I arrived in Puerto Madryn at 1.30pm on Wednesday 9 September after an 18 hour bus journey from Buenos Aires. After checking into El Gualicho hostel, I went for a walk. Within a couple of minutes I was at the beach and immediately saw a few whales quite close to the shore. It was a spectacular sight and a vast contrast from the big city that I had just left behind. The sun was shining and I was witness to these huge Southern Right Whales as they come to these shores at this time of year to breed and be with their young. The England Vs Croatia game was on at 4pm so I had to find a bar in this small town. Eventually I found a café with a TV but they were showing the ... read more

Puerto Madryn is about great day trips, lovely seafood, patagonian landscapes and close encounters with the local sea life. Depending on the time of the year you might see Orcas, Southern Right Whales, Penguins, Sea-lions, Elephant Seals, Guanacoes, Lesser-Rheas and various other birds. Our trip there from Buenos Aires had a few small hiccups and one major one. The first-class service didn't quite match up to our experience from Iguazu. The alcohol was sparse, the seats creaky and the bus was ancient, but we made the best of it. On a positive note, we practically had our own private cinema downstairs and all of the films were in English with Spanish subtitles, so we barely noticed the first 6 hours pass by. After another late dinner we settled in to get some sleep, only to be ... read more

After leaving Bariloche, we had been hoping to continue our journey south along the legendary Route 40 (the road that Che Guevara famously travelled in his book the Motorcycle Diaries). Unfortunately though, it turned out to be closed for the winter, so we decided to head east to the Atlantic coast instead. After a 14-hour bus trip from Bariloche, we arrived bright and early at our hostel in Puerto Madryn. Peninsula Valdes Puerto Madryn is situated in the central Patagonian province of Chubut and is the gateway to Peninsula Valdes, one of the most valuable wildlife areas in the world. The peninsula was declared a UNESCO world heritage site in 1999 and is home to important breeding populations of elephant seals, penguins, sea lions and orcas (aka “killer whales”). From June to December though, the stars ... read more

No I haven't made a spelling mistake in my blog title all will become apparent...... So after our chilled morning in Calafate we hit the bus and went back south to Rio Gallegos and after a few hours we were back on the road heading north to Puerto Madryn with a bus conductor, I call them bus conductor but effectively they check you and your luggage on the bus and then dish up the food and drinks along the way, anyway ours on this bus took a shine to the two English chicas who speak very little Spanish and for the whole journey he would come up and check we were ok and happy. Even when his shift ended in Trelew and a new conductor came on he must have been told about us as he ... read more

Dearest Readers, It gives me great pleasure in announcing that without a doubt for me, Puerto Madryn, the Pennisular Valdes is my favourite place so far in Argentina, and yes that has everything to do with the fact we saw Southern Right Whales both from the shore and in a boat :) Anyhow, where to begin - so when I last wrote we left El Calafate and took a bus (via Rio Gallegos) to arrive in Puerto Madryn. I won´t bore you with long bus tales however a few things to highlight is the cute kid at Rio G who took much amusement from patting mr gently and running away, the conductor of the bus who seemed to like the English chicas and kept checking we were ok, along with a fellow female passenger who kept ... read more

Another long bus ride, another destination reached, this time Puerto Madryn on the east coast of Argentina. First impressions are of an English seaside town, but out of season. It has all the elements, the shingle beach, the pier, take away shops on the front, but because it is now heading into winter, everything is closed...................really reminds us of Brighton or Barmouth in October. The reason for coming here is the abundance of wildlife. The Valdes peninsula is a world heritage site for nature and is home to sealions, penguins, Southern right Whales and best of all Orca´s. We booked ourselves on a trip to go and see all of the above, but nature being nature you are only given a 3% chance of spotting an Orca, fair enough. We were warned as the season ends ... read more

The bus was quite comfortable, like a plane trip, complete with a steward, meals like in the plane was meager but quite a good experience. The bed inclines up to 140 degrees i think. in the morning after being served breakfast we played bingo! I lost but was fun and weird at the same time. Arriving in Puerto Madryn, it was cold!! i was shivering as I wait for my backpack to be handed to me, it has to go through x ray at the bus station, dont know why. Went to info office and asked about what to do in this town and where to stay, decided to go to ChePatagonia, good reviews on this hostel, Maria the lady at the info desk speaks good English and very informative, she told me last week everyday ... read more

We were rudely awoken by what we though was an earthquake, but it turned out to be the huge Czech woman wobbling out of her bed above Ross! She was a beast and we had not slept due to her snoring (yes dad, she was as loud as you!). We jumped in the VW GOL (not golf) and headed to Punta Tombo, about 180km away to visit the penguin colony. When we got there the ranger explained that there were over 100 million penguins in this small area. Needless to say we were pretty excited at the prospect of seeing so many penguins! The hike was only short but as soon as we passed through gate we started seeing penguins chilling out under shrubs! After a few minutes walk we could see the sea and even ... read more

Hi everyone. As promised here is the photos from Puerto Madryn, when we went to see come of the local wildlife. We are actually in Ushuaia at the moment..got here at 10 pm last nigth after sitting on a coach for 13 hours! Not the best craic I have ever had but it was broken up a little by some very long boarder crossing and a trip on a ferry. We booked ahead as we know we would get here late...and it´s still pretty busy this time of year...30 euro per night right...you wanna see what we are after scoring. We have a gorgeous little house all to ourselves with a view of mountains and a ... read more

Hi guys, Sorry for the lack of entries, we are trying to cover a bit of ground and get somewhere a bit interesting. We just left a lovely little town called Puerto Madryn. We have some great photos of penguins, elephant seals and sealions and other things that look like lamas. Just can´t add them at the moment cos we are in a shitty in-between town with crappy computers. We are just staying here one night after the 18 hour bus journey we have just done. We get another tomorrow morning at 8 for 12 hours. But after that we will be in Ushuaia...the bottom of the world. And we will finally have a bit of scenory to photograph. East coast of Argentina is the flattest place I have ever seen....nothing no hills, trees, grass..nothing. Luckily ... read more
