This is another local walk that Dan and I did alone as Peter went off celebrating his birthday (again) by playing golf with visiting friends from the West Coast. The walk was around West Lakes and over Delfin Island, a man-made housing development (circa 1975) constructed from the swamps of the Barker inlet. It is an easy walk, about 5.5 km, originally shown to us by Willy, and it would take about 1 1/2 to 2 hours depending on the age of any children accompanying you. Most of the walk is around the lake, however private property means that you need to head into the streets at several places to make the journey. You can find out more about this area and the Port Adelaide waterways here "Urban Ecological Communities 3: The Barker Inlet-Port River Estuary" ... read more

We arrived on the bus at Airlie beach and had to go straight onto the boat for sailing round the Whitsunday Islands. The boat we were on was called the British Defender, 40ft racing yatch that had been round the world a few times. They was 26 people on board including Ti, Landy and Maura who we'd done Fraiser Island with. There was also a guy on there from Chatham who'd lived in Maidstone so it was quite weird when we started reminising about nights at Strawberry Moons. It was so much more relaxing than camping, we got waited on hand and foot by the crew and the food was great, don't think anyone on board had eaten so well for months!! We sailed to Whitsunday Island, which is the biggest in the group and moored ... read more

We arrived in Australia on Monday. We flew into Sydney and then took another flight to Cairns on the North East coast of Australia. This part of Australia is tropical - very hot and humid at the moment. We went on a cablecar from Cairns to a village in the forest and came back on a train. Very pretty trip. From Cairns we took a bus to Mission Beach. We stayed at Mission Beach for two nights. Mission Beach is a very small, quiet place (unlike Cairns which is very busy). We didn't do anything in Mission Beach except a bit of walking and swimming in the pool. At this time of year you cannot swim in the sea here because of the Stinger Jellyfish. Some towns have nets to keep the Stingers away from part ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Cairns January 29th 2006

I can't believe that my trip is nearly half over. Time has really gone by very quickly. I left Airlie Beach and started north to Cairns. I was suppose to spend two nights on Magnetic Island, but I decided to leave a little early. Magnetic Island is just off the coast from Townsville... the city that supposedly gets more sunshine than any other spot in Australia. I worked my magic and surprise.... I brought rain. It absolutely poured rain while I was there, so it wasn't a hard decision to leave early. That night we stayed in Mission Beach. The hostel was really quite nice, but this was a pretty quite place with not a lot happening. I was able to try some kangaroo at their restaurant. Not too bad, but nothing beats Alberta beef! Day: -1 (Jan. 30, 2006) Location: Narrabeen, NSW In 2 days I'll be pushing off. Today, I just had a paddle - out of Narrabeen Lake into the ocean & up the coast a bit. Hardly any wind, little surf. A lot of the 'luminescense' (sp?) in the water - paddle dipping, bow wake, 'torpeoes' of fish trails when spooked by me. Tomorrow I'll turn in my rental car and do a final packing of gear. Though I've done a 'test' packing of the gear at home (in the US), I haven't actually packed the kayak yet (though it is the same gear, and the same (design of) kayak - so it should fit. In the past week I've been testing the boat a bit - some surf and ling the coast. When I leave on ... read more

Oceania » New Zealand » North Island » Raglan January 29th 2006

Figured should start heading back North if we were to return by Tuesday (It's a bank holiday weekend for those of you who think we are slacking; you know who you are!). Took a quick detour via the tourist info to book accomodation after last nights escapades. And headed up Mt Egmont, a serious maontain at 2.5km high, could see snow on top. Views a bit Lord of the Rings like. Drove up North along the "Forgotten World Highway" It was like driving through Jurrasic park, even the bit where they is chased by the T-rex (although that might have been drug induced in this case.) Made it out of the jungle after guzzling half a tank of petrol (fortunatly read the leaflet which said fill up before you go, otherwise would currently be crapping in ... read more

Bula! We are in Fiji. We got here yesterday after a (relatively) short flight from Auckland. When we arrived there was a band playing music and we got strings of beads made from shells. All very tropical. We are staying at the Beach Side Resort, which is nice, and we have our own little bure (cottage). We have been taking it easy as Tim is still recovering and we need a rest before the next leg of our adventure! It is very hot and humid here although it has rained pretty much non-stop! Lets hope it brightens up a bit tomorrow when we start our trip around Vitu Levu (main island).... read more

Yesterday, we spent the morning at a big open-air market in the parking lot right next to our hostel. We met up with Brent, the owner of the organic farm we had contacted about WWOOFing and arranged for him to pick us up Monday to start. So we've officially got our first job in NZ! We also picked up some really nice organic fruits and veges while wandering around the market. We spent the afternoon wandering around a bit and then sat and read at Queens Gardens for a while. Then we stayed in for the evening and watched 'The Piano', for its Kiwi pioneer theme. After dinner and some NZ white wine we headed back to the room. No one else had moved in so we took advantage of having it all to ourselves and ... read more

Oceania » New Zealand » South Island » Christchurch January 29th 2006

We arrived in New Zealand at Christchurch, known as 'the Garden City'. It is quite a small city but picturesque. It has punting boats and trams giving it an old fashioned feel. After a couple of days in Christchurch we picked up a campervan so we could drive around the South Island. The van was very small but we soon came to call it 'home'. First stop in the van was Oamaru where we went to see the Blue penguins we had heard about. Before seeing the smallest penguins in the world we stopped off to see the world's rarest penguin, the Yellow-Eyed penguin. We only got to see them from afar, as they wandered onto the beach we watched them from the clifftop above. The Blue penguins we got to see much closer up. We ... read more
