Carolyns blog again Was just checking back through the blogs and realised that the last three didnt publish so hopefully they are all up there now. We are in Te anau and will be leaving this morning to head to Dunedin, Christchurch tomorrow and then back to Lock on thursday via Sydney and Adelaide. Yesterday we went to Milford Sound which was magnificent. The weather was beautiful and it has been for the last 4 days. The drive down was a bit hairy, just over 2 hours for 120 kms. Snow on the edges of the road and on the way back a bus broke down in a 31/2 km tunnel through a mountain and we were stuck in the tunnel for a while. Was probably only 15 minutes but seemed a lot longer with water ... read more

Hello again - staying in a hostel with free internet but no usb ports so you'll have to wait for pics Because Queenstown airport is so tiny, within about 2 minutes I was off the plane, had met up with Andrew, and was waiting for the luggage to come through (which took about 15 minutes). Then it was straight in the car and down to Te Anau, stopping for lunch at Athel (a "village" with about 5 farms, a cafe and a "world famous" fishing shop). On arrival in Te Anau it turned out to not be quite as Matesha made out (what with there being a "death rota" where volunteers sign onto rota to drive the dead - in the back seat of their cars - the 2 hours down to the morgue at Invercargill), ... read more

When you feel like you're flying high and appear to be suffering from excessive happiness, forces of nature seem to have a way of intervening to get you grounded. You get snowed-in, bogged and hit by a freakin' bus, that's what happens. In our case anyway... My dream of a good holiday has materialized. I was floating in high spirits, intoxicated with the sheer beauty of the new country I was in. It was the start of spring. Nature is regenerating - the trees have just sprouted new shoots and grass is greener than ever. We are on the road to Milford Sound, one of the most beautiful places in New Zealand and on earth. I’ve read and been told that the stretch from the town of Te Anau to Milford is the most scenic road ... read more

During the journey from Queenstown to Te Anau today, which featured about half an hours worth of dull and flat terrain, Rachel and I decided to play a game, which I thought i would share with you! We thought of all the places that we have visited on our journey so far and labelled them with the first word that came into our mind. I've put a list below, feel free to add a comment with a place and the word that springs to mind if you have been to any of these! Toronto - Rachel: Food Stuart: Yummy New York - Rachel: Busy Stuart: Congested Washington - Both said Politics Las Vegas - Rachel: Disappointing Stuart: OTT Zion National Park- Rachel: Beautiful Stuart: Rocky Grand Canyon - Rachel: Huge Stuart: Awesome New Mexico - Both ... read more

What is it with the death-defying roads around here!?? It would be better if I had a fast car or motorcycle and was driving on my side of road. Once you get use to tuning out the spectacular views while gearing down for the next '25 km' hairpin turn beside a deep gorge, it becomes a fun drive. I drove to Te Anau, a town on edge of fiordland. I decided I didn't have time to take the Milford Sound boat in the fiord but I did want to see some of this famous national park. ... read more

Helloski! Once again it's been a while since updating (sorry!) but we've been busy busy extreme-sporting bees! From Christchurch we went to Lake Tekapo (giggle) where we saw our first bit of snow in this hemisphere (and year) and went on the snow-tubing, a bit like sledging but just on large rubber inner-tubes. That was good fun - surely after that no-one needs to bother with that skiing rubbish! We then headed to the Mount Cook national park (named after - rather than by - the Oz-discoverer) and stayed a night just outside the village in Glentanner (which seemed to consist solely of a caravan park and a helicopter pad, although there were a fair few sheep and cows about too). We went on a 3 hour walk around the national park the next day, we ... read more

Well, what a not very interesting couple of months it's been.... So when I was in England saying "I'll look for a job, I'm not looking for a career so I don't care if I just clean toilets...." I never expected to clean quite so many of them. It's damn near all I've done since December! So what's been going on over here? Well after everyone did their final shifts over the weekend we had the party to end all parties (one guy was still hungover 2 days later) before finally leaving en masse on Monday to new adventures and currently myself and 2 of the Chefs are cruising together, which works out very well for me as one of them has a car. So on Monday we headed down to Queenstown to catch up with ... read more

Gentle Readers, This really is the last of the blogs, and it's not even being written by me. See below, it's self explanatory. To all of you, many thanks for your support, encouragment and kind words over the past few months. I have had a wonderful break, but now it's time to catch up with family and friends before returning to work. For the record, the Beast of Burden and I finished up covering 5,551 kilometres. The top speed of 68.4 kph achieved on the West Coast was never exceeded. The one and only puncture occurred in the central North Island. The bike has the same set of tyres we set out with. regards to you all, Feral Mike Hi, I'm Jack, Uncle Mike's half British half New Zealand nephew and I'm going to tell you ... read more

Rond 1uur in Te Anau. Ergens ... read more

...is that when the fuel gauge of a rental car says "Distance to empty: 0km". there's actually a good 10km left in it. Almost running out of fuel on Takaka Hill was just one of my many adventures this week. Things got a bit wacky for sure, what with the fuel issue in Takaka, a man showing me his underpants in Collingwood (and I didn't ask), the world's worst waitress in Westport, a beared lady in Greymouth and having to rescued by a nice man in Wanaka, having some down Mt Iron the wrong way. Phew! It's been a while since I blogged but things have been moving. We had a very nice couple of days in the Nelson area, staying in possibly the best hostel in NZ (Accents on the Park). Definitely up there with ... read more
