Messed up when we first published this a couple of days ago and no one received it so here goes again. Time to do some catching up on this thing as we´re about 2 weeks ahead of it due to Niamhs bout of writters block. Think it might have been the immodium that caused it. Having said that some facts need to be clarified in relation to our Spanish course and Niamhs perceived ability to now read Spanish poetry having completed the course that I dropped out off. Lets start at the start. Monday morning 9am, first day of Spanish course. In comes our first teacher that we will have for the first 2 hours each day. This guys real enthusiastic but of the 6 people in the class, 5 are looking at him like rabbits ... read more

The trip from Tandil to Bahia Blanca was uneventful. No bus breakdowns. For the first couple of hours there are actually some minor undulations and even the odd hill with huge fields of sunflowers. Listened to some Devo on the IPod, that was a bit different. Arrived at the rather ramshackle Bahia Blanca bus station (new much bigger station being bult next door) and immediately went to find some tickets for the next night to take us on to Puerto Madryn and Patagonia proper. Managed to get the front two seats upstairs for the 8.30pm departure. After finding our hotel and checking in we went for a bit of a wander. Bahia Blanca has three multi screen cinemas but not much of a choice of viewing. For some reason I had had a flick through the ... read more

Since Buenos Aires I have been enjoying time in a coastal town of Patagonia called Puerto Madryn. A town of around 80 thousand ppl, it is a nice quiet change from the craziness of 12 mil in Bs. As. This is the beginning of my adventures in Patagonia. When thinking of Patagonia, most picture rugged mountain ranges with steep glacial peaks kissing the sky with wild rivers flowing like veins down their wind ravaged flanks. This is how I mainly pictures Patagonia, anyway. Well here, along the coast, is a much different picture. Arid steppe (dry and flat), the eye can see forever it seems. Beautiful in its own right, none the less. Puerto Madryn sits on the shore at the most western point of the Golfo Nuevo. A tiny gulf with shallow shore lines, the ... read more

Apesar disto, a cidade eh bonita, formos a Peninsula Valdes e vimos leos marinhos, elefantes marinhos e pinguins.

I have always been intrigued by the idea of "Welsh Patagonia" and finally a few days ago I was able to fulfil a dream and visit the place. There have been various waves of Welsh immigration to Patagonia after the first boat (The Mimosa) landed here in 1865. The Welsh migrants were looking for a new country, away from the pesky English where they could speak their own language and practice their religion as they wanted. Bizarrely, they settled on Patagonia - cold, desolate, wet, with poor agricultural prospects - not the most obvious choice! However, after various setbacks and problems, the community began to thrive. And to this day there is a strong "Welsh" element to the population and many links to the old country. Puerto Madryn was the sight of the first Welsh landing, ... read more

Puerto Madryn: Gateway to Peninsula Valdes After a long, arduous journey from Cordoba to Puerto Madryn, punctuated by an occasional stop in some small village, before moving on slowly through the seemingly endless & bleak Pampa, we arrived in Puerto Madryn, gateway to Peninsula Valdes and Welsh Patagonia. If we thought we had it hard on this 20 hour+ bus journey, it was nothing compared to the journey made by the first permanent settlers in this area. The Welsh arrived in the middle of winter in 1865 after a two month voyage from Wales. Things were no easier once they arrived, and for the first few months lived in caves near the sea. Not quite the idyllic Patagonia they were expecting! Trelew and Gaiman have, today, more of a Welsh feel to them than Puerto Madryn, ... read more
