OK, well i am currently sitting at the desk of a computer in the eary evening hours on Thursday the 26th of January 2006. The 3 day tour of Ayers Rock and the other natural attractions in central australia ended about one hour ago. It was pretty memorable for all sorts of reasons and i am writing this diary entry in the hope that i will be able to capture the essence of everything that went on. The tour began at 6.30am on Tuesday, i found myself sat on a bus of 24 people ready for the trip. The tour guide announced that we would be going to Ayers Rock that very day and that this would be the main focus of the first day. The tour bus set off into the red centre and after ... read more

Now that i am travelling alone, i seem to have a preoccupation with meeting other people, this has stemmed a bit from an email i received from Cal (the guitarist who i met in New Zealand) who said that meeting others is the most rewarding part of travelling. Therefore on my first day in Alice Springs i was looking to talk to people and try to latch on to them a bit (god, I'm insecure). Anyway i met a few people who all seemed to range from coming across as fine to annoying. However the people i met that i really did like were a British couple called Jo and Rich. They are in their mid thirties and have been travelling on and off (but mostly on) for three years and are two and a half ... read more

Howdy all! Just thought we should let you all know what we've been up too lately - - - - apart from being wonderfully lazy, reading on the beach! Here is where we have been since last time...... We made it too Opatiki, where the Pacafic Ocean was blue and calm, the sun hot and barmy. This was a happy change from the churning and rugged west coast at New Plymouth. After lazing there for a while we journeyed up the coast to Papamoa and surfed next to the mile after mile of blond sand, in metre high waves and under blue sky. Whilst there we explored several "Pa" (which are the equvilent of our stone age hill forts, yet only a few centuries old dating from the 18th and 19th centuries and maori civilisation), had ... read more

Sydney’s ‘Big Day Out’ one day music festival is the Aussie version of Scotland’s ‘T In The Park’ (TITP). We managed to buy some last minute tickets online by basically sitting for an hour on the internet 2 days before Christmas Eve in Kalbarri waiting for an extra allocation to go on sale. We were lucky as so many peeps have tried and failed to get their hands on these tickets for some months now, such a popular event it is. This year’s line up was due to be really great with some of our favourites listed as playing; including gems such as White Stripes, Magic Numbers and Kings of Leon. With this in mind we’d been really looking fwd to the day arriving when we’d don our festy gear and trip along to the Olympic ... read more

I'm sending this out to alert the new subscribers. People I've met while in NZ who have made my trip memorable. I haven't had a lonely moment since I've been here. New Zealanders and well as travelers from other countries have befriended me, helped me fix my bike, given me invaluable info on traveling by bike in NZ, fed me amazing food, told me stories of their travels and lives, and have been great company. Keith, the man who saved the day by removing the small spur from the hole for my pin on my BOB trailer also invited me to dinner at their house for a "traditional New Zealand meal". That ofcourse includes mutton (sheep meat). I spent the evening before last with him and his wife tasting new foods that are cooked in new ... read more

You can play dot-to-dot with my mozzy bites and the actual inside of my ears are peeling, which is a unique and lovely experience. My fault for not applying enough insect repellent and sunscreen, respectively, but it has in no way detracted from the amazing last couple of days I had in Northern Queensland. First, diving on the Great Barrier Reef. An undescribably surreal experience, so I am not even going to try, except to say that I saw giant clams, starfish, all sorts of sea cucumbers (remember those little bad boys, Gill, Wenders and Orla??!), hundreds of multicoloured fish including clownfish and one large black scary looking one that isn't at all scary - a Great Crevally. I stroked a sea turtle too. But the most exhilariting moment was coming within 5 metres of a ... read more

Hi friends and family, You've probably realised by now that we're here in NZ safe and sound and having a great time chilling, surfing (I kid you not - more later!!). We had good flights out, although horribly jet lagged when we arrived in Singapore where it was about 30 degrees. Sat outside in the garden of our hotel listening to live music .. good singer, pity about his material - Englebert Humperdick is alive and well:-) We have spent a smashing 3 days with Chris and Helena - Chris has turned into a beach-bum, sun tanned, hair bleached and long (for Chris) Helena just looks gorgeous - sun bronzed and sun streaked hair - I hate her!!! At the moment we are staying at Cathedral Cove (those who know my wallpaper at work will know ... read more

Here's a few more photos. This place is just a few kilometres south of Dunedin city, which looks pretty awesome when the sun's out. Not really a surfing beach, but a small wave trying to come through. The last picture is of a wild penguin hiding in a cave. Not a great picture but you get the idea. Played my first game of golf the other week too. Good course, crap golf. Thanks for your suggestions on naming my sheep. So far we have: "Willy Warmer" (Let's overlook the fact that it's a girl sheep. Perhaps it should be Willie Warmer?) "I-will-be-betrayed-murdered-and-eaten Woollypants" (fair do's mon) "B*gger the sheep" (thanks Samara!) "Shaft the sheep" (thanks Samara, there's a theme emerging here) "Stew the sheep" (or for that matter - "Roast" the sheep) "Oi Ewe" (ok, but ... read more

The World doesn’t care about Australia. Australia doesn’t care about Perth. This is great! No one cares what happens out here! Anything goes! - James E. Lynch, Jr. Had my cousin, James the Wise, not been living in Fremantle for the past 5 months, there’s little to no chance that I’d have landed in Western Australia at any point in my life. But then again, I’ve learned that there is a glimmer of method to Jamie's madness, as the trip to WA has been much more than I expected. The entire trip to WA had been rather suspect due to the fact that I couldn’t get in touch with Jamie until just about a week prior to arrival. But as this journey has worked, the unplanned has proved the most fun and the day after arriving ... read more

Had technical and domestic problems with camper van, so arrange to swop it for another one in Cairns, so head back south earlier than planned. Set off from Cairns and continue South, only to experience more van issues! Not going well. How we long for the heady days of YHA'ing across Australia. It seems we are unable to get a refund from the company, so have to stick with the miserable thing. We plough on regardless, but decide some nights in regular accomodation or called for. Camping in faulty vans and monsoons is NOT a good combination! Spend the night in Townsville, capital of North Brisbane, and called into Mission beach for a run en route.... read more
