bus ride was very comfortable in Carma class. Although the landscape that passed by my window was extremely monotone, they entertained us with movies and served coffee and sandwitches. Puerto Madryn as typical Beach-Touristy Place. On one of the Mainroads you find one tour seller after the other. The Town has some very good restaurants for fish and beef. Besides that, you can only go on the Peninsula Valdez or down to Punto Tombo. I did the last thing, because its not whale watching season anymore, and in Punto Tombo are still a couple thousand Penguins left. On the way south we stopped at the coast and hopped on a boat to search for Commerson´s Dolphins. They are only up to 1,6m long and therefore belong to the smallest dolphins in the world. Once we ... read more

Puerto Madryn was at the end of another 28 hours on a bus - while Patagonia has thrown up some amazing sights and experiences, I won't be disappointed to leave behind the long distances. The Welsh first settled this area back in the mid 1800's, when they looked for a place where they could halt the dilution of their language and culture by the marauding English back home. Perhaps they were concerned that their society would be corrupted by the liberal and gratuitous use of vowels in the English language. I think the Argentines felt sorry for the Welsh and in a touching gesture let them settle in the least arable and most useless tract of their land that they could find. There is little to indicate the Welsh heritage of Puerto Madryn these days ... read more

Kohta on aika jo palata kotiin =( Nyt ollaan Argentiinan rannikolla Puerto Madryn nimisessa kaupungissa. We've now just left Puerto Madryn where we spent 3 days amongst some pretty amazing wildlife and not a whole lot more! We got into Puerto Madryn EARLY in the morning and hopped straight on the bus to Puerto Piramides (a tiny village on the Valdes Peninsula where only 300 people live and probably double that number of penguins)! We met an Israeli couple (Yael and Hagay) on the bus and spent the next few days exploring the local area with them. We hired a man and his 4x4 to take us up the coast to where you can see all the wildlife. I sat in the front and tried my crap Spanish out on him and we managed to half quite a convincing conversation even if i did do a lot of nodding and smiling ... read more

Orca South America » Argentina » Puerto Madryn By LewisMarch 11th 2007Caroline Well I never dreamed I would go to "that" place. I´m sure you´ve all seen the footage where the Orca´s (killer whales) launch themselves on to the beach to try and catch some seals to eat ... I was there. We were told we probably wouldn't see them at all so when we got off the truck and heard they were we stampeded down to the viewing places and waited in anticipation. Unfortunately the Orca´s had been feeding for the previous 3 hours on a different beach before we arrived but to see them cruising past the seals was exciting. I was willing them to come up o... read more
