It was a foggy day as we left the mainland of Te Anau and headed into the mist on the water by boat to the glow worm caves. The caves were surrounded by mossy trees and the walls of the cave were wet like they had been the walls of a steamy shower. We climbed into a small row boat and rowed into the darkness in the cave. As we winded through the stone passageway by boat the ceiling of the cave was covered by what looked like twinkling lights. In reality, those twinkles were actually worms hanging from the ceiling. They were beautiful.... read more

Having watched the debacle that was England v France (why play Flood and Wilkinson together?) the next day saw us rise late and take it easy until the evening then it was off to Eden Park again for the All Blacks versus the Pumas. What should have been a relatively simple match turned out to be a bit of a struggle for the kiwis as Argentina put up a reasonable fight as can be attested to by the mad Argentinan fan in front of us who despite continually jumping up and down like a demented frog and praying was ultimately to be dissapointed. Very much looking forward to the kiwi /wallaby semi next Sunday. Monday morning saw us up at 6 am as we had an early flight to Dunedin. Everything went smoothly and we arrived ... read more

Where was I? oh yes, waiting for the bus... We'd checked earlier with the information desk that our bus left from out the railway station with a somewhat distracted young lady. The coach was due to leave at @13:55 so when, at 13:50, there was still no sign we went back inside to double check. "oh" said the lady, "that coach doesn't leave from here, it goes from the depot 10 minutes from here" PANIC!!!! Having ascertained which direction the coach depot was we raced outside to try and find it but to no avail. We then saw a window cleaner so we ran up to him and asked him if he knew the way. Now I'm not taking the micky or making light of the situation but the one person who you don't want to ... read more

(In an expensive internet cafe so have decided to do a quick summary!) Timaru Drove here from Akaroa - quite a small town, found a great free campervan park for overnight with views over the sea. It was a Bank Holiday though so felt a bit like a ghost town! Oamaru Famous for its penguins! So we saw a night time viewing of the Little Blue penguins coming ashore for the night - they're only about 30cm high, very cute! Took a walk in the hills (nearly died on one very steep bit!), and parked up in a holiday park for a nice warm shower! Dunedin Continued down the coast to Dunedin, via the Moeraki Boulders (big boulders on the beach, up to 4m wide, perfectly circular). After entering Dunedin we went drove along a very ... read more

We had two full days to explore the region, with our primary destination being Milford Sound (the northern most fiord of Fiordland National Park). Sunday was forecast to have better weather, so we put off our drive to the Sound and boat ride until then. We went down to Te Anau and checked out the visitor center for the park and watched a short film on the area. We then drove down the shoreline of Lake Te Anau and took a couple hour walk along the shoreline before the trail meandered deeper into the forest. The damp trail went through forests typical of this region with the trees covered in moss. The main difference was the ferns were a ground bush as opposed to the tree ferns that are common further north and on the North ... read more

The following morning we decided to stay for a second night and get some washing done and have a break from driving as we had gone from coast to coast in one day again!! We went into Te Anau for a wander around the small town and the lake but didn’t really stay for long other than to pick up a few essentials a birthday present for Matthew and also ended up with 2 new fleeces for us!! We headed into the local I site and picked up some info on the walks and the drive along Milford Sound. It is meant to be one of the most scenic drives in New Zealand and we were planning on spending a few days taking our time and stopping at the DOC (department of conservation) campsites along the ... read more

Sunday 20th – Queenstown again Slow day today after so many early mornings and busy days on the Milford Track. Did a circular walk about town and then went up on the Gondala to the hill above Queenstown. Went on the Luge runs which were great fun even though Julia was less than gung-ho! We discussed the fact that we needed to go on a diet when we return to the UK which put Peter into such a panic he had to go and have the largest burger we have ever seen for lunch – see the pictures. After that we needed our afternoon nap. Monday 21st – Te Anau Drove across to Te Anau in the rain but that cleared up and the sun came out for a walk along the edge of the lake, ... read more

The New Zealand adventure continues with some tramping, cruising, and sea kayaking. Before leaving Queenstown though I did some hiking and, of course I had to go bungy jumping! I chose the 134 m (440ft) Nevis jump (the highest). I had gone once before off a short one in Orlando. It was the same exciting/sick feeling standing on the edge ready to jump. This time, there was a lot more free fall so way more exciting. It was over quick, but the buzz lasted for quite awhile. Next stop Te Anau to prepare for hiking the Kepler Track. I had planned the trip to get into Te Anau a couple of days early, 1) to drive up to the Milford Sound and do some hiking and 2) watch the Superbowl. I was really hoping that the ... read more

Hi, It's my turn again, look out for spellings, past and present tense and grammar. The next leg of our journey was taking us to Te Anau as this is approx half way between Queenstown and Milford Sound. I had read in the travel books that the quietest and most peaceful time to be on the Sound was very early in the morning or late in the afternoon, thus missing all the coaches that arrive around lunch time.So early morning it is then, hence the stop at Te Anau. Two hours after leaving Queenstown we arrive at the beautiful and peaceful Lake Te Anau. Lake Te Anau is New Zealand's second largest lake after Taupo, it is 53 km long and 10km across at it's widest part. Having arrived at Te Anau we went straight to ... read more
