I arrived yesterday in Auckland, New Zealand at about 12:30 in the afternoon. The flight was very long and tiring. When I arrived in New Zealand it was pretty much the middle of a hurricane. It was ridiculous, trees blowing sideways and rain coming down and drenching everything I own. On top of that I already was able to donate $200 to the NZ government. In the airport I was fined for a little jar of honey. Apparently there are rules based on what can and can’t be brought into the country. I figure most travelers already know this, but for the rest of us we have to learn the hard way. I had packed that with some strawberry jelly in my backpack and forgot it was there. Going through customs to get into the ... read more

Here we have a quick selection of pictures that we liked, as added by my lovely assistant...Miss lozza Tunni Saunders! The old VW camper was parked up on the pavement at Nimbin; stoners capitol of Australia! Painted up in lovely psychadelic, luminous bright colours with the stereotypical symbols for love and peace and generally the forward thinking slogan "get stoned." This rare peice of caner memorobelia marked the entrance to the Hemp Museum...fitting! Still it looked good and added to the general laid back atmosphere. It was a bank holiday on the day we visited Nimbin, so there were hardly any residents around to ask about their 'crazy' lifestyles! We even missed the weird odd almost naked man who sits on the side of the road and tells your fortune. As described to us by two ... read more

We're now in Coral Bay in the fra North West of Australia staying in a hostel called Ningaloo Reef which is bang on the beach and perfect for launching a snorkelling attack on the nearby waters. I have invested over $120 in snorkelling gear and today we have been snorkelling with Greenback and loggerhead turtles, snorkelling alongside them and watching them dive to the bottom, eat of the seabed and then surface for air - a truly amazing and memorable site. Sorry there are no pictures here of them as I don't have a digital camera that works under water - however we have bought disposable cameras and will get the pictures burnt onto cd where possible to be uploaded soon. We also snorkelled in a nearby breeding area for 2 meter reef sharks non dangerous ... read more

As part of our Round-the-World ticket, we were given a couple of 'free' internal flights within Australia. So we decided to fly to this Big Red Rock in the middle of nowhere. Sometimes known as Ayers Rock, sometimes known as Uluru (oo-la-roo) it really is quite extraordinary. The Rock itself is much bigger than I imagined. Nige has been here before, and we've all seen pictures of it, but it is very very big. Climbing the rock is now frowned upon and the local Aborigines (Anagu) ask you not to do it, although Nige walked up it eleven years ago. Instead we walked around some of the base which was great. Down the road are a group of smaller, but equally impressive group of rocks, The Olgas (Kata Tjuta meaning 'many heads'). In extreme heat, and ... read more

A blog update! Jessie left today to get to Christchurch which was quite sad. I have really enjoyed travelling together and we have had so much fun. We made it to Milford Sound and did an overnight cruise which was great. ON approaching Milford we were in a cloud and groaned at the terrible viewing conditions but as we descended the winding road to the harbour, things cleared up and the weather held out. We were able to appreciate the spectacular scenery and munched our roast lamb dinner out on deck watching Mitre Peak. Words can't describe the surroundings which were unbelievably beautiful. It really was worth the long drive to get there and afterwards we headed to Lake Manapouri and stayed in a great hostel where the owner took us out on his boat for ... read more

Oceania » Australia » New South Wales » Sydney January 25th 2006

Start at the beginning. Got up and did normal stuff. Left the hotel for a day on the hustings. Stickers going out at a good clip in spite of a light rain (almost mist). Wandered the underground arcades. Hit the library to read the paper. Trolled the Queen Victoria Building - central Sydney. Had a chocolate hit on my way to Sydney station where I dreamed of keen republicans. Then the day really started. Got a call from the guy who wanted two flags. He just wanted to say he was still interested. Maybe next week. I said my plans were fluid and might go to Melbourne next week. OK. Then encounter a very aggressive guy -a street person with problems. Then get a call from the girl who writes the inside cover column of the ... read more

18th Jan Well we left Ceduna after a morning of drama trying to update our blog there. So after several hours there instead of 1 we were able to update. The good news however was that due to our late departure from Ceduna we were still in range to hear the news of Sammy being an Autie yet again with Moo moo, a boy without a name, being born to Craig, Lou and Finny. From there we had a short drive to Fowlers Bay where we camped for the night. The beach there is not fantastic for swiming as there is loads of sea weed however there is a nice pier and awsom samd dunes we climed up to enjoy the sunset. 19th Jan Fowlers Bay ended up being a mosquito haven so we decided rather than ... read more

Hello All, We are still chillin' in the capital city and I just added photos to the blog. It is amazing how many pictures one takes that just suck. Well I was able to put together a bunch of interesting shots and think they are even relevant to the entries I attached them to. IF you go to the list entries screen you will see which ones have images. Iworked last Saturday in "Furniture Removal" this is code for lugging furniture and boxes fro one location to another. In the US we may call it Business Relocation. It was okay. I didn't mind the hard work so much, however, the McDonalds for breakfast and Burger King for lunch that was provided by teh employer was alittle but disgusting. Needless to say my tummy is a little ... read more
