My lie in didn’t occur with the other three people in my dorm in, out and packing since 6am. I get up and after a walk round the town side of the lake, I decide to treat myself to breakfast in one of the café’s – I a very yummy omelette. I have to be at the boat ramp and the end of town for 3pm to meet the teachers and help set up the camp for next week, so until that time, I spend several hours researching a bit more into my trip, thinking about different options, but mostly comparing coast of bus passes and working out the best one to get. Caroline and I get to the boat ramp at 3pm and wait for half an hour before the teachers finally arrive – something ... read more

It’s a chilly 40 minute walk from round the lake to the wildlife centre at 7.20am this morning, and in true Kate style I am wearing my flip flops, so quickly loose the feeling in my toes! The view over the lake is stunning however, with the mountains and forest shrouded in mist. I arrive at the wildlife centre where I am helping out with the morning feed for the birds, fish and ducks. I do the ‘walk around’ with two of the staff there, and get to go in the enclosures and see up close some of the native new Zealand bird species, including kaka, kea, kakariki as well as the ducks and fish. After morning feed duties are complete, I have a bit of spare time so I walk further round the lake, to ... read more

Although I am in an 8 bed dorm, since 4am I have heard distinctly more than 8 different alarm clocks going off. There have been beeps, music, talking time ones, I am pretty sure I heard an animal one at one stage! Grey skies meet me this morning, so I reluctantly wear trousers, and as I walk out of the hostel I realise I am dressed head to toe in Fat Face clothing…..including my scarf. The 5 years of working there certainly shaped my wardrobe and come in handy! I wonder round then lake again, and the town (there is a bit more to it than I thought last night but not much), before treating myself to a nice breakfast. I head back via the supermarket to stock up on food for the next two weeks ... read more

The scenery on the flight to Queenstown is just out of this world, flying over the West coast of the North Island and then South Island. Approaching Queenstown we fly inland over the ‘Remarkables’ mountains and the view is just incredible. I had no idea flying into Queenstown would be so pretty, and I had a window seat – lucky, though any nervous flyers wouldn’t have enjoyed it so much, as it looked like we were going to crash into and land in the mountains. With my flight landing at 4.05pm and the last bus to Te Anau (my destination) leaving a 4.45pm I was worried it might be too tight on time, so had two plans organised, one if I missed the bus and one if I didn’t. This was all irrelevant though, when I ... read more

Friday December 28th We have now been away from home for 3 months and whilst we miss our family and friends we don't miss our home, cleaning it, decorating it, shopping, cooking, paying the bills for it! We stayed in Te Anau last night and went to the cafe for breakfast. After a walk around the town we met at the I-site office where we picked up info on a walk. We drove to where Rob could fish and we went for a walk on the Keppler Trail. After walking across a swing bridge the walk went through what appeared to be a fairy glade. Uphill at first but soon we were meandering through forests of ferns and trees that overlooked the Waipitu river. It was a glorious walk but after about 30 minutes Steve's ankle ... read more

I had planned to go to Stewart Island today but weather was wet and windy so I would not have been able to make the most of it. As in the south of the South Island decided to go to most southerly point as I had been to the most northerly point on the North Island. What a contrast! I had to put o my waterproofs as there was horizontal sleet. It was cold enough for me to be wearing gloves. Staying at Te Anau tonight it rained the whole journey but lovely sunshine here. It is very commercial with lots of boat trips and scenic flights. I walked for a couple of hours after I had a bite to eat. The lake is beautiful. I was in two minds as to whether to drive to ... read more

Yesterday we cruised on Milford Sound and had a fantastic day, rounded off with a great scenic drive back to Te Anau in our "Go Milford" bus. Even as we drove into the Top 10 Holiday Park the weather was starting to take a turn for the worst and looking distinctly gloomy. We have had a good run, 11 sunny days straight since on the road. It is now Sunday 29th April. We are huddled in Crowded House deciding what to do for the day. Last night after getting back from our day of beautiful autumn weather we heard on the radio and saw the TV weather that there was a storm coming thru the central Alps area and that's where we were supposed to be going next. Even got an email from a bloke we ... read more
