We drove back into Te Anau and went to the Lakeside Campsite ( $15pp/pn), the cheapest one here. Got the tent upasap as it was raining and walked into town. WE stopped in the I centre to book our Ferry from Picton to Wellington ( not cheap, 2p + car $220 ! ) and our swim with the dolphins in Kaikoura. Then we walked through town, had a nosy around the shops, bought a new tea-towel, yeh, and then came back for lunch. we settled down in front of the TV as it was still raining...what else to do on a day like today! A few films were on, got out sleeping bags out and settled in! Spent the rest of the afternoon and evening watching films! ... read more

Feb 13th Walked around shores of Lake at Frankton, near to Queenstown. Drove to Te Anau and stayed in Barnyard Backpackers which had log cabins with beautiful view over valley. Went for a run on the Kepler track which started a few ks drive away. Perfect for running with very springy terrain and nice and cool on the shade for the woods. Feb 14th Got up at 6am to drive to Milford for Kayaking- had to scrape frost off car windscreen! After safety briefings and donning of various bizarre kayaking garments we started Kayaking just before 10. We had the best possible weather - blue sky and bright sunshine. It was still pretty cold in the shade- we saw lots of seals and a fiordland penguin in the water. A really great place for kayaking. We ... read more

Woke up overlooking Lake Hayes just outside Arrowtown - stunning scenery (again).... Headed into Arrowtown - which is a really beautiful old town - very similar to a scene in an old-western... single story wooden buildings down each side of a short high street. It was originally built and developed during a period of gold-panning, but is now very much a tourist destination with its own unique style. Highly recommend a trip to wander and take in the atmostphere. One thing that has struck me in all the time in NZ - is how happy and pleasant the NZ people are. Shop staff, waiters and waitresses, tour guides - and the general public - all seem to have a grin stuck to their face and a welcoming that puts the UK to shame.... No wonder their ... read more

In the morning we wake up to the sound of the Kea birds - noisy bunch. I go into the kitchen for my morning cup of tea and meet a guy who is has been cycling around nz for months (crazy!) and he tells me that his banana has already been stolen by a kea bird (I think these birds are as sneeky as monkeys). Anyway we pack up and load the car after breakfast and head off to Te Anau. Decide to give Milford Sound another look before heading off. Everything is so quite early in the morning, the clouds hang low and the the water is so still making the reflections crystal clear. Milford Sound is truly beautiful, pristine and untouched by man. Love the way its so small despite all the hype about ... read more

TE ANAU / MILFORD SOUND / INVERCARGILL G'Day Guys! Welcome back. Eine englische ... read more

Another belated update! ARGH! As you may have gathered now the South Island often seems completely desolate in comparison to the North, with total lack of reception anywhere other than the 'hub' towns (think Te Anau, Invercargill, Queenstown etc) which are seperated by mass expanses of beautifully empty, dramatic bushland. 1/3 of the entire population of NZ live in the South Island, which is almost twice as big as the North. When you consider that more people live in Auckland than they do in the South Island, you can understand how 'frontierland' this stage of the adventure is! Anyway - time to continue from where I left off and hopefully update without boring you to death, dear readers! We left for the Franz Josef Glacier early in the morning, giving ourselves enough time to have a ... read more

Today we drove from Te Anau to Milford sound. This time I was raining pretty hard and there was water falls every where. It really looks like a different place in the rain. After Chris and Kim went on there tour around the sound we got back in the car and headed to Queenstown. It rained so hard on the way back that I almost had to pull over because the wipers couldn't clear it off fast enough.... read more

Today we left Dunedin and took the southern scenic route to Invercargill. It was a nice drive until 60km outside of Invercargill and then it was straight flat roads and I could have slept until we got into town. There isn’t much to do in Invercargill so we went to Bluff which is the southern most point on the south Island so that I could say I have been to the top and bottom of Both islands. There is also Stewart Island but the ferry there cost $120 and I just don’t care to pay that much just to see another Island. After Bluff we headed back to Te Anau to stay the night so we could go to Milford sound in the Morning. Chris and Kim booked a trip to see the glow worms across ... read more

J’ai ... read more
