Sunday Jan. 16th, 2011 The Edge of the World The plane took off from Raleigh-Durham airport on one of those cold clear mornings where the visibility is unlimited. Once we reached our cruising altitude of 37,000 feet the view was unbelievable. From my vantage point in a window seat on the port side of the cabin I could see over a hundred miles, all the way to the outer banks as we headed south toward Wilmington. There were no clouds on the horizon and then as I looked out across the great expanse of the Atlantic Ocean I saw it for the first time, the actual edge of the world. I have seen a clear horizon many times while at sea, but the effect is completely different at sea level than what I saw now at ... read more

Hello All, I think it may be Saturday! Not quite sure now of the days of the week, a sure sign that you are REALLY enjoying the holiday. We have spent today in Aruba, a Dutch Island very near to Venezuela. We saw a tour on this stop for a ride out in a semi submersible ship, well a sort of boat with deep hull and glass windows so you can see the fish, coral reef and various wrecks. Most of the wrecks we saw were the other passengers on the tour! Bit of a gathering of old moaners and at least two complaining of being seasick – doh ! it's a trip out to sea in a small boat, take the hint! Anyway we did see a few interesting bits but the snorkeling the other ... read more

Hi folks, First day of married life yesterday slipped away in the warm Caribbean sunshine. In the pool for a swim and we enjoyed a nice deckside BBQ. Day two of married life (today Thursday) found us in Barbados and a busy day off on a Catamaran (as if we hadn't had enough of boats!) Sailed up the coast with a very jolly Barbadian crew. Stopped off for snorkeling with Caribe Turtles, Nigel reporting turtles of about 3ft long, and plenty of them! I personally was a little more cautious but even staying nearer to the boat, was visited by smaller (but plenty big enough for me) baby turtles. More snorkeling a little further up the coast over a reef and a wreck surrounded by shoals of fish. After everyone had finished the serious snorkeling we ... read more

Dec 16th We slept like babies being rocked gently to sleep by the soft roll of the ship. The banging on the door woke us at 8:30; it was the breakfast we had ordered the night before. Like two kids in a candy store we enjoyed coffee, croissants, fresh fruit and cereal overlooking the ocean as we passed Cuba. We had entered the Old Bahama Channel paralleling the northern coastline of Cuba which is supposed to be visible all day from our deck. The temperature is now 22C and partly cloudy. After breakfast we were excited to go out and explore the ship. There was a chefs carving competition in the Atrium. It was amazing to watch they are very talented artists. A visit to the casino netted a win of $10. For lunch we decided ... read more

The holidays have arrived in full force onboard the Dream! Kristina and I have been working on making decorations for our club which we’ve finally hung up. It’s not quite as elaborate as the décor job I did last year on the Spirit, but it still looks pretty great! It also means that it’s time again for the Holiday Show, an extra show that the entertainment team is all involved in. Our teens are taught a little hip hop number by the ship’s onboard breakdancers and perform it as part of the show. So we take the whole club out to watch the show and some get up to actually perform. I really enjoy the holiday show, mostly to watch the youngest kids from camp carnival get up there. They are so cute! There is something ... read more

Been there done that. As a first time cruiser I had certain expectations. Some of those expectations were perhaps unrealistic. Below is a list of my thoughts and experiences on the Carnival Cruise ship Glory... • Food. All food is amazing on the ship. FALSE. Most of the food is mediocre at best. Most of the food is served warm - cold. The only HOT food I've received while onboard has been in the steak house that we had to pay $30 extra. It was amazing! We ate in the dining room most nights and enjoyed good company. The buffets found on the ship aren't near as good as those found in Vegas. • Lodging. Your stateroom will be beyond your expectations. FALSE. As I mentioned in my first shipboard blog, the accommodations were less than ... read more

It was time for my second cruise, so we said good-bye to San Juan, and boarded the boat with Avo Jay. This one was much longer than the 2 night cruise to the Bahamas I did a couple years ago. This cruise also had a different port every day except for one, so there were many new countries for me to check out. While I will talk about the different ports in different blogs, it is time to write about all the fun on the boat. THis was definitely a BIG boat. We walked all around to see what was there. Lots of different places to eat, a camp for kids, game rooms, lots of bars, and of course, a few pools. Within a couple hours of being on the boat, Me, Daddy and Avo Jay ... read more

This afternoon I was at work in my club. The teens were playing video games and I was making some holiday decorations. The youth director onboard came into the club with her ship cell phone, my boss from the Miami office was on the phone for me . . . to give me some exciting news . . . I have been offered the position to be the Club O2 Director (the job I always do onboard) for the start-up team for Carnival’s brand-new ship, the Carnival Magic. The Magic will begin sailing in May 2011 with set-up happening in April for our department. The ship is currently being built in Italy which is where I’ll be sent to start up the ship. The Magic’s home port will be Barcelona, Spain and will sail to the ... read more

I’ve made it through my first week on the Dream and so far so good. I’m lucky that I have some friends here from previous ships. Circle C is the younger teen club and the directors of that club are the closest thing to an immediate co-worker that I get. Jazzy was the Circle C director on my last ship, the Spirit, and Jenny was her replacement (for when I was in Hawaii and Alaska). Currently Jazzy is finishing up her contract on the Dream and Jenny has arrived to replace her! It’s great seeing them again. There are a few other familiar faces around the ship and I’m working at meeting new people too. On the Dream we alternate between cruising the Western and Eastern Caribbean. This week was our Western run which took me ... read more
