The frenzy couldn't continue so today returned to "normal". I did get an email from a friend in WA saying we got an article in the "West Australian". I started this morning at channel 7 again. they didn't come out for an "on air" shot but. So it seemed a quiet morning. I resolved to walk to Glebe only because I had met a couple from Glebe who owned a bookstore when I was in Ulladulla two years ago. It was a pleasant walk. Glebe was cool änd stickers were popular. Its a bit of a scene because Sydney University is there. Didn't find them but had a $6 piece of chocolate cake. Hey, the place up the road wanted $6.50. Then some girl who loved the flag and got three stickers said I should go ... read more

Alright so it's been awhile since we've been near a computer. We actually spent three more days in Byron, two days in Surfers Paradise and two days in Brisbane since the last time I wrote on this thing. Oh yeah and I just wanted to wish a happy belated birthday to Leah and Jen. I heard you guys had fun in Windsor and i missed out, although Towner, bullshit it's 34 degrees there but it is here. I don't even remember what I've talked about on this thing and what I haven't. So we'll start with the rest of Byron. We met a lot more really cool people, one girl from Texas, Katie, spent most of the rest of our days there with us which consisted of the beach and drinking from the goon at night. ... read more

After we finally got Chris away from the pole, we settled in for a short night's sleep in Airlie Beach, the launching point for most trips to the Whitsundays, a group of 90 or so islands that feature calm waters and beautiful scenery. The sailing trips are affordable, and many visitors Down Under consider them to be the highlight of the trip - we would tend to agree. We headed out on the Maxi Ragamuffin , a former racing boat modified for touring. Skippered by a former sailing professional who also holds a Ph.D. in Math, it allowed us to travel some of the way purely under sail power. After a couple of hours, we docked at Blue Pearl Bay, where we spent some time snorkelling at a reef off the shore of one of the ... read more

Tues 10th Jan - Thurs 26th Jan I’ve arrived in Melbourne with great hopes and excitement! Not sure why though! Oh well, maybe it was time to cut the apron strings of Sydney and to see the rest of the country! I arrived at 7am…too early to check into my new hostel in St Kilda, so ended up having brekkie at a café and then wandering down to St Kilda beach to kill time! it’s ok but not as nice as the beaches in Sydney! and I was constantly being attacked by horrible flies - I think it’s their mission in life to pester the crap out of you! I’m finding myself getting really frustrated at them and telling them to bugger off…like they can understand me!! Obviously they don’t and keep pestering me! Aarrgghhh! Met ... read more

Background Milford Sounds is one of the wettest places in the world. It gets over 6 metres of a rain a year! Some say it is one of the Seven Wonders of the World! The trek itself is an amazing experience; walking it with some six of your mates makes it even better! The walk itself is 53.5km, over four days Day One: Glade Wharf - Clinton Hut 5km Before starting the track you have a short ferry ride from Te Anu Downs. Once dropped off it is a cruising 5 km to Clinton Hut, the track is well looked after and relatively flat. There are a lot of day trips that run along this stretch of the track, so the track is wide and suitable for any level of fitness. Once you arrive at the ... read more

Well I didn’t exactly forget to update the travel blog but we’ve been pretty busy and internet cafés haven’t exactly been jumping out at us - unlike the local wild life. Speaking of which, one thing I did forgot was how annoying flies are - and judging by my families reaction after 15 years in Australia I guess it’s something you never get used to… So let me take you back to Oz as we are currently in India (where the computers are about the same speed as the cows in the street but a little less frequent). The last time I wrote I was heading down south of Perth towards Bunbury to surprise who looked after me many years ago. So I left the Old Fire Station in Freo and headed south, to say Brian, ... read more

We arrived in Rainbow Beach the day before heading off on our Fraser Island adventure. We checked into a hostel called 'Frasers' and later that day had our briefing for the next three days on the island. We got to meet the group that we would be spending a few days with, 4 of which were French and the other two were an Australian couple from Brisbane. After the safety briefing for driving the 4x4 correctly, we put together a list of the food we would require and headed to the supermarket. This is when we noticed that the 4 French people couldnt speak much English atall, and although we can just get by in a couple of other languages, French isnt one of them. When we got back we had a drink with the group ... read more

Rainy rain rain! Yesterday was another washout. I don't want to blame Nelson itself, but the prospect of staying here and working for a few months no longer sounds exciting to me. Maybe it's the weather's fault, maybe I'm just too impatient and can't wait to get traveling again, but whatever the reason is I was really glad when Shaheen walked in yesterday morning and confessed that she was having doubts about staying here as well. So we decided to throw out our tentative plans (after all, they were only tentative) and see some more of the country before settling down for a semi-permanent job. We then spent most of Wednesday afternoon in the lounge with a big map of the South Island, a Lonely Planet, and notes with recommendations from all of our friends and ... read more

Australia, Australia, Australia We Love You! Yes, I know Monty Python did it well, but the real patriotism comes out on Australia Day when crowds pack Darlington Harbour, watching the huge screens broadcast speaches by local dignitaries and famous Aussies. It was cool to see, and the fireworks were wicked, but as usual, it just turned into a box-of-wine-piss-up with us, but for one day, I was really, really proud to be a part of Australia, even if I was just passing through.... read more

Useful tip: if arriving in major Australian city on Australia Day, do phone ahead for accommodation unless you enjoy playing out the "no room at the inn" nativity scene of course. We arrived at Perth airport at 5:40am on Australia Day, a national holiday where 400,000 people would be congregating in the evening for a fireworks display & we hadn't prebooked any accomadation. Actually, we found room at inn four, after deciding inn three was actually in the midst of a building site and, therefore, inaccessible and potentially noisy. Perth and surrounds were fantastic. The riverfront was buzzing the day we arrived-with stunt bikes jumping off ramps, aerobatic flybys, beach volleyball, and a stage with excellent Aussie bands- namely "The Avenues" and "The Panics". As darkness fell, there was an awesome firewor... read more
